Battlecruisers in Dystopian Wars

This is going to be a bit of a tangent for me; in this post, I’m actually going to submit a few custom ship designs for consideration. You see, after the last installment in my Dystopian Wars Vs. Real Life series, I realized that there was no good in-game analog to the battlecruiser type. Naturally, this started me thinking about what a Dystopian Wars (DW) battlecruiser might look like. As a result, I’ve come up with a design proposal for discussion:

Now, on to a discussion of how I came up with it!

Battle of Midway Lecture

So, as I mentioned  a while back when I posted a War at Sea battle report that re-created the battle of Midway, this year marks the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Midway. I recently discovered an excellent lecture by historian Jonathan Parshall, the author of one of my favorite books, “Shattered Sword: The Untold Story of the Battle of Midway.” The video is a bit long (50 minutes), but it is well worth a view as he lays out the events that lead up to the battle and dispels some of the misconceptions in the popular mythos that surrounds it:

Until next time, good luck and good hunting!

Firestorm Armada Hardback Edition Review

Firestorm Armada Hardback Edition Review

After several years of additional models and downloadable rules tweaks, Firestorm Armada is back, in the form of a handsome hard-bound edition of its rules. For those of you that don’t know, Firestorm Armada is a fleet-scale space combat game from Spartan Games, and it uses the core movement and shooting mechanics from that company’s other two naval games, Uncharted Seas and Dystopian Wars. The following is not going to be a review of the game per se; for that, I heartily recommend Episdoe 46 of the D6 Generation podcast (most of the review largely applies, even with the changes in this edition). Rather, I am going to focus in on the changes between this version of the rules and the first one, as well as my overall impressions on the quality of the book. So, be warned that much of the discussion that follows assumes you have some understanding of how the game works ;).

Dystopian Wars vs. Real Life Pt. 4: Cruisers

Dystopian Wars vs. Real Life Pt. 4: Cruisers

Having looked at the “big boys” (battleships and dreadnoughts) in parts 1 and 2 of this series, and at the “small guys” (destroyers) in the third, I am now turning my attention to the middle for a discussion on cruisers in Dystopian Wars and how they match up with their historical counterparts. In a way, this will be a much more difficult topic to tackle than the first three, as the definition of what a cruiser is and what it is supposed to do has never been very fixed, and there have been many variants and sub-types that defy easy classification. However, I’m going to give it my best shot, using the same methodolgy I used last time; I’ll start with a brief discussion of the history of the real type, followed by an overview of the Dystopian Wars classes, and finally I’ll compare and contrast the two.

War At Sea Battle Report: Midway

Foreward

This year marks the 70th anniversary of a number of pivotal battles from the Pacific War, the foremost among them being the Battle of Midway. To be honest, I had intended to write an article about this battle last month, but time got away from me! By way of apology, here is an excellent battle report from a War at Sea re-creation of the battle that was written by fellow Foruminian Shinnentai (re-posted here with his permission). Be sure to check out the many excellent custom paint jobs as  you read the report! Now, I’ll turn it over to Shin:

Introduction

Hi all, here’s another report of me playing as the Japanese against my brother playing as the Americans – this time the Battle of Midway.

I kept the setup fairly simple, although after reading Shattered Sword I was tempted to have the US carriers hold 4 squadrons each, but work in a special rule for Hornet and Enterprise’s squadrons to have a chance of arriving at their targets in waves rather than together – perhaps once I get more US planes! In the event the only special rule I used was that in turn 1 the Japanese had to fly off an air attack on Midway, but not allow them to fly off any further attack aircraft.

Forces involved (Midway squadrons were somewhat bodged together, and most unpainted to boot! Also note the Hiryu’s temporary base ^^) :

Hurricane Season Unboxing/Impressions

Hurricane Season Unboxing/Impressions

Thanks to Neal over at The War Store, I managed to get my hands on a copy of Hurricane Season, the new campaign supplement for Dystopian Wars. Along with this shiny new book comes several new naval models that allow players to ferry land units ashore; having made do with some home made landing craft before, I couldn’t resist picking up these “official” ones now that they are available.

State of the Game: War At Sea

This post marks the first of its type here at Man Battlestations: A overview of a game and its current status with respect to company support, fan base, and future outlook. As such, these articles might need to be revisited from time to time, as they will undoubtedly be made somewhat obsolete by official announcements and other developments! The first game I’ve chosen for this treatment is the Axis & Allies Naval Miniatures game, more commonly known as War at Sea. While the concept for this topic has been floating around in my head for a while, some recent posts over at the Forumini have inspired me to push ahead and write the first one. Read on to see my thoughts on the future of War At Sea!

The Battle Standard Tournament Report

The Battle Standard Tournament Report

Hello again! Yesterday, I had the opportunity to participate in a Dystopian Wars tournament that was held at The Battle Standard, a store about an hour away from where I am living in Groton, CT. This was the latest in a series of such events that have been held at the store, and I had a great time!

The event included about 10 players, consisted of 3 rounds, and lasted from about 10 am to 5 pm. All of the games were fought with 500 point fleets assembled from the starter box for each faction. Interestingly, all of the factions released so far were represented at the event; there were even two French players, including myself! Read on for a summary of how my three games went!

In Harm’s Way

Hi everyone! I’m back with another War At Sea battle report. Last Wednesday Seth and I met up to for another game, but this time we decided to try something different. Instead of the 200 point battles we have been playing, we decided to go with a scenario called “In Harm’s Way,” which is based off of the historical Battle of Sunda Strait.

The original version of the scenario was posted on the Wizards of the Coast website way back when the game was first released in 2007. Given the limited number of ships available in the game at the time, this first draft had to incorporate many proxies (The USS Baltimore had to stand in for the USS Houston, for example). However, the game is now on its 6th set, and many of the units involved in the battle are now available, or else there are more appropriate proxies available. So, a while back, Seth took it upon himself to revise the scenario to incorporate these units. It is this version, which can be found on the Forumini, that we played Wednesday. Read on to see how it turned out!

Dystopian Wars vs. Real Life, Pt 3: Destroyers

Dystopian Wars vs. Real Life, Pt 3: Destroyers

Welcome to the third installment of my series that examines how the steampunk universe of Dystopian Wars compares to real-world naval history! The first two installments discussed naval technology in general, and also focused on the big boys; the battleships and dreadnoughts.  After I posted those first two posts, I got some valuable feedback regarding the length and focus of their content. So, hopefully I’ve addressed those concerns this time around!

For this post, I’m going to go to the opposite end of the scale and talk about destroyers. First, I’m going to discuss the origins, technical evolution, and history of the destroyer type from its origins to the present day. Next, I will briefly discuss the qualities of the various DW destroyer classes, and see how they fit into their faction and the game as a whole. Finally, I will compare the DW destroyers to their real-life counterparts. Continue reading
