Fatal Choices Kickstarter

Hey all! I just wanted to point your attention towards a Kickstarter that is running right now, created by a good friend of mine named Seth Owen (who posts on the MBS forms as wargamer55). He has created a self-contained game and campaign that re-fights the Cornel and Falklands engagements between the British and German navies in 1914. These two engagements were among the earliest skirmishes between these two rival fleets, and Seth’s project looks like it will be a great way to explore this chapter of the Great War. Check it out!

Dystopian Wars 2.0 Rules Breakdown Part 3: Section C

And now, the third installment of my detailed look at the new edition of Dystopian Wars! This time, I will be tackling Section C, which is a pretty big chunk of the rules. Essentially, Section C covers the major portions of the Activation Phase, giving each individual portion its own detailed overview (and the segments are covered in the same order that they are performed in, no less!).  These sub-sections include the Command Segment, movement Segment, Line of Sight, Firing Segment, Boarding Segment, and also the End Phase.

Dystopian Wars 2.0 Rules Breakdown Part 2: Section B

Dystopian Wars 2.0 Rules Breakdown Part 2: Section B

Time for the second installment in my detailed review of the second edition of Dystopian Wars! This post will be fairly short, as Section B only has 5 pages in it (the shortest section by far!). Just like Section A, Section B is broken down into several sub-sections, incluiding Order of Play, Attacks & Damage, and Disorder.

Dystopian Wars 2.0 Rules Breakdown Part 1: Section A

Dystopian Wars 2.0 Rules Breakdown Part 1: Section A

Welcome to the second installment of Dystopian Wars 2.o coverage here on the MBS blog! This time, I’m going to be digging in to the rules proper, so this will be a bit more technical than the first impressions post I made last time. I’m going to be focusing on the differences between the two editions. As I mentioned in that first post, the new rules are broken up into sections. Sections A, B, and C have the actual rules needed to play the game, and are all that is included in the “Admiral” version of the rulebook. This post will be focusing on that first section.

2014 Painting Contest Winners

After 2 rounds of voting, the winners for this year’s Man Battlestations painting contest have been determined!

First place goes to Danaussie with his beautifully painted 1:1800 scale HMS Renown:

In second place was Last Rites’s New Orleans Class airship from Dystopian Wars:

Rounding out third place was Andrewchristlieb’s Directorate fleet for Firestorm Armada, featuring some beautiful free-hand markings:

Honorable mention goes to Grgbobe’s “what-if” Japanese battleship squadron, featuring designs that were canceled due to the arms limitation treaties of the 20’s and 30’s:

Overall, this was another very successful contest! We had 14 entries this year, two more than in 2013. All entries were very well done, and represent a lot of hard work and talent. You can check all of them out in the gallery below:

2014 DWVA X-Cam Update

2014 DWVA X-Cam Update

Hey all! It has been a while.

So, today I’ve got an update on the last couple of weeks worth of action on the DW X-Cam. The campaign is off to a heck of a start, with a number of battles being fought. It is starting to look like Sundays at the Game Vault in Fredericksburg is going to be a regular meeting time and place for the group going forward. Anyway, here are some shots of the action:

Ghenghis Con 2014

Landlubber here! Spent Friday and Saturday this past weekend at Genghis Con 2014, a local gaming convention put on by the good folks at the Denver Gamers Association.  The con was here in Denver (actually Aurora, a suburb), at the Red Lion Hotel.

This was the first con I’ve been to where you pay to register, and then buy a ticket for each gaming event in which you want to play.  Pre-registration was $24, I think, and each event was $3-$4.  Kinda strange to me–I’m used to paying the registration fee and then signing up for games.  But, it was no big deal.

As far as the games offered, this con is very heavy on RPGs.  Never really got into those myself, but at least half the games offered were RPGs.  After that, it was board games, and then miniatures games.

I signed up for Space Hulk, an X-Wing tournament, a 20mm land-based Cold War armor engagement, and a home-brewed 25mm naval game.  The armor game ended up getting canceled at the last minute, so I took my refund and registered for a 1/600 scale American Civil War naval scenario.

This was my first time playing Space Hulk, and I really enjoyed it!
