That's an interesting article.  I like the comparison of the Starfleet Enterprise with sailing ships.  For Starfleet to adopt that kind of mindset makes a lot of sense given that the environment a sailing vessel in the 1700's had to deal with isn't conceptually that different than what a starship has to deal with, unknown territory and adversaries, long-duration solo operations, and the need for self-sufficiency.

Just now catching up on this thread. Great article. Funny that it was in FP. But I liked how the interviewee took the questions in stride and gave honest, sensible answers.
