Historical Naval Games / Op Berlin 1941 - Game 4, Rendezvous
« on: July 10, 2018, 03:34:29 pm »

Dear Fellow Naval Gamer,

Here we have the 4th episode of our 2018 Naval Campaign for your perusal.

More of a straight up fight this time after the mind games of the previous three games, Scharnhorst and Gneisenau have fallen on a Convoy of Transports just as the escorts are in a change over rendezvous, twice as many escorts and a roving Battlegroup including a small carrier. Things get interesting.

Lots of pictures and full set up notes and AAR on the blog post.

I don't have any exact figures but the Rodney stopped to pick up survivors so it look like there was some.

Game 3 is up and it's a bit different,  a true story of the brave Chilean Reefer merchant who took on two German Battlecruisers.

As always full details to play along.

Historical Naval Games / Re: Project Jutland - Live at Derby
« on: October 26, 2017, 05:54:48 pm »
Cheers Guys,

As for other rules the answer is no, we have been settled on the same rules for WW2 for 25 plus years (the WW1 are just a extention of those) they work for us and if it ain't broke etc.

I think most will find them on the complicated side, but after so long playing them they are second nature to us. One day soon I will post them.

Historical Naval Games / Project Jutland - Live at Derby
« on: October 22, 2017, 03:25:13 pm »

https://yarkshiregamer.blogspot.co.uk/2017/10/project-jutland-live-at-derby.html

Evening fellow Navallers,

The giant behemoth that is Jutland rolled out of the stocks into the show that is the Derby Worlds a couple of weeks ago.

I have done a full report on the game, it's set up and how we got on, liberally sprinkled with lots of pics of course  !

A great couple of days with a monster of a game. For you full on Naval geeks I have listed the damage to each of the ships involved. I have put it at the end so "normal" people can stop reading before hand.

Hopefully Project Jutland will see the light of day again, no plans as yet but I'm open to offers (mostly pie and beers based offers that is).

So here it is, the final update of our Baltic Naval Campaign,

Game 4 ramps things up with the arrival of some big guns, as well as most of the Luftwaffe !

You need a spot of luck with the Soviet fleet, having bad luck is not better than having no luck at all.

This has been a really enjoyable foray into a Campaign and theatre of operations that prior to the Campaign I knew little about. Hope those who have followed along have enjoyed as well.

Here we go again,

Game 3 is here, after a couple of smaller games we have 70 ships and nearly 200 aircraft fighting this one out.

An interesting fight with a steadily building Soviet force trying to out run, German Ships, German and Finnish Aircraft, Shore Batteries, Mines and their own exploding ships.

As Russian Commander in this game you have to be prepared for losses, however can you lose just enough to still win ?

As always I have included full set up instructions, maps and orbats if you fancy a go at the battle, along with links to the previous combats.

Thanks for any interest.

Cheers everyone,

I started using the linked scenario method for Campaigns a few years back after getting bogged down in games in the past where people have lost interest after their 97th carefully plotted search pattern failed to locate the enemy.

This way each game is more or less self contained but the result of the previous battle effects the start point of the next game. So in the Baltic games the Germans have the technical edge however they are very short on numbers whilst the Russians in comparison have large numbers of Destroyers in the pot, the loss of the Maxim Gorky could prove very difficult for them, but you can't predict how tabletop Commanders will act !

Game 3 is already in motion, reports soon.

Welcome back Naval Gamers,

Part 2 of our Baltic Naval Campaign is up on t'blog for those of you with a nautical disposition to enjoy. Read our adventures on the high seas or why not join in, all the scenario details are there.

As you might be able to tell from the photo, things didn't go to well for the Russians.

Why do Commanders always close the range ?

We had an enjoyable game and part 3 of the Campaign our go at the Tallinn Convoys is already on the table.

Not a period I am familiar with either, however anything by Langton is top drawer regardless of price. It's not a fleet action period so not needing hundreds of ships I'd spend the extra dinar on quality.

Hi,

GHQ stuff is great however there are lots of factors to consider when choosing

How much do you want to spend ?
How big an area do I have to game in  ?
What size games do I want ?

My WW2 Collections are all in 1/3000 scale, these are 1/2400 and specifically for a friend and for a very specific game. Having done WW1 in 1/2400 and having massive WW2 Collections I can't see me doing more of these unless they are for others.

Another US company  C in C make WW2 stuff in this scale, not sure of any others as it's not my field.

http://yarkshiregamer.blogspot.co.uk/2017/02/12400-tirpitz-and-friends.html

A rare foray into 1/2400 WW2 Naval for me today, having huge 1/3000 collections for the period the need and of course cost of starting a fresh in a larger scale is out of the question.

It was nice then to put these together for a friend for a display game for Tirpitz and her final action.

GHQ of course with a nice addition to my WW1 collection included on the blog post.
