Title: Star Wars first pass
Post by: Kelly on February 12, 2021, 04:36:21 pm
As a New Year's resolution I wanted to finally start working through all of my unpainted ships, and here is the first pass on the first group.
(https://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2021/2/12/1095618_sm-25k%2C%20Clone%20Wars%2C%20Star%20Wars%2C%20Venator.JPG) (https://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/1095618-25k%2C%20Clone%20Wars%2C%20Star%20Wars%2C%20Venator.html)

These are 1:25000 scale Venators that are slightly under two inches.

These are right under an inch and a half.

Thank you, I haven't come anywhere close to figuring how I will actually use these, but I hope to have a good variety painted up for at least displaying on a shelf.

Nice!  I wonder what system you are going to use these in?

I was just thinking the same thing!

However, A Call To Arms may also have an appropriate list available as well.  I am also sure the venerable Full Thrust can handle these ships as well.

Here are some auxiliary ships, Hardcell Transports from Episode 2.
(https://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2021/3/8/1098362_sm-25k%2C%20Clone%20Wars%2C%20Hardcell%2C%20Star%20Wars%2C%20Transport.JPG) (https://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/1098362-25k%2C%20Clone%20Wars%2C%20Hardcell%2C%20Star%20Wars%2C%20Transport.html)

The Munificent is included for scale; at 1:25000 these come in at around a third of an inch.

Yeah, I just do not recall them at all.

Granted, it has been a long time since I watched the Prequels and the Clone Wars show.

Only about a dozen ships appear in the Clone Wars animated series, but when you also add in the computer games, X-Wing, Empire at War, Battlefront..., there are another dozen or so ships that technically are also Legends-level canon for the period.

Looking at the user modifications being released for Empire at War specifically, they also introduce about 20 more ships or variants into the Clone Wars that were only described in novels, or pictured in comics, but that were never actually modeled for rendering or released under the license.  Those would be tangentially canon at best, but are great inspiration.

All of those numbers are just looking at the ships that measure at least 500 feet, and at 1:25000 scale the silhouettes of anything smaller really break down.

Thank you for the link, he had two ships from the collection that I had not considered yet... back to Wookieepedia for research!

What I did notice is that these are grouped into scale bands, small / medium / large, with consistency within each band but not across the whole range which is why I eventually walked away from Star Wars Armada.  I am trying to true the scale up between each of the ships but realistically length is the only dimension I can keep consistent; height is the dimension I have to exaggerate the most to keep any stability on the stand.

The biggest ship from the Clone Wars so far, here is the only major ship to appear in all three of the prequels...
(https://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2021/5/29/1107206_sm-25k%2C%20Clone%20Wars%2C%20Lucrehulk%2C%20Star%20Wars.JPG) (https://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/1107206-25k%2C%20Clone%20Wars%2C%20Lucrehulk%2C%20Star%20Wars.html)

The Lucrehulk battleship is 5 inches in diameter in 1:25000 scale and its size is one of the main reasons I went with 25K to true up the scales across all of ships on the table.
(https://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2021/5/29/1107208_sm-25k%2C%20Clone%20Wars%2C%20Lucrehulk%2C%20Star%20Wars.JPG) (https://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/1107208-25k%2C%20Clone%20Wars%2C%20Lucrehulk%2C%20Star%20Wars.html)

And the Recusant for scale is right at 2 inches long...
(https://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2021/5/29/1107207_sm-25k%2C%20Clone%20Wars%2C%20Lucrehulk%2C%20Star%20Wars.JPG) (https://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/1107207-25k%2C%20Clone%20Wars%2C%20Lucrehulk%2C%20Star%20Wars.html)

Awesome job! Your work on these continues to impress. It is easy to overlook just how big the Lucrehulk is! I know that for myself, I assumed it was about the size of an ISD for many years after Episode 1. In reality, it's closer to a SSD in size and capability. I hope that one day we'll see an extra-large model of it join the Star Wars Armada range ;).

I am almost out of canon ships from the prequels, and have started putting together tokens to use as fighters, below are Hyena droid bombers...
(https://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2021/6/17/1109044_sm-25k%2C%20Clone%20Wars%2C%20Hyena%2C%20Star%20Wars.JPG) (https://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/1109044-25k%2C%20Clone%20Wars%2C%20Hyena%2C%20Star%20Wars.html)

And Vulture droid fighters...
(https://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2021/6/17/1109045_sm-25k%2C%20Clone%20Wars%2C%20Star%20Wars%2C%20Vulture.JPG) (https://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/1109045-25k%2C%20Clone%20Wars%2C%20Star%20Wars%2C%20Vulture.html)

I kept the size of the tokens at an inch to keep them from taking up too much table space, and the rim allows them to be stacked.  I may have stolen that idea from Upwords...

...along with some Umbaran fighters.  These were right at the vertical limit of what will fit into these nesting tokens without switching scale, so the other canon small craft like the V-19 are out, and that should do it for everything small on my project.

This is only a two piece print, but with the overall ship being over seven inches long, the front and back sections were both over 4 inches long including the interior connecting locks.  Each was well past the eight hour mark on printing even with lowering the resolution, and with the age on my printer I was crossing my fingers on these working, but they both turned out fine on the first attempt.

The next terror I experienced was during painting; I had put hollow sections throughout the model to help with adhesion, keep the weight down, and save resin, but after cleaning and assembly I found out that makes it incredibly unbalanced.  Trying to keep a grip on the model while painting was very difficult, and I had to go back and correct paint slips more than any other ship so far.

I have not even begun to think about a permanent base solution for it so far.  Overall, as a terror weapon designed to intimidate everyone, the Subjugator is an absolute success... I am afraid to put it on the table.

I can see how the off-balance nature of the mini would make it hard to paint. Your efforts paid off, though! Your line work on these is incredible.

Impressive looking beast - And I agree, the painting here is top notch!

Thanks for the compliments, but I cannot take credit for painting any panel lines.  All of those are recesses of a half mm each that I put in to catch ink lines, and even then I had to go over the edges repeatedly again for clean up.  Also, the windows are not recessed, but raised a quarter mm to make them easier to pick out with a brush.

Painting reliefs is much easier than freehand, and if I have any chance to put paint shortcuts in at the modeling phase I take it.
