News and Rumors / Updated Spartan Downloads

FYI, looks like Spartan posted updated Zenian, Kurak and Black Wolf stats earlier this month.  Maybe I was the only one who missed it?

DWCO / Shadow Hunter Session
« on: January 21, 2015, 11:59:56 pm »
Greg and I met this evening to knock out a few Shadow Hunter scenarios.  Greg represented the FSA well, scoring two scenario victories to my one Blazing Sun.  A few highlights and observations:
- The scenarios went quick.  Was fun to complete two and almost finish a third in about 3 hours.
- Blazing Sun Frigates got a Sturginium Flare crit on one of his Georgetown cruisers, 13" movement.  We we're a little lost as to what impact this would have on his activation and if/how he would be able to get them back onto coherence.  Quick rulebook search did not provide clarity, so something for us to look at.
- Greg forgot his rocket battery on at least one activation of his Liberty Battleship.
- Apparently my crew forgot to load the incendiary rounds into my primaries and rockets, as that little rule was completely forgotten about.
- Greg made really good use of his Kinetic Generator on his Battleship.  The new rules that provide D6" of movement compared to the D3" in the previous version (if I remember correctly) can make for a FAST Battleship.
- Greg also had some great die rolls on his Battleships sustained fire MAR.
- Blazing Sun corvettes are FAST and have a nice gun.  I like that over many other factions better boarding corvettes that have no offensive firepower to speak of.
- The Kaiju Heavy Battleship is pretty cool.  I LOVE the little twin rotary rocket launcher turrets mounted on each of the main gun turrets (kind of a Mickey Mouse head & ears arrangement).  I managed to get to RB 1 on some of Greg's frigates and still had two shots of 9AD each, even though she had six points of damage.  With a DR of 6 however, it seemed to take damage pretty easy.  The CR of 12 helped mitigate of few of Greg's good rolls bit though.  I would recommend upgrading to a shield generator (this scenarios did not give me the option).  I couldn't get close enough to use the sonic or disruption generators.

Anything to add Greg?

The Swap Shop / Marks Miniature Smorgasborg and Bazaar

Ok folks, I finally got around to organizing and cleaning out the minis.  Almost all of them are wet or space navy vessels, with a few less than naval-capable units brought in on naval transports (like how I justified that)?  Please take a look and see what all may be of interest to you.  I have not listed any prices, so PM me and make me a reasonable offer and we can play "Used Car Dealership".  For factions/races with multiple offerings, I will break them up but do prefer to sell them as sets if I'm able (particularly the Firestorm as they are mostly full squadrons, the Abbai, Kzinti, WYN, Full Thrust, Battlefleet Gothic, Aerotech and Starblazers).  I can provide pictures for any of them you'd like to see.  Give your holiday cash a new (foster) home (my pocket) which will then most likely find a more permanent home in the pockets of Spartan games, completing the circle of life (and eventually providing us more fodder to chat about on here).  For those items that don't find new homes, I'll be posting them on eBay in a few weeks.

35+/- years of collecting (hoarding?) minis and I've only painted 3 D&D figs (about 34 years ago) and primed a few Brakiri (this year).  Today will go down in an annals of history for I have actually primed my first DW miniatures.  Behold, Covenant Zenos, a Russian dreadnought, battleships and cruisers, and a French Dreadnought, Carrier and Support Cruisers (oh my!).  Primed in grey.  Hopefully this post will be followed within a few weeks of more primed, base coated and detailed DW minis (as well as Firestorm Armada and Babylon 5 Wars).

General Discussion / Real History
« on: October 19, 2014, 10:30:31 pm »
Came across this little article on the awesome interweb.  Although not strictly naval, I found several of the them quite interesting, several that I had never seen or heard of before, and several that translate(d) well into Dystopian Wars.

Came across this today.  Couldn't help but think of the Blazing Sun Kagoshima and the Ottoman Hisar.

The Swap Shop / Terrans for Sale/Trade
« on: September 21, 2014, 03:36:52 pm »
Terran
Razorthorn Class Battleship
Sentinel Class Cruiser (4 total, 1 full squadron+1)
Pilgrim Class Frigate (12 total, 3 full squadrons)
730 Point fleet before upgrades
All ships are unassembled (six of the pilgrims are one piece while the others six are not) and not primed/painted.  I'd prefer to sell/trade as a set, but open to piecing it out.  As a set, there is a bonus Battlefoam tray to hold them all (the Frigates are stacked two deep, but it all fits perfectly).  Great set to start your Terran fleet.

The Swap Shop / Sorylian for Sale/Trade
« on: September 21, 2014, 03:31:54 pm »
Sorylian
Swordbreaker Class Battleship
Morning Star Class Carrier (2)
Skyhammer Class Cruiser (8 total, 2 full squadrons)
Scythe Class Frigate (10 total, 2 full squadrons)
Arrow Class Escorts (6 total, 3 for each of the carriers, not pictured)
1235 Point fleet before upgrades
All ships are assembled except for the carriers.  One of the cruiser's forward hull is slightly warped/bent but you should be able to straighten it out with a warm water bath (refer to the Spartan community site for more info).  None are primed/painted.  I'd prefer to sell/trade as a set, but open to piecing it out.  As a set, there is a bonus Battlefoam tray to hold them all (the cruisers and Frigates are stacked two deep, but it all fits perfectly).  Great set to start your Sorylian fleet.

News and Rumors / Dystopian Wars New Chinese Minis

Up in the Spartan pre-order stuff.  The fact that the Chinese Sky Fortress is just an enormous plane that happens to have a runway/landing strip in the middle of it is way funky and cool!

The Swap Shop / Looking for Miniatures
« on: August 06, 2014, 11:06:55 am »
Not sure if there is a better place for this but...

I've already posted some spare DW and FA minis that I have for sale or trade.  I'll be adding some BFG to that list.

There are now several miniatures that I think are out of production but that I really need to complete some squadrons.  I'm sure that I'm not the only one in this boat.  I was wondering if anyone would be willing to check out the stocks at their local stores (even you VA and non-Colorado guys) and see if you come across these ships.  If so, you could give me the name and number of the place, and hopefully I can make a call-in purchase.

Right now I'm looking for:
Aquan Tsunami Heavy Cruiser
Aquan Manta Battle Carrier

I'd be happy to return the favor if anyone is looking for something in particular.

FACO / Quick Firestorm Games 073014
« on: July 31, 2014, 02:35:46 pm »
Brad and I met at Collectormania last night.  We managed to grab a table before a few dozen Magic people invaded the store for a tournament.  Was good to see a lot of people there as I infer that is a good sign for their business.

Anywho, Brad has never played and I have two (badly played) games under my belt.  So since Stephan was not there to guide us, the plan was to just move and shoot and see how the rules worked.

Brad liked the Dendrinzi look and the fluff so I tried to get some ships cobbled together, but between ill-fitting ship parts and dried up glue, the only Dendrinzi he got to use were some Thraex frigate (thankfully one-piece ships).

I opted to take Terrans, the traditional opponent.  I didnt even know what ships I could field because I had not really looked at what Terrans I had.

I was furiously putting stands together (after scouring three stores for blue-tak or something like it) when Brad showed up.  I showed Brad that his ships were still in the shipyard, not even ready for a shakedown cruise, so we needed to improvise...

ROUND ONE
Dindrenzi/Brad- represented by a squadron of three Directorate Executors subbing in for three Fury-class cruisers.
Terran/Mark- Flying three Relthoza Scarabs playing the part of Terran Sentinels.
Note that all the above ships are one piece and fully assembled...
As for the fight, I didn't take note of any details.  I know that I rolled pretty darn well, Brad a little less so.  We didn't notice that Dendrinzi gun racks are port or starboard till round two, so he used those on me, along with his torps and kinetics as we closed head to head.  I took a pounding.  There was not much maneuvering.  I think he ended up with two badly damaged cruisers while I lost all three.

Observations:
*Terran torp effectiveness decreases as you close while Dindrenzi remains constant.
*I like Terran shields, sector shielding is fun!
*The Dendrinzi cruisers can really take a beating!  DR 4, CR EIGHT!!!  I rolled really well and had several hits of 12 or over, which would have double critted most ships, but not them.  Saved his ships several times.
*Ablative armor on the cruisers is not much of a handicap, you have to have three (out of four) damage points and at that point your virtually toast.  No reason to pay to remove that MAR, may be worth it for large ships though.
*Unlike DW, many ships have fore-fixed weaponry, so a lot more maneuvering would be required in a bigger battle (and/or with more experienced opponents).

ROUND TWO
Dendrinzi/Brad- Three Fury (sans Executor) joined up with two squadrons of (real) Thraex frigates!
Terran/Mark- Three Scarabs (impersonating Sentinels) joined by three Relthoza Venom destroyers impersonating Terran Pilgrims and three (real) Armsman frigates.

In both rounds, Brad usually won initiative (which we only remembered to actually roll for between turns in the second round).  His first turn cruiser fire didn't do much while the return fire from my cruisers got a reactor critical on one of his, blowing it up and I think damaging both a nearby cruiser and frigate.  From there it went really one-sided (the wrong side).  About the third turn in, I noticed his gun racks can't shoot forward but didn't really matter at this point.  Near the end, I had two frigates and a cruiser and he still had a cruiser and five frigates.  By the end of the game, some luck die rolls on may part left him with only a severely damaged cruiser and damaged frigate while all of my ships received posthumous commendations for valor, good shield upkeep and good point defense!

Observations:
*The lack of weapons arcs loaded for ALL weapons on ship stat cards (for no good reason that I can think of) sucked
*By virtue of more ships and three squadrons, there was a lot more maneuver in round two than one, mostly by the frigates trying to move around.  There were several aft shots (CR and DR minus 1) on the cruisers.
*Terran frigates are CR4/DR5 while Dindrenzi are 3/5.  Made it easier to score hits on them, especially with the firing ships being damaged or with single ship squadrons.

Overall, we both had a good time.  We used up a lot of 6s, so we should play on opposing sides in the next game (or we'll be disadvantaged).  Brad eeked out two pyrrhic victories.  We both made a few mistakes/misjudgments about some rules.  And we'll be better prepared to take on the rest of all ya'll!

Brad, anything you want to add/deny/refute?

Firestorm Armada / New Firestorm Rulebook
« on: July 31, 2014, 01:39:24 pm »
Ran two quick FA games last night, just to test out the new rules as I have only played twice and my opponent had never played.  A few quick reads of the rulebook did not reveal that it really is kinda hard to use in the middle of a game.  Many rules are hodgepodged in different sections (via the index) and you have to look in all locations to find what you're looking for.

Firing arcs seemed to be a BIG issue.  For example, looking at ship stats, Dindrenzi gun racks don't have arcs listed.  Couldn't find anything on them, so we made up our own arcs.  Looking for something else, I ran across "gun racks have either port OR starboard", but this was three turns into the game and the damage had already been done.  Turrets are not listed in the index, but do not have arcs defined in the Directorate ship stats.  I'm sure I'll run across their arcs when I'm looking for something else.  Should not be hard to have arcs listed for all weapons and not just some of them.  Also resorted to the Spartan forums on several occasions to locate info.

I'm sure it will get better with time, use and familiarization, but I see some definite opportunities for improvement.

What are your impressions of the rulebook?

Modeling Q&A / Dindrenzi Shipyard
« on: July 28, 2014, 11:04:00 pm »
Finally getting around to assembling some Dindrenzi and what a POIA.  Specifically the Conqueror Battleship.  Nothing fits right, having to shave a bunch of resin off just to get things to (kinda) fit, there is about 1-2mm of gap between the two main hull parts once you add on the forward gun array, the top gun array/bridge and the big railgun cannons on the front.  Looks like serious amounts of filler are going to be needed.  Anyone else have this issue?
