Halo project thread
« on: August 11, 2015, 12:46:05 am »
I'll use this space to post pictures of my Halo fleets as they make progress.
First is the UNSC
This is step one, an olive drab base coat. (Somehow I misplaced a frigate, good thing I have boatloads until it shows up again)

Step two is a liberal green wash.

Looking good! I thought about going with a green similar to Master Chief's armor color, but I think I like the scheme I've started already for the UNSC. Will post pics of a test cruiser when it's ready.

Step three is a light green drybrush and then a pale yellow drybrush.

Great idea on the yellow. You're a brave man testing out your scheme on the biggest ship...I usually use a cruiser.  ???

I'm actually testing it on the whole fleet as I go! But I couldn't get a fleet picture that really showed off the highlights with the lighting I have.

I'm trying to keep these Halo ships clean but simple. My goal is to have the whole fleet finished this week.

That coloring makes them look like the Zentradi from Robotech.

Step 4 was to give the weapon mounts and engines a coat of gun metal then block out the panels that will be receiving my spot color.

I really like the green you've chosen. Can't wait to see these on the table.

Step 5 is to add the spot color, yellow, block out some separate panels in a neutral color, and try to paint some windows and lights.

The fleet is coming together. I'll paint the engines later and try my hand at the glow effect. Probably clean up some of the yellow as well. But alas, we're never finished as hobbyists.

For now I give you my yet unnamed fleet and yet unnamed ships.
(Still considered to be in dry dock though!)

Comments and criticism welcome :)

Entire fleet strength

Battle Group Alpha (supported Epoch carrier and Paris frigate element in Arrowhead formation)

Battle Group Bravo (2 Marathon cruisers with 2 Paris frigate elements in Trident formation)

Battle Group Charlie (supported Marathon cruiser with 3 Paris frigate elements)

Battle Group Delta (what should be a supported Marathon cruiser with 2 Paris frigate elements)

Awesome! That is some good, fast work. I'm impressed by how "green" the fleet came out..it is a really nice color combo with the yellow highlights.

Next up are the Covenant. Took me a little while longer to get started on these. Finding a spray that would give me a very smooth surface to work on. Once I finally settled on something it took me no time at all to get them to this point.

First was a careful coat of purple wash, some of the ships got a second coat and I'm fairly happy with how it turned out. I'll probably clean them up a little bit in the future but the base coat looks suitably "alien".
Then I picked out some of the elements with a very bright silver. After that I went over the silver with a blue glaze.

Total fleet strength

Task Force Pious Inquisitor (supported ORS heavy cruiser and SDV corvettes in Oblique formation)

Task Force Triumph (Supported CCS battlecruiser and SDV corvettes in Oblique formation)

Task Force Sacred Shepard (CCS battlecruiser and SDV corvettes in Line formation)

I still have some work to do. I'm going to try a gloss varnish on some of them to see if that changes the way the light reacts with the wash, it might make them seem more alien as well. I also may try my hand at some low key OSL that the Covenant seem to have going for them.

As always, comments and criticism is appreciated.
