A few Halo ships
« on: August 04, 2015, 10:46:00 pm »
Finally got started on building some of the H:FB ships today: a UNSC Marathon-class heavy cruiser, and a Covenant CCS-class battlecruiser.

First, here are all the parts laid out for each ship:

Some assembly required, especially for the Marathon.

Here's the final result (still unpainted--the Covenant ships come molded in purple):

I can see UNSC crews referring to the CCS battlecruisers as "catfish", given the vanes under the "chin" of the ship.

The size disparity between the ships is...daunting. The Covenant SDV-class heavy corvettes are similarly much larger than the UNSC Paris-class frigates.

I'll probably tackle the larger ships tomorrow night. More pics to follow as I get these ships built. Got some painting ideas, not sure yet how I'll proceed.

Next up: the heavies.

This is the UNSC Epoch-class heavy carrier, and the Covenant ORS-class heavy cruiser. Again, look at the size difference!

It's hard to tell in these pictures--the lighting isn't the best--but there is a LOT of detail on these ships. Going to drive me nuts painting them.

Will post pictures of the frigates as I get them together.

Awesome looking models! I can't wait to get my hands on mine now :).

I have to admit, I'm a bit intimidated by the Covenant ships. I figure the UNSC ships will do just fine with my customary drybrushing techniques, but I'm not so sure about those curvascious alien vessels. On top of that, I have never really worked with the color purple for any of my gaming minis, so there is an intimidation factor there as well  ???!

I know what you mean. Drybrushing ain't gonna cut it, I don't think, on the Covenant ships. Not enough pieces that stand up. Oddly, I have a MUCH better idea of how I want to paint my Covenant ships than I do my UNSC ships--although I've not yet put brush to plastic, so we'll see how my idea pans out.

And now, to round out the starter box, the little guys. Here is a UNSC Paris-class frigate and a Covenant SDV-class heavy corvette:

No assembly needed for the UNSC frigate, and the SDV is in two parts--the upper hull and the lower "ring" structure.

The SDV is almost as big as the Marathon heavy cruiser!

And here are some combination pics:

Spartan Games did a good job on the sculpts of these ships.

One of the things that really stands out to me is the hull of the medium and large UNSC ships. The models are built in stages, with each stage wrapping around the previous construction, giving the ship a real three-dimensional look. This was very apparent when I assembled the Epoch heavy carrier last night, but it can be seen in the Marathon cruiser as well.

First, two halves are glued together to create this portion:

This portion will fit into two larger "outer" section of the hull, like this one (note the cut-outs):

Which creates this:

You then add a couple plated sections near the rear of the ship:

And then a piece on top and bottom:

And there you have it! The way the pieces are molded and the way they are designed to fit together really adds depth to these models, even at this scale. I've always been a fan of Spartan's resin ships, and these I think continue that tradition of well-designed, well-thought out models.

I've got two more Marathon cruisers to finish, and about 12 SDV heavy corvettes to assemble, and a bunch of UNSC frigates to cut out. Quickdraw and I are planning a game for this Sunday; I'll take notes and pictures and post up a battle report when we're done.

I need to get building for the 22nd!

I must have missed something somewhere...are you running a demo that day? If so, I can certainly join. Any idea how many tables the store can give us? I have to work in the Springs that morning, but I should be there at or just after the store opens.

(If you and I have already discussed this, then my apologies...work has been crazy lately, and I may have forgotten our conversation  ???)

If you and I and Chris could all get together, we could run three tables of Halo!!

I see you got some pegs to stay in the bases. Still no such luck here...I feel like I've been filing for days.
I have tried to put just about EVERY peg into EVERY slot on EVERY base and not a single one has even remotely stayed in.

Agreed on the quality of the modeling for the ships there. Really stellar work.
I'm in for a demo day. Greg and I should have the rules down by then.

Yeah, the first two were easy...the next ones, not so much.  :-X I'll need to do some whittling myself before we play on Sunday.

Looks like my post got devoured somewhere. No formal demo day, we'd just discussed maybe Halo alongside Firestorm...

Nope, it was me, I'm an idiot, I forgot we had discussed Halo for the 22nd. I'm totally up for Halo that day. I'm an idiot. :-\
