Wade's Hawkers from Genghis Con - WIP
« on: February 17, 2015, 11:55:14 pm »
Dale asked me to post some pictures of the Hawker ships I brought to Genghis Con.  They are still a wip with loads of hardlining, fine detailing, and decals to do as well as engine glow when I feel up to it (or I cheat and finally get an airbrush).

Once my katana freehand brush from Games & Gears shows up I may pull the solar/shield panels off and redo them due to shaky hand while reclaiming the individual cells. I didn't bother painting the interior areas much because they were impossible to get at once glued on and you can't see em on the table anyway.

Excelsior

Resolute

Endeavor

As anyone who played me at the con will know I need to redo some of my magnetizing on flight pegs meant for heavier models.  My Endevours were all sorts of tippy and the Resolutes weren't much better.  Smaller steel balls and magnets work just fine for an Armsman or Teuton, though.

Those are great!  Maybe put a brief tutorial on making the magnetized bases?

I really like the way that you layered the solar segments. It looks really good.

Seconding the effect on the panels. Fantastic job on these!

Very nice! I'm impressed by your hard lining; that is a skill I have yet to master. I might have to get some of those models someday; the designs are lovely  8)

+1 on the solar panels. I didn't notice those at the con. Great work!

Sorry, Stephen, I completely forgot to reply about the magnets.  I bought them from http://www.kjmagnetics.com mostly for my x-wing addiction.  The four pieces I used were...

NSB3 steel balls
http://www.kjmagnetics.com
R421 ring magnets
https://www.kjmagnetics.com/proddetail.asp?prod=R421

The above are good for lighter ships like small Armsmen frigates or Squire Escorts.  Heavier metal frigates are a bit too tippy.

NSB4 Steel balls
https://www.kjmagnetics.com/proddetail.asp?prod=NSB4
R622CS-N c-sunk magnets
https://www.kjmagnetics.com/proddetail.asp?prod=R622CS-N

These work for most everything heavier.  A pair of them works fine to hold a Battleship or Dread in place.  A combo of the smaller R421 magnets and larger NSB4 steel balls seem to be grippy enough to handle a Resolute Cruiser or the surprisingly heavy Endeavor Frigate.  The upper limit for the smaller set seems to be somewhere around the metal Karn frigate.

For the really big ships NSB6 is also works well.  Not really needed on a multi peg ship but I found it useful on heavy single peg ships like the Ares and Makalu.
