Prussian Fleet Modernization
« on: August 31, 2014, 05:00:27 pm »
So, it has been some time since I've painted anything new for my PE. As a result, I'm still pretty much limited to just Mk I models from the first year or so of the game when it comes to my pool of painted Prussians. I've decided it's high time I did something about that! So, I've started digging into the huge back-log of DW Prussian minis that I have been accumulating.  Here is a WIP shot of what I've got started:

That's two battlecruisers, a small Zepplin, and a strike bomber. Off-camera are 4 more bombers and 5 more Zepplins; these are just the test models. More to come!

I'll assume your strike bombers are somewhat similar to mine.  One of my favorite changes in 2.0 is the new rule on bombs--makes bombers SO much more combat effective.

Indeed! And these guys drop Speerschluder bombs...meaning they get Leathal Strike and Redoubtable!

My new Prussians are coming along pretty nicely:

Progress has been slooooow thanks to a busy work schedule, but I'm hoping to have at least these three done tomorrow.

I like the decals.  Can't wait to see the squadron finished.

Actually, I haven't put any decals on them yet. The Iron Cross insignia on the wings of the plane are cast on. I'm not sure I like the feature; the detail is a little coarse, and they are more diddly to paint. I would have preferred a smooth wing and decals I think!

I noticed some Vallejo paint bottles in the background along with your GW paints.  Do you have any preferences for paint brands when it comes to painting your ships/planes?

Not really, no. In general, if I need a particular color, and a line of paints has it, I'll buy it. I came into the Vallejo paints via Flames of War, as they have a lot of ready-made historical colors available.

I have to say, though, that I think I prefer the dropper-style bottles to GW's paint pots!

I'm the same way--I look more for color, not brand.  Although I do seem to end up with more GW paints than any other brand...

Ruckdog, I agree--the dropper-style bottles are much more convenient. Easier to measure paint out that way.

Been a while, but I have another update! I've put the finishing touches on one of my battlecruisers:

Normally, I would leave it at that. However, the positive feedback I recieved from my Austrailians a while back inspired me to go the "extra mile" with this one, and apply some decals and weathering to it. Here is the result:

Still lots more to come! Now that my schedule has settled down somewhat for the moment, I'm pressing ahead with getting caught up in my painting.

Okay! here is another quick update shot:

I'm closing in on finishing my Sturmbringer sub, the second battlecruiser, and the three support cruisers.

Hi all! I'm starting in on painting some more re-reinforcements for my Prussian fleet. I finally picked up the new naval box, and need to get some of it painted for Adepticon next month. I've already got plenty of smalls painted, so I'm going to focus on the Elbe, Kaiser Karl, and the Uhlans. Here they are ready for priming!

Made some progress this week; I got them primed, drybrushed, and started in on the decking:

I got the decking painted on the DW models, and started washing some of them. I used to use Devlan Mud for this task, but for these I'm trying out the Army Painter Strong Tone, and it seems to be doing the job.

This shot shows the difference that the wash makes to the appearance of the deck:
