Title: Halo project thread
Post by: Quickdraw on August 11, 2015, 12:46:05 am
I'll use this space to post pictures of my Halo fleets as they make progress.
First is the UNSC
This is step one, an olive drab base coat. (Somehow I misplaced a frigate, good thing I have boatloads until it shows up again)

Step two is a liberal green wash.

Looking good! I thought about going with a green similar to Master Chief's armor color, but I think I like the scheme I've started already for the UNSC. Will post pics of a test cruiser when it's ready.

Step three is a light green drybrush and then a pale yellow drybrush.

Great idea on the yellow. You're a brave man testing out your scheme on the biggest ship...I usually use a cruiser.  ???

I'm actually testing it on the whole fleet as I go! But I couldn't get a fleet picture that really showed off the highlights with the lighting I have.

I'm trying to keep these Halo ships clean but simple. My goal is to have the whole fleet finished this week.

That coloring makes them look like the Zentradi from Robotech.

Step 4 was to give the weapon mounts and engines a coat of gun metal then block out the panels that will be receiving my spot color.

I really like the green you've chosen. Can't wait to see these on the table.

Step 5 is to add the spot color, yellow, block out some separate panels in a neutral color, and try to paint some windows and lights.

The fleet is coming together. I'll paint the engines later and try my hand at the glow effect. Probably clean up some of the yellow as well. But alas, we're never finished as hobbyists.

For now I give you my yet unnamed fleet and yet unnamed ships.
(Still considered to be in dry dock though!)

Comments and criticism welcome :)

Awesome! That is some good, fast work. I'm impressed by how "green" the fleet came out..it is a really nice color combo with the yellow highlights.

Next up are the Covenant. Took me a little while longer to get started on these. Finding a spray that would give me a very smooth surface to work on. Once I finally settled on something it took me no time at all to get them to this point.

First was a careful coat of purple wash, some of the ships got a second coat and I'm fairly happy with how it turned out. I'll probably clean them up a little bit in the future but the base coat looks suitably "alien".
Then I picked out some of the elements with a very bright silver. After that I went over the silver with a blue glaze.

Total fleet strength

I still have some work to do. I'm going to try a gloss varnish on some of them to see if that changes the way the light reacts with the wash, it might make them seem more alien as well. I also may try my hand at some low key OSL that the Covenant seem to have going for them.

As always, comments and criticism is appreciated.

By the way Ruckdog, I must have missed your comment before. The green wash really changed the overall color of the base coat. From sort of an olive drab boarding on tan to a very rush green.

It looks really great on the table.

I think they look great...very "alien".  Makes me re-think my Covenant scheme. I like the washes, good idea and a good touch. I think that adding a gloss varnish will be a great finishing touch.

Awesome looking ships! It seems like it was a pretty efficient technique, too. I might end up copying it wholesale for my Covenant ships ;).

Thanks! "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery" It'd be great if you use the scheme, it really turned out nice for minimal effort.

If I can suggest anything here are a couple pointers.
First of all, I purchased a citadel 'large wash brush' to get the most out of a brush load of paint.
Second, add maybe 1/4 of a bottle of medium to the wash, it helps keep it from pooling (even though you can see that it still pooled in places).
Finally, work in sections of panels. Especially on the larger ships. By blocking out a section of panels it helps keep a uniform amount of wash otherwise you might run out by overextending your brush stroke.

I've finished my first reinforcements for my Covenant. These are from the fleet upgrade box, it essentially doubled the size of my fleet!

I've also given different ships various combinations of "task force" colors. The different colors will hopefully allow me to field a variety of battlegroups with the correct colors.
Here are some examples.

I like how you have designated your battle groups with bars of solid color in small areas. I've always wondered what the best way to differentiate ships for battle groups would be, and this is subtle and definite.

Agreed, those markings are spot-on, and I like how they don't detract from the overall paint scheme (which is my favorite Covenant scheme that I've seen so far). Can't wait to see them in person so I can shoot them down. Alien b*stards.

Thanks guys. I'm happy with how it looks. I originally tried putting it on the bands on the sides of the CCS's head. It was way too much.
I think I found a happy medium to not distract the eye.

I've been working on some painting the past couple days that I've been home. I've finally decided to expand my UNSC collection and we'll start with some MAC Platforms.

I'm going to add some more basic ships and maybe something else special and leave it at that.

These Covenant escorts weren't finished this week, I worked on these a few weeks ago, but I haven't had a chance to post them.
They came out darker then my other Civenant ships, I used a different white primer. It doesn't bother me too much. I still have some other unpainted CCS and SDV's that I will do with this primer. If anything it will give my fleet some variation.

Looking good.  Those Covenant escorts could easily be mistaken for Aquan frigates.  How big are they?

You're right Mark, they do look suspiciously like Aquan frigates. They are just a touch under an inch wide and just over an inch long.

I've finally finished some more reinforcements for my UNSC. I've added just a small group of the more basic ships so that I can beef up my fleet. I did not plan on adding anything else after this until they announced more releases because the stats for the Valiant were garbage. However, now that it has been updated I may add them for variety because the models are really excellent.

Added some more to my Halo fleets today. I cranked out some flight tokens for my UNSC and Covenant.
The Covenant are painted in a similar manner to the rest of my ships. The UNSC got some variety in color but I did use shades over white for all of them to keep it quick and sort of uniform in style across all of the flight tokens.
