I've finally gotten around to starting in on painting the new Terran models I picked up a while back. Here is my test model, one of the frigates:

As you can see, I've added some decals to this one; the number on the starboard bow is the squadron designation, while the number on the starboard engine housing is the ship's hull number. The port engine housing carries the squadron emblem. All the blue trim is an organizational identifier for the task force the squadron belongs to. And finally, the white stripe on the nose of the ship indicates it is the squadron flagship. This is the same basic scheme I used on my Mk. I terran ships, but I wanted to make the scheme brighter overall and include a little more color. I also wanted to shift to decals as opposed to hand written or painted markings, for a neater appearance. Here is a comparision shot between this frigate and one of my earlier efforts so you can see the difference:

If I haven't said it already I'm really digging the blue on these too. I'm doing something similar on my Syndicate Spur, now if I can just squeeze some time in to finish it up. :P
-
Ruckdog, you continue to set a pretty high bar for painting standards. Those ships look great.
-
Ok! With some of my DW back-log out of the way, it is time to turn back to the Terrans.

On the docket is:
1 Dreadnought
1 BB
3 Cruisers
3 Frigates
2 Destroyers
2 Shield Cruisers
I'm excited to finally start in on these models; some of them I've had for several years!
-
Looking good! Side by side those new Terran ships look great!
We'll have to get some games in soon!
-
Bet you guys $5 he has them painted to show-quality by Sunday....
In my limited Firestorm experience, it seems to me that the Terrans had the biggest and probably best aesthetic upgrade from 1.0 to 2.0. The new Terran sculpts just look really, really good. That said, I cannot figure out why Spartan hasn't yet updated the Terran destroyers. They look TERRIBLE compared to the other Terran ships. Actually, to me, they look like they belong to a different fleet completely. With as important a role in the fleet as the destroyers play, it just boggles my mind that they didn't get a new hull along with all the other 2.0 ships.
Just my $0.02. As always, Ruckdog, can't wait to see how these look when you're done!

LOL, I don't think I'll quite get that far. I have made some progress, though; here is a quick update shot:

I've gotten the drybrushing done, and the base coat on for the blue areas on the FFs and DDs.
-
Just finished highlighting the blue:

Another quick update:
(http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/2/4/684250_sm-.jpg) (http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/684250-.html)
I've gotten all the painted markings done, base coated the metallics, and applied a coat of Glosscote. Next step is decals!
-
Can't wait to see the finished product! As much as I don't like the Terran destroyer models, you're making them look really good.
-
These are gonna be sweet. Can tell already.

+1 They don't look flat which by itself is a huge improvement!

Alright! This first batch is done:

Time for the next batch! I'm starting in on the carrier and shield cruisers:
(http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/2/10/686120_sm-Firestorm%20Armada%2C%20Fsa%2C%20Spartan%20Games%2C%20Terran.jpg) (http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/686120-Firestorm%20Armada%2C%20Fsa%2C%20Spartan%20Games%2C%20Terran.html)

Nice Terrans!
Do you paint the pegs on your stands? They look silverish-gray.

They are actually made of Aluminum...I employ Corsec's Omnistand system for my fleets:

-
Made a little progress on my carrier and Shield Cruisers:
(http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/2/28/691168_sm-.jpg) (http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/691168-.html)
-
Looking good!
Man, those things are a pain to face on the table.
-
Continuing my slow progress...I've gotten all the painted markings done on the carrier and shield cruisers. This included some free-hand work for the carrier. I have since given them a coat of Glosscoat ahead of getting their decals:
(http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/3/15/695867_sm-.jpg) (http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/695867-.html)
As for the rest, I've started the washing process on them:
(http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/3/15/695862_sm-.JPG) (http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/695862-.html)
-
I gotta say, I'm not a fan of the design of the Terran carrier, but you're making it look good. When you get enough of your ships finished, we need to see the whole fleet!
-
Are those little triangles in the middle of that group that was just washed older style frigates? I've not seen those ones before.
-
They're actually the old-style Terran Escorts:
(http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/3/16/696085_sm-.jpg) (http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/696085-.html)
Tiny little things...made of metal, to boot. They are somewhat disappointing models, to be honest, especially in light of Spartan's latest offerings. Still, I've had them for almost 5 years now, so it seems like a shame not to finally finish them!
-
Interesting!
They fit the old style Terran ships nicely but I agree with you the Terran ships really got a boost in asthetic appeal for me when they were updated.
-
Finally getting back around to my Terrans! Here are the cruisers:
(http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/6/14/721724_sm-.JPG) (http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/721724-.html)
And the escorts:
(http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/6/14/721725_sm-.JPG) (http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/721725-.html)
They've been drybrushed, had their metal parts basecoated, and the blue areas done. Next up is markings and decals!
-
The cruisers and the escorts are done! See some pictures here:
http://www.manbattlestations.com/forum/index.php?topic=826.msg5603#msg5603
Next up on the docket is the battleship and dreadnought, along with some SRS tokens and an objective set:
(http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2015/6/28/725049_sm-Firestorm%20Armada%2C%20Spartan%20Games%2C%20Terran.jpg) (http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/725049-Firestorm%20Armada%2C%20Spartan%20Games%2C%20Terran.html)
-
Been a while since I've updated this thread! I'm starting in on a new wave of Terrans! First up is the Reinforcements box:
(http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2016/10/10/832179_sm-.JPG) (http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/832179-.html)
I fully magnetized one of the hulls, but I'm seriously considering permanently gluing this set as torpedo cruisers and getting a second box to do the CLs. The way I do the fluff for my Terrans, having presto-change-o ships doesn't work out so well ;).
-
Those are going to look great with your color choices.
It's funny that you posted this. Last time I was home I started working on my reinforcements box and plan on finishing them shortly after I'm done for the season. This is the second or third time we've worked on Terran ships at the same time.
-
They look quite nice, the dark grey with the blue. Aslo agree, the newer terran ships look really quite nice. ^^
-
I got a wash put on the Torpedo Cruisers and magnetized the light frigates. I just noticed, I wound up with an extra light frigate in the box!

-
Are the pegs just a preference, or have you had problems with the Spartan pegs?
-
Preference, totally. I like to make my bases completely detachable from the model to make them easier to store and transport. After trying a number of different solutions, I settled on the OmniStand system from Corsec Engineering about 5 years ago, and haven't looked back.
-
Making more headway with my Taskforce ships:

-
Making more progress! The paintwork is essentially done on these guys. Next step is a coat of gloss varnish, and then it's on to decals!

-
With the reinforcements box out of the way, it's on to the System Wars box, along with a destroyer and the light cruiser hulls:

Made some progress this week! I got the drybrushing done, and started into the blue highlight areas:

Made a lot more progress last week! This batch is about ready for their decals and then final finishing.

Awesome work! I think the blue-on-blue highlighting turned out great, really makes them pop!

Did you free hand the lettering on the front of the BB?

Did you free hand the lettering on the front of the BB?
Oh, goodness no! My freehand skills aren't nearly that good. I used decals for those ;).
