Title: Status of Forums
Post by: Ruckdog on March 02, 2015, 10:04:49 pm
So, I think I've got most of the forum issues on the run! In addition to the basic functionality, I have the following features and functions we had before the crash put back together, including:

-Rotating Banners
-Avatars

I've also added the following new functions:

-Renaming the "child boards" to "Sub-Forums"

 Still left to fix:

-Global Announcements: I have been unable to restore the Global Announcements mod I was using, due to database errors. In order to fix these, I would need to do some more intensive maintenance and restoration of the forums, which I am naturally hesitant to do after having just patched them back together again! In the mean time, I created an Announcements sub-forum at the top of the Home page as a stop-gap.

-The dice-roller function has not yet been re-installed. I suspect I might get similar database errors, though, so we will see.

Thanks again for all your patience! I'm on a bit of steep learning curve at the moment when it comes to SMF.

I have figured out how to restore links to the blog and home page at the top of the forums. They are now part of the main SimpleMachines menu, instead of being separate larger buttons. If you can't see them, or they won't work for you, let me know!

Had a minor hiccup today...looks like the forum theme got corrupted somehow. I've managed to restore everything from backup ok, but now the blasted Avatars are broken again  >:(! I'll keep looking at the issue. More to follow!

Based on some requests, I've added spoiler functionality to the forums. It is the "Sp" button in the topic bar. Looks like this when used correctly:

[spoiler]This is a test spoiler.[/spoiler]

Additionally, I've got some limited Avatar capability rigged up. Unfortunately, I still haven't been able to lick the issue I've been having with the upload directory. However, I've now set it up so that  you can host an avatar photo somewhere else and direct link to it. Sort of a band-aid fix, but it is better than before!

Is there some problem with the mobile device version of the forums?  It seems as though since the Podcast option was added to the mobile drop-down menu on the MBS home page, whenever I select Forums I get a page error.  Any ideas?

Note, this is only happening on my iPhone.  It works just fine on my PC.

I'm having the same issues. iPhone only. Works fine on iPad and MacBook.

Odd..I'll take a look when I get home later tonight. I didn't do anything to specifically alter the menu link to the forums; I just added a link to the podcast page. That must have screwed with the other menu options somehow  ???.

Ok! I think I fixed it. I had to tweak the menu link slightly from "manbattlestations.com/forum" to "manbattlestations.com/forum/index.php." I was able to access it normally from my iPhone; give it a try and let me know if it is working for you guys now.

Looks like we've been hacked based on the ad postings that just showed up.

Not hacked, per se. These look like bots that made it past the Captchas. They will be cleaned up shortly.

Quick question Ruck.
I sent a message to Landlubber today using the PM function. I wanted to check it later and see if I had forgotten something (it's a scenario idea). However, I cannot find the message. After some clicking I found my "sent items" but it says there is nothing in that box. Am I missing where that sent message would be?
Thought I would post here, in case other folks have trouble with the PM function.

For what it's worth, I did receive the message.  :D

Well that's a little helpful...
When you reply to it will you quote the whole thing so I can see everything I wrote.
Thanks

Unfortunately, aputomatically saving sent messages is disabled by default. One way to keep a copy of your message is to click the small box at the bottom of the text entry field that says "Save a Copy to my Outbox."  Alternatively, you can go into your message settings and set it up to do this by default. Sounds like Greg will be able to help you out though ;)

Great news, everyone!

I've finally managed to fix the attachements directory issue, so all of you should be able to upload avatars and make attachements to posts again.

There is also a new Gallery feature! You can find the link in the menu, and also here:

http://www.manbattlestations.com/forum/index.php?action=gallery

The gallery has a feature that generates the BBcode you need to add your pictures to your posts! Just copy and paste the code into your message, and bingo!

Nice! I'll give the Gallery a tryout today!

Just finished cleaning up another major wave of spam (ugh). What happened is, we had admin approval for all new registrations turned on. I tried turning it off yesterday, and within 12 hours we had a few dozen spambots posting inappropriate material on the forum. Should all be cleaned up  now, though.

Good job!  It was rather excessive.

All, another wave of spambots has been hitting the registration link again lately. None have made it through near as I can tell as I still have manual approval turned on for all new members. If you were trying to create a legitimate account and I accidentally deleted it along with the bots, let me know and I'll make sure I get  you set up!
