Firestorm System Wars Phase 1 is Released!
« on: June 24, 2015, 07:11:01 pm »
There is a new PDF available on the Spartan page! It contains the stats for the new Invasion fleets, as well as some ways to link Armada and Planetfall games. You can get it from the SG website:

Some early thoughts I had...

Most of the Commanders seem to have minor but flavorful effects, akin to how Theme Lists work for Warmachine. But not Rules-bombs like GW Commander rules. Solid overall if in need of refinement.

Each Commander does offer a distinct advantage in System Wars scenarios, usually one way or another to max out more Planetfall Points. But of course, those have to be delivered, and each P-Fall point means less firepower for shooting down enemy threats.

Relthoza don't have significantly more PF points in the core Assault fleet. (In fact, Sorylians do!)
But Relthoza can almost all approach under complete Cloak. They won't be spitting any firepower, but they're more guaranteed than anyone to deliver the troops on target. Consequently, they have VERY limited conversion value to non-System Wars
scenarios. Assault Carrier makes for an interesting Carrier option in a regular scenario, likely all about the boarding. But the Assault Cruiser and Frigates are worthless in conversion.

In contrast, Directorate, Dindrenzi, and Sorylian all are solid in conversion to conventional usages. Less firepower, but lots of Boarding Action!

Aquans convert in a weird way, offering only a cheap carrier and dedicated minelayers.

Terran Carrier can make a solid changeover with Cruisers added.

Terrans and Dindrenzi both offer new Escort options to their respective Alliance/League, crazy tough in both cases.

Looking at scenario balance, and the way scenarios limit Planetfall assets, I don't think we'll see any need to buy a second box set of these ships. But they'll absolutely add flavor in scenario and campaign, and fill gaps otherwise.

Thanks for the thoughts...I admit, I haven't had time to dig through the stats thoroughly myself. I did notice during my first skim through the PDF that Spartan has included a mug shot for each of the commanders...which means we finally know what all the races look like! This is the first time the've done that IIRC.  8)

yes, they're finally addressing one of the most persistent weaknesses in the product - the background details.

To me, GW lives solely on its fluff, as the rules long ago ceased to have any appeal. But for Spartan, all the great rules are wasted if no one feels the background supports the interest. The sculpts have carried a lions share so far. But if they plan to move to include a skirmish game as rumoured, they need more racial backgrounds and pics!

I couldn't agree more! There was more fluff in the old BFG rulebook than in all 3 editions of Firestorm Armada combined. I'm still keeping my fingers crossed that Spartan Neil's promise of background fluff PDFs hitting the website this year holds true. After having seen what is being done with the fluff for Malestrom's Edge (a new minis game being produced by the folks that run Dakka Dakka), I have to think that Spartan can do better in this area  :(.

When I heard the background for M-Edge, it made me LESS likely to want to play... ;-)

Beyond Firestorm, only new fluff I need to immerse in is HALO. I was never an original fan, but need to bone-up on the background casue the new game will go nuts locally.

Not sure how wild I am about the MEdge fluff either; but be that as it may, you can't fault the developers for not putting in a lot of time and effort into developing their game setting! They've even got novels out for it already.

Yeah, M-Edge at least made a solid effort, whereas fluff and pretty pictures seems to be a relatively new idea for Spartan. :-)

Perhaps its fitting that the big thing to add character to the game is ...well... characters!

Indeed!

Anyway, back to the original topic:

After digging into the rules a bit, I have to say that I really like the way Spartan is linking the two games via the Battle Log. It seems like a fairly elegant and simple way to go about it, although I do have two concerns. First, it doesn't allow players to directly link simultaneous games of Armada and Planetfall. Second, given its somewhat abstracted nature, the Rewards to a Planetfall game might not necessarily make sense given what happened in the Armada game. Such as, you might have the Terrans doing a nuclear bombardment even though all of their nuke-equipped ships were blown up in the Armada game. These are pretty minor quibbles, though. Overall, I like the system quite well.

As for the rewards themselves, they sound pretty cool, but I don't have enough PF experience to say how useful they are. I'd be interested in your thoughts on that ;).

I'll need to play a tad more, and try the rewards, but using Theory-Fall I'd say some are pretty mild, while others could be game turners if not prepared for.
Mild Ones:
-- +2 Armored Move
-- 1/ game reroll for Shields
-- +1" Infantry Move
-- Remove Lumbering
-- Reroll Damage Repair
-- Reroll 1 Pinpoint Die per game

Middle Impact:
-- Cloak adds hard target for one squad
-- +1 Tactics Bonus
-- Helix Choice Changes
-- Pre-zeroed Sky Drop marker
-- Extend Dindrenzi Ranges or Increase their DR

Potential Huge Impact:
-- +D3 Terran Artillery markers!!!
-- Reduced logistics Pt Cost
-- Extended Command Range
-- 8" of Enemy Recon move
-- Reduce Enemy Designators to Heavy Dice
-- +1 Die on all Command Disorder Checks
-- Ignore one whole Disorder check failure
-- Raise a Relthozan Drone Squad to Standard (and thus Elite near a Node)
-- Directorate force an entire attack reroll

As their first sketch system for integrated campaigning, its a good framework. But plenty is left for them to fill in from here.
I'd rather half a half system while more is developed, than nothing at all :-)
