Firestorm Armada / Line of Sight, or Screening Ships
« on: March 13, 2018, 09:10:48 pm »
I am working on the scenario for this years GenCon event.  Currently, I'm planning on a scenario wherein one side must escort a number of cargo ships across the board.  In taking a look at the Line-of-Sight (LOS) rules, I've been pondering whether there is a different way to deal with LOS, and if it would be too much of a hassle.

Recognizing that the rulebook states that ships are tiny in real-scale on the board, and that ships do not block LOS, what if they did?  What if the LOS for an attack was drawn from center post to the target center post, but if it passes across an intervening ship, then LOS is either blocked or impeded?  This would give Escorts and Small craft something to actually escort.  This doesn't make a lot of sense when you consider that space is 3D, but until we all get holo-tables, we're stuck playing on a 2D surface.

Maybe the level of impedance is based on ship size (Small, Medium, Large).  Or gives a +1 or +2 to the to-hit target.  Perhaps only Direct weapons are blocked, and Indirect weapons are not.

What do you think?

I can think of a few ways to speed the game play up, but it involves a bit more abstraction and changing the turn sequence.  Then is it still DW or FSA?

I look forward to read your thoughts in EP2.

What ideas would you propose?

I'm happy to share the ideas that our group was working on for the next iteration of Firestorm Armada.   Send me a pm if you'd like to take a look.

Had a snafu, need to make some edits.   Fortunately I have time off over the holidays.  Send me your email address if you want a copy once I have it ready to go.

There is a more lengthy post about it on the WC forums, but I've posted online a proposed rules document on my website at firestorm.pymapper.com if anyone is interested to review.

How important is trying to reduce the amount of time needed to play a game?  I'd love to be able to play larger battles (1200+) in a more reasonable amount of time.

As we know, Spartan attempted to bring to life a third edition of Firestorm Armada this past year.  Just reading between the lines on how Warcradle is looking at Dystopian Wars, I would guess that Firestorm has some significant changes in its future, even if that future is a long way off.  Assuming that the next edition will not be a simple tweak from second edition, what kinds of things would you guys like to see revised?

That's a good idea, providing more points to the defender, and limiting them to medium/small class ships.  Worth trying out.  Thanks!

Send me a PM with your email.   I have a bunch of ship images that you could use for your project.

@Ryjak, is this method better or faster than using the 'pivot' method that was proposed for 3.0?

I happened to have a conversation with the Design Lead (Stuart) the day they announced.  He was very approachable, and was willing to answer (to the best he could) questions about the future of FSA.   He was open to viewing the rules work that we've been working on, and seemed to be genuinely interested in what we could contribute.  I think it will be a good thing for all of us.

I have one scenario that uses these.   The sides set up on opposite diagonal corners, with a transit gate in one corner.  The freighters set up in the opposite corner.

OBJECTIVES AND TERRAIN – The Defender in this Scenario should use three ships to represent their Convoy Ships within their Deployment Zone prior to Deployment beginning. These vessels have their own Profile (see below). The Attacker must place a Transit Gate in the location shown.

DEPLOYMENT – Once all members of the Convoy have been placed, Deployment is determined using the rules on Standard Deployment of the rulebook.

GAME END – The Game will last for 6 Turns. Should the Defender manage to reach the Transit Gate with 2 or more of their Convoy Vessels they are automatically victorious.

SPECIAL RULES – Each of the Convoy ships has the following Profile:

NAME           Freighter
DESIGNATION   Convoy Vessel
SIZE CLASS   Large
MASS           Capital
SHIP POINTS   n/a

DR   CR   MV   TL   HP   CP   PD
6   13   7   2      8    3    7

MARs
Ablative Plating (2), Strategic Value (12TV, Attacker Only)
