A bit of Halo Dirt Fight.  Tanks hit hard and die fast.  Some say that Spartans are OP.  Maybe.  But the one Covenant player beat all three of the USNC players.  (Your Spartan can be alive while you are being crushed in VPs...)

Zorper's Adepticon Pics:

A couple of my PlanetFall games.  I had a great time, and even managed to win one.

Zorper's Adepticon Pics:

In the 'over the top category', these four pics here are not of a game, they are of a display board!  (These guys did a 40K display board as well, which they said had a working beer tap. I didn't get time to find out if they were BSing me, but I bet they were telling the truth.)

I can bring a bridge made of my Deadzone terrain, but I don't know if I've got two feet worth and it does not look steampunky.

I can pencil in the 19th.  I do not have Firestorm so maybe I'll just watch.  I'd like to play some Dirt Fight so that I can try out my Adepticon list.

Awesome.  I'm going to make a model of my basement to put in MY basement.

HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Seriously, though...my 1:1 scale hobby room doesn't even look that good.

+1

Didn't care for the new series, but I was religious for the original as a kid.

...Arachnid war in Nexus magazine (another age reference Zorper) and the updated version on the web somewhere.  ...

I think my friend still has his old Nexus magazines.  I hadn't thought about those in 30 years.  There was a time you had to hunt for gaming info...

Halo Ground Command / Re: Demolition

My opinion on the PlanetFall and Dirt Fight deltas:

-The reaction mechanic dominates Dirt Fight, and I think it works very well.  I don't know if it would work with PlanetFall, some units are dependent on showing up and hitting you immediately (Dale....)

-The Halo dice make things less over the top.  Again, I think that works well.

-Dirt Fight units can move flat out and move in any direction.  You have to move in a straight line for flat out in PlanetFall.  I think that PlanetFall captures large machines lumbering across the field better than Dirt Fight.

-Everything is more squishy in Dirt Fight.  I can see pro and con for that.  Frustrating to see your guys die.  Good to see a good sized game over in less than three hours.

Other notes:

-We need more terrain on the board.  We need to develop the concept of large areas of cover, like a particular large area being designated as rocky and providing heavy cover, or large stands of trees giving light over.

-I think that the UNSC can hold ground well, but I don't think any of us are using the Covenant the way we need to be.  I keep thinking of them as humans that I am trying to keep alive.  They are actually religious fanatics that should charge en masse at a particular objective, using the bodies of the ones in front as cover.

Starfire can be fun too.  As small a battle or as big as you want.

Starfire is a kick ass little space game.  Totally underrated.

I'm about 99.9% sure Sky Galleons of Mars is the same as Space 1889.  Unless you are talking about the Space 1889 hex based ground combat game, which I'm pretty sure nobody ever actually played.

Or how about Star Force Alpha Centauri (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starforce:_Alpha_Centauri).  Why not go full 3D on a 2D map on your first space game?

I would love to play some Sky Galleons.  I'm up in Littleton, so if you give me a few weeks notice I can dust off (20+ years of dust) my copy and head on down.

I've got my Federation Commander (simpler SFB, and actually quite fun) and Sky Galleons of Mars for an obscure game day.
