Title: Quickdraw's French
Post by: Quickdraw on January 05, 2017, 03:24:07 pm
Hi everybody. Over the past week I have been working on some French land units. I haven't ever played on land and I think it will be a fun way to keep Dystopian Wars fresh.

Here are the land units

And some air support

@Quickdraw, great work as usual! I like the French flags, and the offset on the tank turrets is a nice touch. Can you post a few more pics of the large landship?

Guess I better start painting up my FSA land forces...

Thanks
I can do that tomorrow when I have a chance. I'll take some closer, lower shots of some of the squadrons.

As requested. Here are a couple more shots of the Bastille.

Very nice, very nice. The colors wouldn't fit into combat on the plains of Europe...so I'm getting a "French Foreign Legion" vibe from these models.

Thats what i was thinking. Sort of a Northern Africa locale.

WOW!  Really look great!  Lets get a land battle set up soon so I can see them in person.

Great stuff! You should name your Bastille as Le Beau Geste

I finished some more land units. The second Bastille can act as a Danton Landship because there isn't a model for it. The bombards are one of my favorite models and they perform really well so a second squadron was a no brainer. Then we have some heavy tanks, these put out the most dice of any of the French units and they work great, even if they are pricey for a full set of three. Six on the table would be deadly but also a huge chunk of points.

Awesome work! I really like this scheme. This will work well in the forthcoming Africa campaigns, I think ;). The Tri-color on the track guards really sets them off.

Thanks Ruckdog. The Africa setting will be pretty neat. I'm going to rethink my basing technique, hence why I haven't based these yet. I'm not impressed with the medium ballast I used earlier. I might try the Citadel texture paints but jeeze are they expensive.

Quickdraw, great stuff as usual. Really like the theme. +1 for the tricolor on the treadguards, really makes the models pop.

Is there a requirement to base the tanks and landships in Dystopian Wars? I know the models came with bases, but I can't remember if it's required to use them.

Yeah, the ballasts and standard basing grits make the DW land models look like they are navigating a boulder field!  :o

The best solution I've found for basing textures with DW land minis is to use "Fine Basing Grit," which is basically fine sand. I think GW and GF9 both sell versions of this. The result looks something like this. I used the stuff raw on this landship; if I had to do it over again, I'd probably paint, wash, and drybrush the sand after application to the base, which would probably tend to tone down the texture a little bit more:

If  you look at the pics in this post on the blog, how this material compares to ballast; I used it on the FSA units, as I painted them first and, like you, didn't like the result.

That looks a lot better! I like that quite a bit more. Thanks for the tip Ruckdog, I may try that instead.

Landlubber, as far as I can tell everything in the land game is supposed to have a base. The footprint is a little more important with the use of different terrain types. It helps to standardize the different size classifications.

Yeah, that's what I figured. Guess I'll have to dig out all those pieces of blue acrylic...

I'm adding some naval assets to this page. In an attempt to get my French painted I'll be completing one squadron a month (haven't had inspiration to get them done in batches). I forgot to post last month which were the corvettes. This month I've finished the destroyers. Here they are together.
I've worked from an earlier test scheme on one of my battleships, you can see it in the shipyard here -->

Great work, as usual! I like the small black "ticks" you added to the scheme; its a nice detail.

Cool!  Do all of the corvettes have different emblems/flags on their afts?

Thank you thank you.
Mark - I've decided that each of my naval squadrons will have an emblem similar to each regional coat of arms in France. So my corvettes have the emblem of Aquitaine while the destroyers show Lorraine.

Well it's the end of the month and I was able to finally get a squadron of French ships done. These are the cruisers, not much to say about them. I like the turrets on these. Both of the turrets are pretty cool looking.

Are those some of the newer french cruisers?  I have not seen those fore turrets before, they are sweet looking (as are the ships).

I'm not sure if they are new or not. They are the Dieppe cruisers. The forward turret is supposed to be a torpedo turret.

Looking good! I need to get some of those cruisers, I don't have Dieppe-class yet.

The newer cruisers yes, but still look awesome. *nods* Painting is really nice too. :)
