« on: February 28, 2018, 11:45:28 pm »
The premier has been announced for April 11!

If you haven’t caught up on seasons 1 & 2, there is still time ;).

I can’t wait to see what gets covered in this season.

Well, the second season didn't get through the full story in Caliban's War, so I wouldn't be surprised if they finish off that storyline . They probably won't go into Abaddon's Gate by the end, since the end of Caliban's War is the perfect cliffhanger for the end of a season. And the story of Abaddon's Gate really is somewhat self-contained - going partially into at the end of S3 would really break the flow.

But then, the screenwriters haven't shown much respect for the storyline so far, so I could be completely off.

Agreed!
Having Miller appear to Holden with his famous "We need to talk.." line is a perfect season ending cliff hanger! .
Having read the books now, I think the screenwriters have done a great job with their adaptation,YMMV I guess.

Not sure if you can post a video...but you should just be able to post the URL. I'm getting pretty excited myself, season 3 is right around the corner! I've been watching Krypton on SyFy, and they show a lot of teaser for the Expanse. Also (probably since SyFy and USA are owned by the same parent company) they showed a teaser for season 3 of Colony on USA during the Krypton premiere. That's another good show, and the next season is starting in May...can't wait!

Looks like Syfy is cancelling The Expanse after season 3...

Praying for a pick-up from Netflix or others...

Sounds like the reality was that SyFy didn't like their deal with the show producers after all, so reneged. (I mean why not, even our Presidente does that nowadays...  ::) )
More details here:
https://deadline.com/2018/05/the-expanse-canceled-syfy-after-three-seasons-to-be-shopped-1202388026/

So SyFy had to rely on real-time, first-air ratings, which is frankly idiotic in this day and age. So they look like extra idiots cancelling a show at 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.

What's interesting is that SyFy is heavily invested in NIGHTFLYERS from GRRM, yet GRRM seems heavily annoyed at SyFy for shoddily treating his protégé (Daniel Abraham, Expanse co-author). I wonder if he'd take his pique out on them, say by doing no press?

Between this, and FOX cancelling LUCIFER, there's two networks I need no longer watch. (And I can finally break it off with GOTHAM)

Really hope this happens. As of right now all I can find online is that Amazon is "in talks" over the series, but hopefully it will come to fruition.

@Dale, yeah, SyFy has really lost their way I think. I mean, it was good when they finally got rid of that Ghost Hunters dreck, but they don't seem to *get* science fiction. Every once in awhile they have a hit (SG1, BSG, Atlantis), but even a broken clock is right twice a day. I think I may be done with that network as well. I was on the fence about Krypton, but now I think I'll only use them to watch the rest of Season 3 of Holden and company.

Speaking of which...last week's episode was GREAT. Best so far this season.

Hard to say who I love more, Amos or Bobby.

I must be losing my love of books or something - I got 1/4 the way through book 4 of the Expanse series and sent them all back to my father. I was already feeling some trepidation after book 3, and some of the characters in both 3 and 4 are either completely unfathomable, or just completely irredeemable. Plus the authors seem to take pleasure in describing situations that are so far gone and hopeless its just depressing. I can understand that sometimes literature is designed to challenge us or show the human spirit in its full, but the situations in books 3 and 4 can almost be described as torture porn. And the ending of book 3 was just a slog and grind, almost to the point of a deus ex machina to be resolved.

I read for entertainment and to unwind after my work - I don't need my entertainment to make me even more depressed than I currently am. Even if the start of it was good sci-fi.

That depends on what you've actually loved about books. Feel-good entertainment? Thought-provoking insight to the human condition? World view confirmation?

I read for entertainment and to unwind after my work

The analogy that EXPANSE is the Game of Thrones for science fiction is apt. It isn't there as feel-good adventure. So maybe your core premise for reading was off from the start, and its not the series for you.

If anything, I think THE EXPANSE reminds that exploration and colonization, doubly so in space, is HARD. And unforgiving. But the human spirit, and those who act with virtue, can prevail. That those with dark pasts (Amos) and regretted choices (Naomi) can find redemption on that hard path of doing what's right, not easy.
A Writer can't make a character's journey tough without making the reader's journey tough. THANOS isn't a scary villain if he loses to a bad but hopeful plan. And just because someone is "good" doesn't excuse or compensate for bad decision making.
Having the attention to detail and consequences that the EXPANSE does, I think its the BEST science fiction. Nobody is left off the hook by plot armor, or to make something upbeat.

The 4th book though, that isn't Science fiction per se (save for the Protomolecule secrets, backstory, and such). The 4th book is a Western, plain and simple. And a complex one on the level with THE SEARCHERS, HIGH NOON, or UNFORGIVEN. While they're emotional reads, ultimately virtue prevails. Not just being good, but being virtuous, and sticking to the struggle. The complex decisions, the grey areas, all that morality play is as fascinating to me as the application of simple Newtonian mechanics for plot purposes.

If the 1st 4 books were too challenging for your tastes, then I agree  - do NOT proceed. Nothing gets easier from here on out. And the stakes, well ... lets just say while reading the 5th-7th books, I was more upset about things in the books than about outrages in the real world.
To get that sort of emotional engagement, that makes a book most precious to me. But I kinda crave catharsis when I read/listen/watch, so such stories aren't for everyone.
And please don't read judgement into all this - There are plenty of other works where I can't muster empathy enough to engage - for example, "Breaking Bad" - f**k that noise. Having seen some close to me have lives ruined by drugs, the premise of sympathy with almost any drug dealer isn't enough to get me in the door.
