MBS Monthly Poll #33: Halo Fleet Battles
« on: February 16, 2019, 02:30:37 pm »
Coming up in Episode 40, Greg and Andy are going to be taking a look at the state of the Halo Fleet Battles game by the late, great Spartan Games. Given that the license for the game has reverted back to Microsoft and 343 Studios, HFB is arguably the most "dead" of any of Spartan's systems. There is still a dedicated following for it, though, and we want to see how many of you out there are still playing. As always, any responses to this thread will be discussed in the Community Sitrep segment of the podcast!

When the HALO stuff came out, I was solidly in the camp with Firestorm Armada.  Budgets being what they are, there wasn't room for another miniatures game in my lineup.  Also, I'd never been a big fan of the HALO franchise (nothing wrong with it, just never got into it) so that wasn't a draw for me.  Then, as SG started on their downward slide, it seemed prudent not to jump in.  In speaking with the local FLGS owner, he noted that initial sales were good, but it was only going to collectors, as the game wasn't ever played in-store, despite their attempts to support it.

I think they still have some boxes sitting on the clearance shelf, even today.

The concepts seemed interesting with the ways the bases worked, but the actual setting and factions were not interesting to me.  The money maker for the Halo setting would have seemed to be a 28mm skirmish game that reflected the shooter, rather than the space navy elements.

Never had any interest in the Halo franchise. My interests lie more in the directions of historical minis, see for example Seekrieg, or hex and counter space games like Star Fleet Battles (waning) or Starfire.

There wasn't an option for "I had the game, played when I could, but ditched it when the license was lost" :-)

I had to go with "own the game, play rarely". Only because I have so few opponents here.

I'll save most of my comments for the podcast, but in short I REALLY enjoy the game, and not just because I'm a fan of the IP. RuleBrittania is I think hitting the nail on the head, Spartan probably should have started with a ground combat game before doing the fleets, as that's what most people think of when they think of Halo.

Looking forward to playing this at Adepticon and meeting some of the other community members, and very much looking forward to discussing it on the podcast.

The design and production quality of the Halo ships Spartan put out are excellent, and I am glad I was able to pick up as many as I did even though I've never played the actual game.
If my wife asks, I only spent half as much as I wanted to...

I'm always still game to play if you have a loaner fleet and we want to coordinate a night down here or at Collectormania :-)

All I ask is a mere 60 days advance notice ;-)

HA. Well I do have a few thousand points of both UNSC and Covenant (and most of it is painted!), so I'll take you up on that offer. Maybe sometime in late April?  :P

March even, if late month. Are you coming down for KoboldCon in April - we could plan like a Sunday event for that maybe. :-)
