General Discussion / Re: What are you reading?

Just finished Shattered Sword. Inspired to buy it after Jonathan Parshall was on episode 20.

Awesome! How did you like it?

I really liked it. The level of detail was well past any I'd seen on the battle. I had no idea, for example, about CAP rotations going on right up to the point the dive bombers hit.

Reading about the machinations in the Japanese navy, it really makes every think that it was just a matter of time until Kido Butai got punched in the mouth pretty hard.

Having pledged to more kickstarters than is maybe wise, funds are collected at the end of the campaign. Only if it hits its goal. If it doesn't, nothing is collected.

General Discussion / Re: MBS Podcast Episode 21

Good episode! I would suggest the Alan Lewrie series by Dewey Lambdin for naval book series. The main character is a bit, ah, saltier than Hornblower, though. A bit of a rake...

Enjoyed the discussion of minis. It is nice to have some historical game content on occasion. Now, I need to paint my OoB for the battles around Guadalcanal. At least 1/6000 are pretty simple to paint.

I expect rules for shore batteries, land based air and amphibious operations but once those forces are 'feet dry', there are plenty of rule sets available for all periods.

Visions of putting Advanced Squad Leader together with Seekrieg V. Possibly one of my more insane ideas...  ;D

General Discussion / Re: Missiles vs Torpedoes?

I always think "missiles". Probably comes from playing a lot of Starfire.

That and the Honor Harrington books. The later battles where the fleets start throwing around Webers of missiles at each other. :)

Roll Call / Re: Near Seattle
« on: May 14, 2017, 01:38:17 pm »
By and by, where do you play in the Seattle area? I was stationed in Bremerton from 2007-09, and I used to play at the old GW Bunker in Bellvue, Comics Keep in Bremerton, and down at the Games Matrix in Tacoma.

Play? Pretty much at home on the dining room table or PC. :) Play mostly solo over the years. Farm towns in eastern Washington aren't rife with players. By the time I got to college, it was habit...

I'd ventured into the GW bunker to buy some things before I soured on GW. Game Matrix has pried my wallet open more than once, but it's a 30+ mile drive from where I live in Renton.

Roll Call / Near Seattle
« on: May 14, 2017, 12:42:49 pm »
I've played wargames off and on, mostly solo, going back to my very first: Victory in the Pacific. Brief moment of silence for Avalon Hill...

Always been interested in military history, particularly the Pacific theater in WWII. WWI gun battles are a more recent interest. Games I've played, or am interested in, include Seekirieg IV or V, the GQ series, and Harpoon on the computer.

Some space games on my list, too. Starfleet Battles. Have owned versions of that since Wrath of Khan was in the theater. Starfire. Own, but have not played, Starfleet Armada. I would *love* to find a game that would cover the old anime show Starblazers, preferably at a detail level close to Seekrieg or SFB.

Anyway, I recently found the podcast and am inspired again. :)
