Modern Merchantmen and destroyers
« on: June 27, 2012, 07:38:10 pm »
Some modern merchant vessels.  Norway is GHQ, the others are Sea Wulf.

Modified a British Tamar model to a bulk carrier and fitted a sky sail.

Group shot with the Tamar from my Falklands project.

Will add the new destroyers here too.
2 type 45's from Sea Wulf

and a Udaloy class to finish off my soviet battle group.

Cool!

What's the story with the sky sail?  Do modern ships really use those?  And what is the purpose--balance?  Propulsion?

There's a few ships I've read about using them now, not all that common as yet though.  It is for reducing fuel consumption, ie reducing operating costs.  I think the ones they have now can give fuel savings of up to 35%.

So it seems that you're into historical naval wargaming from several different periods.  What is the Soviet ship going to be used for?

It will join my Russian fleet posted elsewhere on here to help balance the US fleet I have.
