Seems like the guys at Hawk games, who are behind the Dropzone Commander game, are making a space combat game in the same setting. Not a lot has been announced yet; there has been official confirmation that the game is in production, and that one Andy Chambers is attached. Chambers was one of the main developers of BFG back in the day, so this is exciting news indeed!
-
I have high hopes for this. Although I have not played DZC, the minis look really sweet. And Chambers came off as a creative goofball in the BFG world, so that can only be a plus.
-
Did DZC ever get any traction? I think I've only seen it played at my FLGS once, and maybe once at one of the local cons. In fact, the Gamer's Haven owner basically cleaned out all his stock of DZC to make room for Planetfall...I don't think the Haven even carries DZC anymore.
I remember some of the models looking pretty cool.
-
I think, like Spartan, DZC has been hit or miss. Some areas seem to have latched on to it; I remember the minis being readily available in Norfolk, and Major McNichol is going to be meeting up with some friends to play tomorrow (I'll be tagging along to try and get some DW in!).
-
I looked at DZC but didn't get into it
Have since gotten into FsA and now FsP so though interested in this development not sure will get into it
First to market matters
-
Yeah, I think there is an element of that, to be sure. It will really depend on just how good the rules and minis turn out to be. They are going to have to be significantly better to be able to carve out a niche.
That being said, I definitely plan on at least getting a copy of the rules; I have this think about collecting rule sets 8).
-
I gotta say, DZC is a lot of fun to play, and paints up very fast. And the card terrain looks awesome!
Here are my pictures of my DZC experience so far:

Dang, looking good. They have some fantastic minis. Do you have a favorite faction? For play and for the minis? And I love the city-scape terrain too.
And very cool read on the Warhammer/teaching English, by the way.

Those red and yellow dropships (I don't know the factions) always reminded me of the airships from the John Carter movie. Which is to say, they're pretty darn cool.

Good eye Greg!

Sorry I should have specified more: those pictures are from a gaming day I went to (Andy couldn't make it) and includes all four armies present. Mine are the grey-green-green Resistance models, who faced off the Geiger-esque tan Scourge. The first game was between Klarg1's red Shaltari (he's on the Spartan Games forum a lot) and Zaknafn's bone PHR (also on SG forums). Zak wrote up a battle report here:
http://magnetizedtolead.blogspot.com/2015/02/battle-report-1-dropzone-commander-phr.html
It's fun! And cheap. In those ways, very comparable to DW and FS:A to me.
-
Thanks for posting the pictures! It looks like it was s good time. Now I'm really sorry I didn't make it 😀.

"Next time, baby!"
(Don't you love Iron Man 1 references)
-
Hey guys, I was the Scourge player that MajorMcNicol faced off against, and hopefully a DW player soon! Too bad you couldn't make it down Ruckdog, but maybe Major and I could make a trip up to your area. I am always up for a road trip and to see other hobby clubs/stores/gatherings.
-
Glad you made it on the forum, Delta!
For those interested in seeing more of DZC, Delta and I played a game on Sunday. I wrote up a substantial battle report including pictures here:

There's a little DW at the end, too ;)

Sure! Maybe we can meet at the Toy Soldier in Amesbury or something. I'd love to get enough folks from the area posting here to get another regiona club going like the CO and VA ones ;)

There has been some shots released of some of the models for Dropfleet:

Uhg... Add these to the collection of unpainted metal, resin and plastic in my office...
-
Don't do it Mark...turn away from the light...
-
I personally can't wait to see what they do with the other factions, too.
From a gaming perspective, I think it's really interesting that it's not going to be on a space field - but rather in various atmospheric levels above a planet. Should make for interesting new game mats!
Even though I play Resistance in DZC - which is rather unlikely to get any space-faring vessels - I'm still pretty excited about this game.
Oh, my poor FS:A fleets ;)

can't... stop... looking...

I came across this quick rundown of combat from one of the recent cons.
The combined arms element seems interesting.
I've been eyeing some dropzone commander models recently just for the sake of painting. Like some have said already in this thread the game seems to be completely dead in the Colorado region, but the rules seem fantastic.
I always like games with a good objective component. Can't wait to see what the other factions ships look like.
-
Thanks for the link! That's a good find. I continue to watch this game with much interest.
-
Looks like Hawk is going the Kickstarter route!
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/hawkwargames/dropfleet-commander/description
Seems like there are some neat pledge levels in there.
-
Man, this is looking better and better.
-
I know! After looking over the KS, there are a few things that stick out:
1. They are going with multi-part plastics for at least the cruisers, and you will be able to make several ship classes from each kit. Awesome! This is how BFG did it, and it worked out great for providing lots of variety.
2. 4 factions at launch! That is good to see. I've heard it argued that 4 is the minimum number of factions needed to make a new game viable.
3. Sweet bases! It looks like the game is incorporating all kinds of stat tracking into the base for each ship. So, this will mean fewer tokens, while at the same time less book keeping. On the downside, this will be a disappointment for the more traditional modelers that like to paint up their flying bases for their space games.
Overall, it looks like the KS is off to a great start! I have to admit, I'm seriously looking at the Commodore pledge level 8).
-
I'm seriously considering the Captain pledge level. Never backed a Kickstarter before.
Yeah, the bases are a good idea. I've watched the first couple "how-to-play" videos, and I really like the sci-fi element of the game--energy spikes, altitude levels, etc. Although if I get into the game, I will likely make some custom stands to represent the ships at different flight levels, sorta like the swim stands I made for the Deep Wars game.
Biggest draw for me, though, is the ship designs. I really like the UCM ships, and the Shaltari are growing on me. Definitely don't look like anything else on the market.
-
Ok! I've officially jumped into the KS. Looks like next summer is going to be pretty awesome...
-
I'll buy in when an LGS can do it retail... ;-)
Otherwise, its a lot of pretty with little sustainment.
-
Valid points... the only issue is that there aren't really any stores in NOVA that stock much in the way of inventory for anything that's not 40k, WM/H, or FoW. As a result, I tend to be more open to jumping on stuff like this. Plus, it lets me serve as an "early adopter" and provide details on the game to all of you 8).

Good point, Dale, totally understand where you're coming from.
I'm about an inch away from backing this just because I like the look of the ships, and I'm getting more and more into spaceship games. From what I saw in the gameplay video tutorials, the way the game plays is very different from anything else I play right now. I have some experience with the ordered activation mechanic from playing Dystopian Legions, and translating that to spaceships seems awfully cool.
Plus, at this point, they've raised so much money that there will be a lot of extras for the backers.
I could see picking this up as an "alternate" game, when I don't want to play Firestorm or Halo (which I consider my two "main" space-themed games). I doubt it will get a large following at the Haven, as DZC never really caught on, even when they were stocking it. But I don't get too wrapped around the axle about that.
-
We're down to the final hours on the Kickstarter, if any of you are still interested! This campaign raised a TON of money, so there will be all kinds of neat extras coming down the line.
-
Ok Ruckdog, I took the plunge!
-
They were at $933k a couple hours ago. Holy cow. That's a little over 15 times what they needed.
Those of you who backed it are gonna get a TON of spaceships.
-
So begins (or continues, as I have a bunch of BFG stuff) my quest to own all plastic (as well).
