Historicon? Can we do a DW tourney there?
« on: June 15, 2014, 11:59:50 pm »
I have not tracked Historicon well, I think events are still open. If so, anyone interested?

I might be able to make it for at least one of the days...which day were you thinking of meeting up?

I'm there all days, as I work with the Convention.  Let me know if there's any events.

You have time slots and play space reserved?  That's awesome.  I'm planning to attend all 3 days, although I'm not running anything this year.

I had a weird experience last year when I showed up at my reserved table at my designated time, but the play space, which was supposed to be 3 tables together was only a single narrow table because some of the components had apparently been dragged away to add to other play surfaces--so I did my best to run my game on a single 2.5' by 6' table.

I can help spread the word, etc.  I'll definitely participate as well.

Historicon is a great miniatures gaming event.  Yes, it emphasizes historical miniature wargames, but there are plenty of sci-fi, fantasy, and other miniature games represented.  Last year there was a great big game featuring pirate ships.

Lots of naval games, in fact proportionally more than what I would expect from historical gamers.  The Napoleonics crowd is represented, along with the WWII Flames of War guys, but I've gone the past 2 years and was pleasantly surprised how many age-of-sail, ironclads, and dreadnought era naval games were set up and played.  And there were alternative steampunk games as well.

What can I do to help?

Soooo, my registration got repeatedly screwed up and my reservation  did not go through.
No one is more pissed than I.
However- the event coordinator tells us we can find a spot.
Better than nothing- sigh. Do we want to proceed?
I do but it will need to ad hoc
I have terrain and two clothe/felt surfaces.
I can bring enough for two tables.
The email follows:

Mike,

We WILL have space for ad-hoc games at Historicon.  Some times are a bit tighter, spacewise, than others, though.

When you get into the convention, how 'bout swinging by the events desk (where the ticket board is) and having the staff there check the events book for table availability during your desired times?  There WILL be space available at some point or another and once you stake out some table space they'll mark it in the book so the space is yours for the specified time...

Tx - and see you next week!

- Bill

I will go back and mention Saturday/Sunday.
Friday? Friday evening.

They set up a new system to schedule games this year, I believe, and it may have some kinks to work out.

Try not to worry--we'll find some tables to play games.  There have always been tables available in previous events, it's just a matter of finding out where.  It does get packed Friday and Saturday evening, but in past years I've always noticed vacant tables in those evenings.

I actually like the idea of a "flash" DW event at Historicon.  I'm thinking I could collect a list of phone numbers for players already planning to be at the event, and we could send out a text message with the place and time, etc.

What times should we shoot for?  I'm not planning to play much this year--mostly planning just to experience the overall event and take pictures.

I will be aiming for Saturday Early afternoon. But of course it depends on what is open and when.

I'm going to try to make it up this Saturday myself, but I won't be playing as I don't have any of my stuff with me (It is all up in NH!).  I'd love to meet up with you guys, though.

I will have plenty of Blazing Sun and Prussians to loan out at the Convention, should that be an issue.

I'm local so all my stuff is easily available. I have a bunch.
All the RoF fleet, including new BG. FSA, all but new BG, but do have FSA shadow Hunter BG.
All the Russian 1.1 fleet. Double LoIS complete sets. Black wolf, eclipse, merchants and Australian naval basic set.  So if any one needs a loaner. I will also bring blue playing surfaces and terrain. I will have some print outs of the new counters as well.
I need to get some use out of this stuff!

Turns out I need to work Saturday afternoon, putting a hole in the middle of my plans for Historicon.  But I'll spend the lion's share of my weekend around the event.

And, I hate to say it, but I'm going to be missing Saturday myself, thanks to a command function I found out about yesterday :(. Unfortunately, at this point it looks like I won't be able to make it up at all.
