DWVA / Tuesday Battle Report
« on: April 18, 2012, 05:33:36 pm »
Tuesday afternoon we ended up with several local players at The Game Vault, and after Jack & I played a mission for the X-Cam (his rogue faction of Japanese beat my Imperial scouting force trying to locate his main fleet), we played a team-based, 4-player game which included a young lady who tried the game out for the first time (and she seemed to enjoy it more than my wife who finds the game even more dull than chess).

Here are some pictures from the team game:

It was at some point when I was taking pictures that another young lady asked why I was taking pictures of our game in progress.  I had to admit, at that point, that it was because I'm a absolute Dystopian Wars geek.  And then Jack's Ika moved forward in a zig-zag fashion, passed two difficult terrain checks, and then all but swallowed the KoB battleship which was trying to recapture my poor war gyro (which had been boarded and captured by a squadron of Prussian frigates--damn those Prussian frigates).

DWVA / Historicon
« on: April 16, 2012, 07:39:32 pm »
Of course, I'm planning to attend Historicon this summer since it's practically in my own back yard.  And, of course, I'm now thinking about running a demo game of Uncharted Seas or Dystopian Wars.  I've already started the registration to run an event.  Of course, I'm leaning toward running the demo games for Uncharted Seas (I have 4 painted fleets now), but I could be convinced to run DW if I had another painted fleet to borrow or another assistant....

Dystopian Wars / Use STAR cards?
« on: April 14, 2012, 05:10:13 pm »
There has been some curiosity from new players about using the STAR cards, and I hear plenty of players claim they don't like them but have never actually played a game using them.  So, I'm just wondering at some percentages here of players prefering them, indifferent, or hating them.

DWVA / DWVA Summer Event June 3rd
« on: April 14, 2012, 04:38:00 pm »
Our 3rd seasonal event is scheduled for June 3rd at The Game Vault, and I'm organizing this along more conventional tournament format as I anticipate a larger crowd than the 10 regulars which have attended the previous two events.

So everyone can begin considering force lists, here's the Maximum Force Values:

600 Naval Core (ships and air units only)
600 Armored Core (landships and air units only)
900 Naval/Armored mixed (all units allowed, Naval or Armored Core--your choice)

And I'm considering an all air force scenario....

The first 2 rounds will have strict time limits and feature the 600 point forces.
The 3rd round will feature land and sea terrain with Sturginium flares for teleporting land units between islands....

Historical Naval Games / Spanish Fury Sail!
« on: April 14, 2012, 03:37:18 pm »
I've been reading a bit about Elizabethan England lately and I'm interested in setting up a game of British and Spanish galleons blasting each other to pieces.  I want a game which has some historical setting and incorporates some sailing maneuvers but is relatively simple and fast to play.  And now I think I've found exactly what I was looking for, and free, from the Perfect Captain!

http://perfectcaptain.50megs.com/sfsail.html

The sailing templates and ship cards look great, the rules are abstract and simple enough, and (best of all) I think the new Imperial Human ship models I bought from Spartan Games is going to work perfectly on the table for this game.

DWVA X-Cam / Spring 2012 X-Cam
« on: April 13, 2012, 12:45:51 pm »
After a successful DWVA Spring Event 2012 last week I am trying to get players across the region to participate in an X-Cam over the course of the next two months, hopefully culminating in a big Control Point battle or two during our DWVA Summer Event on June 3rd at the Game Vault.

The text of the X-Cam can be found on a blog by Craig (of D6G fame):  http://mcnerdiganspub.blogspot.com/search/label/Dystopian%20Wars%20X-Cam

This campaign system is simple and allows players to play as many or as few games as possible.  Of course, playing more games allows a player to earn more campaign points which allows that player to challenge other players to bigger games, etc.  I like the casual structure of this campaign system and invite players to post reports of their games here in this thread.

Please contact me directly with any questions or suggestions or directions to additional information.

Space Naval Games / Advice for playing BFG
« on: April 13, 2012, 12:36:31 pm »
Two years ago I stepped down from years of playing "serious" historical simulations to try some miniature tabletop games, and I really enjoyed fantasy naval games but didn't quite cross into trying space games (maybe it was easier for me to accept playing with sailing ships crewed by elves before I could warm to the idea of playing with spaceships crewed by aliens).  But then last summer I bought Batteship Galaxies and realized a space game could be fun to play and then after buying Dreadfleet I realized GW could make some cool naval models.  So, I looked for information on the classic BFG and found a lot of PDF material and even some templates for folding and gluing together paper model ships!

I'm not ready to track down old BFG models on Ebay and build a proper collection... yet, but I'm interested in trying to play some games against knowledgable opponents so I can come to understand how the system works, and maybe get some new players interested in playing.  I'm not looking for advice on technical issues so much as how to approach veteran BFG players.  Specifically, I'm looking for some response to the question:  how important is it to veteran players that I play with the "official" models as opposed to papercraft or scratchbuilt models?

General Discussion / What are you reading?

Atlantic: Great Sea Battles, Heroic Discoveries, Titanic Storms, and a Vast Ocean of a Million Stories by Simon Winchester

A broad but interesting bio of the Greatest Sea on the planet, starting with the geological and ranging from the ecological to the mythological.  It has been out since 2010 (reviewed here: http://www.powells.com/blog/review-a-day/simon-winchesters-well-navigated-atlantic-by-review-a-day/ ), but I checked out an audiobook version from my local library last week and I'm enjoying the experience.

Uncharted Seas / The Uncharted Seas
« on: April 12, 2012, 06:10:58 pm »
The Uncharted Seas was my first beloved game from Spartan Games, and I remain convinced it is still the best (I think Dystopian Wars certainly features more bells, whistles, and steampipes but is not necessarily better).  New versions of the old models were released late last year, and I recently picked up a box of the new Imperial Human starter fleet.  These second generation models are very beautiful indeed, and certainly affordable (especially when compared to other naval miniatures, most of which I can't even find this side of the Atlantic).  And I'm looking forward to buying and painting even more sailing ships.

Today I noticed a post on the Spartan Games forum from Neil himself that a revised rule book, in hardcover, is on the way this month, followed by a campaign book and some new models.  I'm certainly pleased....
