Dystopian Wars / Spartan Neil on D6G episode 104
« on: June 04, 2012, 09:24:17 pm »
Just downloaded but haven't listened to it yet:  http://www.thed6generation.com/webpage/d6g-ep-104-miniature-manufacture-mulling-mechanics-emulating-timeflow

Spartan Neil is in the guest chair for the episode, and I'm sure he'll have some DW news to share with the audience.  Maybe some industry insight....

DWVA / DWVA CLUB MEMBERSHIP
« on: June 04, 2012, 09:00:01 pm »
All right, I've been thinking about using this forum to actually pull the group together to plan and enjoy even better events in the future.  I've been thinking of the concept of collecting dues for membership and then using money for special events, etc.  But I don't want to spend my time collecting dues and managing funds.  We have some very talented and creative players in our region, and I would like to build on these talents.

So, for the sake of collecting contact information all in one place, I want to create a "membership" list here with screen name (indicate if you're comfortable using your real first name online here), favored faction (and second faction, if necessary), general location, and any responsibilities and titles you're willing to assume.  Don't include phone number or address, but a link to your profile with the PM option would be helpful.  Post a reply below and I'll copy and paste into the top box and pin to the board.  I want to keep everyone's exposure to spammers and the like to a minimum, but it would be helpful to have a list of active members.  Keep in mind that new or interested players may see this thread with an interest in contacting someone for a game, so indicate if you're willing to run demo games, etc.

DWVA / PLANNING DWVA AUTUMN EVENT 2012
« on: June 04, 2012, 08:51:49 pm »
All right, I still have some more pictures to post and numbers to analyze, but I'm ready to start thinking about the next event.

I'd like to put together something of a committee to plan and organize the next event.  I'm willing to take the lead, etc. but I could definitely use help designing the format, scenarios, etc.  I think the next event could be awesome if just 2 or 3 of us really put our heads together on this.

For myself, I would really like to do a fundraising charity event, something along the lines of Foodmachine.  Taking my special effect cards into account and some suggestions by players, I like the idea of dropping the STAR cards and allowing special effects to be bought with cans of food or whatever.  You certainly won't forget about the option to purchase special effects like adding movement to a model or re-rolling a missed attack die when you have a collection of canned food on your side of the table.

Anyway, I intend to use this thread to post and discuss ideas for the next event.

Historical Naval Games / Fun for kids, too!
« on: June 02, 2012, 12:01:32 am »
I put up a link to this fun little historical naval game, and I've been thinking about writing a review, but I haven't actually played it with any kids just yet.  Each month I help my wife run a gaming event for teens at the local public library, and we've been rotating through the usual games of Carcassone, Forbidden Island, That's My Fish, Apples to Apples, RISK, Rune Age, just about any game that is fun and easy to teach and play in 90 minutes.  Anyway, we're expanding a bit into miniature games with Battleship Galaxies, and I really like some of the paper wargames I've found on the Junior General site, particularly this one recreating the naval battle on Lake Erie during the War of 1812 (hey, centennial opportunity here).  The cool thing about this game is that the materials are free (download and print PDF to put together paper ship models and the rules are included), simple to explain the rules (the illustration almost says it all), and it's a fun "hands on" sort of game that kids can get into playing (none of those charts & tables or ship movement logs from Wooden Ships & Iron Men).

The single page of rules along with link to the PDF for printing & building the ships can be found here: http://www.juniorgeneral.org/naval/erie/erie.htm

The Junior General site has a range of easy to play historical wargames with paper models and several naval games (I particularly like the Civil War ironclad game which involves designing your own ships with colored pencils, etc.), but I'll stick with posting about this one for now.

DWVA / Lodestone Campaign
« on: May 30, 2012, 06:57:38 pm »
At the Game Vault on Tuesday afternoon Billy agreed to match me in the first scenario for the new Lodestone Campaign.  I represented the Axis force with the Imperials and Billy the Allies with the FSA.

I conceded to Billy and his FSA force by turn 6.

Details for the campaign can be found on this site:

DWVA / New Campaign Ideas?
« on: May 22, 2012, 01:51:49 am »
Yes, the campaign book is coming out in June, but I just found this neat little campaign designed for DW.  There is certainly a good explanation of how to tailor a campaign to a specific group of players.

After the tournament on June 3rd I'll definitely be interested in participating in a campaign, using the new Hurricane Season book or otherwise.

Historical Naval Games / Historical Naval Blogs
« on: May 07, 2012, 05:33:05 pm »
I was searching for some naval recruiting posters from the ACW era to use as a model for a poster I'm putting together for an upcoming tabletop gaming event, and I discovered this little blog which features several contributors and focuses on the naval war during the Civil War, 150 years later:

DWVA / Next Game: GV
« on: April 26, 2012, 05:38:14 pm »
I'm planning to be at the Game Vault to play DW next Tuesday the 1st of May.

And I'm not working Sunday the 6th of May, so I'll plan to be at the GV that morning.

I've been doing a fair bit of painting this past week, including some new buildings, and I'm looking forward to more actual games.

Historical Naval Games / PC Sim
« on: April 26, 2012, 08:30:55 am »
I saw an ad for a new computer game titled Naval War: Arctic Circle.

http://www.navalwargame.com

It's definitely a modern simulation with aircraft, and it's also a Real Time game (I'm never good at playing any game in real time).  It looks like it's already out, released on the 10th.

Dystopian Wars / DW review & painting guide in The Ancible #14
« on: April 22, 2012, 08:15:01 am »
I just read an extensive review and a painting guide with good pictures of work on KoB models in the March issue of The Ancible (#14):

http://www.the-ancible.com/

Even though it features mostly content related to Spartan Games (and DW art on the cover), I can't post a link on the new Spartan forum.  But I can post the link here!

The magazine is free to download in PDF and worth checking out.
