Uncharted Seas / House Rules for Uncharted Seas
« on: January 09, 2013, 11:17:36 am »
So, I'm planning a demo game of UCS next month, in February, and I'm working on incorporating some rules for ground units (borrowed from Dystopian Wars).  I'm also dreaming up a campaign which departs from the UCS setting and puts the system into an alternate version of the 17th century Caribbean.  Why not match Elven longbowmen against Dwarven musketeers while ships bombard coastal forts and Orcish raiding fleets put raiders ashore to burn down coastal villages?  I'm aiming to capture the integrated system of DW to include both naval and ground operations while reflecting the fantasy setting of a place and time which is different from the coal-smoke shrouded iron stacks of the steampunk genre.

General Discussion / Wargaming Recon Podcast
« on: December 28, 2012, 11:32:45 pm »
I just discovered this podcast last night, although it has been around for a few years and they're up to episode 84, and I'm surprised I hadn't come across it before.  Today I listened to an interview with Neil Shuck (Meeples & Miniatures podcast) and a fair list of the 5 reasons you should (or shouldn't) shop at your FLGS.

http://wargamingforums.com/

The host is a big fan of Axis & Allies: War at Sea along with American Revolution wargaming, so I'm already a fan of the show based on that.  But the production is good and the show stays on track--it's not just three guys in a basement laughing and occasionally talking about games they like to play.

General Discussion / Naval History Podcasts

I just discovered this resource of weekly podcasts with a historical theme, and I just listened to this particular lecture which has reinforced my enthusiasm for all age-of-sail Napoleonic-era fiction and non-fiction alike:

A good recording of a lecture by Sam Willis about the British navy around the time of the Napoleonic wars.

If the above link doesn't work, check out the 9 August 2012 episode on the page: http://www.historyextra.com/podcasts

Some of the guys talk about meeting in a sports bar to play games of DW, and I'm really interested to see this one of these nights.  I hear about gamers in the U.K. playing in pubs, but I've never seen it here in the States.  I have actually met and played DW on conveniently 4x4 foot tables in a local bakery, and it works well for a Saturday afternoon game where I can drink coffee and the place is relatively deserted, but I can't quite imagine tabletop games (especially DW) in an American sports bar.  I've got to see it to believe it!

DWVA X-Cam / Amaterasu Division

North Pacific Fleet/Amaterasu Division/Sword Army/Empire of the Blazing Sun

"Today we took delivery of our first squadron of Tetsubo small flyers.  They still need to be painted in the Division Colors, and the crews need time to learn the controls in the air around our floating naval base, but the Kaigun Shoshol expects they will be ready for duty by the end of the week and has already formed plans to dispatch an All Air Fleet to run reconnaissance to the southeast of our current location where Covenant ships have been suspected to be operating in open seas and around, what the Americans call, Johnston Atoll.

"Of course, we still need to observe the formal christening ceremony, and as soon as the paint is dry the trio of Tetsubo flyers will receive the blessing of the Sun Goddess by our official Shinto priest.  I must remember to have our fleet procurement officer to acquire an albatross for the blood necessary for the event."

BattleFleet Gothic VA / A New Era Begins
« on: November 05, 2012, 06:38:22 pm »
All right, just getting started here.  I have a lot of reading to do--I really know almost nothing about the 40K universe, but the promise of a campaign starting, even with just three of us to begin, has me pulling out the old PDFs I downloaded almost a year ago and getting some models painted.

Edit:
I like the style of the Eldar forces in 40K, and reading about Eldar pirate fleets had me wondering what their ships looked like... and then I found the BFG wiki:  http://battlefleet-gothic.wikia.com/wiki/Battlefleet_Gothic_Wiki

Anyway, now I'm thinking about trying to put together a fleet of Eldar ships.  It seems some of my Elven sailing ships from Uncharted Seas might suit the purpose on flight stands, etc.

DWVA X-Cam / Autumn 2012 X-Cam
« on: November 01, 2012, 07:42:09 pm »
After the DWVA Autumn Event last week I am trying to get players across the region to participate in an X-Cam over the course of the next three months, hopefully culminating in a big Control Point battle or two during our DWVA Winter Event in January, 2013.

The text of the X-Cam can be found on a blog by Craig (of D6G fame):  http://mcnerdiganspub.blogspot.com/search/label/Dystopian%20Wars%20X-Cam
Or on the D6G website:  http://www.thed6generation.com//dystopian-war-s-x-cam

This campaign system is simple and allows players to play as many or as few games as possible.  Of course, playing more games allows a player to earn more campaign points which allows that player to challenge other players to bigger games, etc.  I like the casual structure of this campaign system and invite players to post reports of their games here in this thread, or start new threads featuring the exploits of their chosen nations.

Please contact me directly with any questions or suggestions or directions to additional information.

Register with your name and nation in the registration thread, or send me a PM.  Report battle scores by posting or by sending a PM.

Dystopian Wars / Dystopian Legions Battle Report

With pictures, here:

Dystopian Legions Battle Report

I see black, blue, and red dice in those pictures, leading me to believe the system is similar to that seen in Planetfall for Firestorm Invasion!
