Anyone else see this on Table Top Gaming news? It was designed for use with DW, and looks like it is pretty cool:

Modeling Q&A / Landing Craft for DW
« on: April 28, 2012, 04:08:45 pm »
This is a re-post of a tutorial I posted a while back. Thought I would add it here in case any of you might find it useful ;).

So, I recently decided to run a mini DW campaign for my game group. I wanted to include land, air, and sea components into each of the games. This mean that I had to have some way for the players to transport their land forces to the beach, but Spartan has yet to release (or even announce) official landing craft for the game. So, I decided to make my own! I had a few design criteria I wanted to incorporate:

1. A carrying capacity of at least 2 medium tanks or 3 small tank tokens.
2. Operating bow ramps (for the "cool" factor).
3. A simple design for mass production.

So, below is what I came up with:

First I started with a rectangle of styrene, 1.5" by 4":

As you can see, this is large enough to hold the two tanks I wanted to carry, while still leaving room at the back for a small supersturcture that would notionally house the engines and crew quarters:

Next, I took some 1/16" square styrene and lined the edges of the base plate, in order to provide bracing to the vertical side walls of the hull:

Once this was done, I fashioned the two sides of the hull from 1/2" strips of styrene sheet, with an angle cut into the bow end. I attached one of the sides:

Next, I started working on the door. The hinges for the door consist of styrene tubing and wire from a straightened paper clip. The first step was to attach a short piece of tube to the bow of the lander, on the same side as the one the wall was glued to above:

Next, I glued a longer length of tubing to the piece of sheet stock that will form the bow ramp:

Here are all the components for the door hinge, right before assembly. I found the trick is to make sure the piece on the boat and the piece on the door have had a little time to dry. I then inserted the wire into the piece of tubing on the door, slid it onto the piece of tubing on the lander, and then slipped the short piece of tubing onto the opposite end of the wire. I then glued that short piece to the hull. Once the other side of the lander is glued on, there is no way for the wire to slip out:

Here is  a view of the completed hinge:

At the aft end, two pieces of styrene sheet were used to block off the cargo compartment and the stern of the lander. Another piece was added on top to completely box this area in:

Here is a look at the finished landing craft. The superstructure is a simple box made from styrene, while the smoke stack is a short piece of larger diameter styrene tube. The bow ramp has been equipped with a magnetic closure by gluing a rare earth magnet to the side of the hull and a short piece of paperclip wire to the edge of the ramp:

Overall, these landers satisfied all of my initial requirements. They certainly proved to be very useful in the first game of the campaign: Here is a group of three that have just disgorged their cargoes onto a beach:

Space Naval Games / Firestorm Armada: Where do we go from here?
« on: April 16, 2012, 07:15:24 pm »
So, I must admit I really like Firestorm Armada ;). It was my introduction to Spartan Games, and I started playing it after my BFG group in San Diego decided to jump ship for it. The only problem is, I have had very little subsequent success spreading interest in the game. I think that part of this is because of the big drought in new model releases for much of last year, which was finally broken by the release of the Dreadnoughts. However, I think that a new version of the rules, one that includes all of the MARs for the game and the various other PDF updates, is desperately needed. What other things do you guys think it will take to get the game back on track, if it can be?

General Discussion / Adepticon
« on: April 16, 2012, 06:42:54 pm »
So, I'm heading out to Adepticon next weekend. I'm really psyched about the event! While it is mainly a 40k event, other games like War Machine and Flames of War have been making in-roads. As far as naval gaming goes, there are going to be some Leviathans demos, and there will be a BFG tourney on Sunday (which I will not be able to compete in due to other obligations!). I'm also going to see what I can do about stirring the pot with some Dystopian Wars demos  ;).

The Showcase / DW Rhine-class Fleet Carrier
« on: April 15, 2012, 02:16:15 pm »
Here is my Prussian naval carrier. It is a very interesting low-slung design. I've taken to thinking of it as the Doom Canoe!  ;D This is the first DW model I've applied decals to, and I'm happy with how it looks. I'll have to put them on more of my fleet, I think. Here are some pics:

Announcements / Announcing the Community Board
« on: April 13, 2012, 01:02:29 pm »
I've created a new sub-forum where gaming clubs can have their own space for club-specific discussion and event planning. Want to have one for your own club? Here is how:

1. Get at least 3 club members to join the forum.
2. Have a point of contact PM me with the names of the club members, and let me know what you want your subforum to be called, along with any child boards you desire.
3. I will then set up your board per the message, with the Point of contact having mod powers over that board.

In the future, I may adjust the number of members requires. Also, boards that see no posting for an extended period of time might be subject to deletion. This will not happen unit after I've failed to make contact with the club POC, though.

Dystopian Wars / Ideas for other subforums...
« on: April 12, 2012, 02:12:52 pm »
So, right now the DW section is limited to a General and a tactics section. I was wondering if anyone saw a need for other subforums? A battle report one perhaps? I'm also toying with the idea of making a child board for the tactics section that is expressly for list discussion.

Announcements / Looking for Pictures and Artwork
« on: April 10, 2012, 04:26:28 pm »
Calling all of you digital artists photographers out there! I am pretty unskilled when it comes to graphics programs, so if anyone has a little time to make a Man Battlestations banner graphic, etc I would greatly appreciate the help! Likewise, if any of you have some cool naval war gaming pictures they would like to see used on the site somewhere, please let me know. I could definitely use pictures from various games to include in the slideshow on the main page!

I will be hosing a DW night at Eagle & Empire in Alexandria, VA again this Friday, 13 April. We will be starting at around 5:30 pm. Game format is open, so we can do pick-up matches or team games as appropriate. Right now, I know of at least 5 people who will be there (including me!). The more the merrier!

Find a Game! / How to Post an Event
« on: April 08, 2012, 04:05:43 pm »
In order for interested players to find your event, you will need to answer the questions of Who, What, Where, and When. Thus, I recommend that in your thread title you list the game/event, followed by the location, followed by the date the event will be held. For example:

Dystopian Wars, Alexandria VA, 13 April

The rest of the information, such as point level, start time, exact location, etc would then go into to the message body. I'm hoping that sticking to a common format will make it easier for users to glance through the game listing to find one that interests them!
