Dystopian Wars / Been out of the game for a while - catch me up?
« on: June 21, 2017, 04:03:17 pm »
So somehow, I missed this whole DW Kickstarter thing!

Can someone explain to me what the League of Crimson is? Also, what's the deal with the Egyptian fleet - what are they all about?

Space Naval Games / Dropfleet Commander - Pics from GenCon!
« on: July 31, 2015, 11:42:15 am »
The pics and info have been coming in from GenCon!  Pictures available here:
https://www.facebook.com/dzcommenter/photos_stream

Here are a few of my favorites (attached).

Each "cruiser" sprue for each race (UCM, Scourge) is said to have all the pieces to make one of 5 or 6 variants per cruiser.  PHR and Shaltari models are on their way.  Targeting models is based around that model's energy signature, so moving, firing, or Shaltari shields make the vessel easier to target.  There will be a Kickstarter in October, focused on the starter box(es) (maybe 2-player UCM vs Scourge?), with a firm delivery deadline in April.

I'll put up a few more pictures in the next post.

Am I just mis-remembering, or did there use to be buttons on the forum homepage that linked to the MBS blog?

Could we get those back?  :)

Firestorm Armada / Terran Alliance Cruisers - Development
« on: May 05, 2015, 08:52:39 pm »
Hey guys!  So a year ago not long after FS:A 2.0 was released, I was really into Terran Cruisers and the hardpoint upgrades in the new fleet list.  I ended up writing a little article about it and submitting it to a fan-led FS:A magazine that....never happened, I guess.  I thought I would put it up here for you guys to consider!

Mostly, for me, this was just a thought experiment about ship development and weapons R&D in the Alliance.  Still, I hope you enjoy reading it, and feel free to leave any comments below.

Stumbled on this one:

Anyone going in on it?  The pledge levels jump up quite quickly, but I'm considering it.

BANG / CaptainCon! July 17-19, 2015, Taunton, MA
« on: April 20, 2015, 11:25:59 pm »
Passing this along:

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/neprivateers/captaincon-2015

"CaptainCon 2015 will take place Friday, July 17 through Sunday, July 19 in Taunton, Massachusetts - midway between Boston and the Rhode Island border.  Last year was a massive success thanks to our Kickstarter backers and all the people who attended, so we've gotten ourselves a bigger pirate ship with over 9,000 square feet"

I am not yet sure if I can make it, but I know a couple of people looking to start tournaments, including for FS:A!

Hey everyone - a good while ago there was a battle report of my testing some "mercenary or pirate" ships against Ruckdog's Prussians.  A lot has happened in the interim, but just recently I have finally gotten around to making 2.0 rules for the force (AND painting up the first wave of ships!).  I even finished mocking up a Force Guide in the style of the official Spartan ones.

I would like your help and opinions about the ships and aeroplanes, rules, points, and force guide!

You can find the force guide for download here:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B_gsuBDmdvmLeTltUklGMm1aejg/edit?usp=sharing

You can find pictures of three of the ship classes all painted up on my blog here:

Any thoughts, c&c, ideas, or proof reading are welcome!

(P.S. Yes, you can find the original playtest drafts for this list from a good long while ago in this same forum...)

The Showcase / FSA Sorylians/Terran Fleet Finished!
« on: February 08, 2014, 07:53:02 pm »
Hey everyone, I just finished my Alliance of Kurak fleet today!  I play my first games of FSA tomorrow, so I rushed these out (I hate playing with unpainted anything).  I'll be posting about the games tomorrow or this week, as well.  But here are the models:

I took quite a few pictures and threw them on the blog.

General Discussion / Anybody know what this camo is?
« on: October 20, 2013, 07:25:29 pm »
Hey - anyone know what this camo pattern is?

http://i1.ytimg.com/vi/C2NxwHIDTUA/maxresdefault.jpg

I saw it in the 1997 movie The Peacemaker (where this image is from), but I think it was also on some old Micro Machines Military vehicles.

Any help or advice on how to find out the name or origin?

Here's a Micro Machine Abrams done in a similar/the same style:

General Discussion / Report your progress!
« on: May 18, 2013, 10:25:16 am »
Man, the forum has been really dead since the end of the painting contest - the opposite of the intention of the contest, I imagine!  What has everyone been up to in the last few weeks?

I admit I don't have much to report wargaming-wise, either.  I graduated from my master's program, started new employment, got a new gym membership etc. etc.  Busy times.  Hopefully soon I will finish writing up the results of my online survey about tabletop wargamers and post that online.

For Dystopian Wars, I have built some custom vessels that I intend as a mercenary fleet.  Six "pocket cruisers" and three "super destroyers," medium class vessels a little less expensive and less powerful than regular cruisers.  Painting soon, perhaps!

I have been enjoying the Pacific Cyclone supplement for DW that's been released on Spartan's website over the past few weeks.  13 PDFs so far (including the Italian fleet list and such).  If you haven't yet, I encourage you to check it out!  I hope they release the rules for the Free Australians for it soon.

I also finally got around to reading Armored Clash, and I think the rules are pretty cool - now I need to finish a force for it!

What have you been working on?  What have you accomplished?   :)

(I am also going to post this on the Spartan forum - sorry for any overlap!  But I hope you guys enjoy looking at it and will offer any feedback!)

So for the last few weeks I've had pirates/mercenaries/independent companies for DW on the brain.  I have been working on building two classes for an independent mercenary or pirate fleet, but while these are works in progress I thought I would get opinions and suggestions on the rules for such models.

My thinking is this: large capital vessels would be extremely rare - or simply non-existant - for these non-state forces.  Such fleets would largely be limited to salvaging (or perhaps prizing) other small and medium class ships and refitting, or building off of, them.  With this in mind, I imagined this independent fleet as being based around cruiser-equivalents.

Ship Idea #1: a pirate "pocket cruiser" - 1 large turret, somewhat rugged (but vulnerable to major ordnance), significant compliment of assault personnel.

"Pocket Cruiser"
Squadrons of 2 to 4;  45 points each, Medium class
DR/CR    HP    AP  AA  CC  RR
  4 / 5       3       5    2     1     0
Mv: 8", 2" minimum
Main Turret (P):  6 / 5 / 2 / -  (270
