Misc. Naval Games / Re: Supersized Dreadfleet
« on: September 29, 2022, 01:12:14 pm »
Yikes!  I am usually worried about models when leaning over the table, I would not want to risk my balance when walking around any of them...

Did you have any surprises on the time / turns playing scaled up; was it about the same length of time as standard boxed Dreadfleet or did it end up longer in the bigger format?

It ran a little longer than expected, but I attribute that mostly to everyone having a beer or three during the course of the game as well as multiple players per side. And, despite the alcohol consumption, no ships were trod upon during play.

Last month at the NOVA Open in Virginia I ran a Dreadfleet game at 6:1 scale using the model ships we had built years earlier for the Age of Sigmar narrative events. I can't remember how to post pictures directly into a forum post, so I'll just link to the respective blog post for anyone interested.

Space Naval Games / Re: Finally playing BFG

I'm keen on the Eldar and Dark Eldar ships, especially considering their orientation to the nearest sun mechanic reminiscent of age-of-sail games. The Imperial and Chaos ships feel more thematic to pre-dreadnought naval action.

I'm learning plenty about the 40K lore through reading BFG documents though! Space marines never interested me, but I've been watching videos about the Imperial Navy and the Inquisition like taking my daily ration of grog.

I've been out of the hobby for several years now, taking a sabbatical to focus on work and school and transitioning to a new career, but in recent months I've made time again for tabletop gaming and even ran a supersized game of Dreadfleet at the NOVA Open convention a few weeks ago.

I've reconnected with some local gamers and I may be to blame for some consensus to pull together and play some BattleFleet Gothic at our FLGS. Thanks to @ruckdog I've already been thoroughly convinced this game is worth playing even though by the time I started this hobby around ten years ago it was already fading away and I never actually played it.

But I'm looking over rules again and pulling together a fleet to play in a few weeks with some old friends I haven't seen in years, and I'll post hobby updates and fleet battle pics to this thread in the coming weeks.

Uncharted Seas / Re: Official US Update From Spartan Games

It was sad to read Ruckdog's hope that Spartan revive the Uncharted Seas at some point, written more than a year ago.

But Warcradle dangles hope? I'm not sure how they will fit it in with Wild West Exodus. Something new?

I am hoping to play anything over the next year, but hopefully some Age of Sail stuff, as I get ready to playtest my Napoleonic rules I have been working  on.  Looking for volunteers....  8)

If they're fast to play, I'm looking for some fleet rules to use with my Sails of Glory ships! Sails of Glory is a great game with only a couple ships per player, but too unwieldy for big fleet battles.  ;)

I remember Landlubber playing some Battlestar Galatica games at Historicon a few years back. And I remember nearly buying some vipers at a booth in the vendor's hall. But now with a new computer game coming out based on BSG and realizing that I'm just not all that much of a Star Wars fan, I want to put together a BSG version of X-Wing. My big goal for 2018.

Oh, and also set up at least one big Age of Nelson game with customized fast-play rules and all the Sails of Glory models I bought at a steep discount in 2017.  ;)

Also, planning an even bigger Ships of Renown event at NOVA Open next September!

General Discussion / Re: What are you reading?
« on: December 07, 2017, 10:08:41 pm »
I'm embarrassed to admit I finally started reading the Honor Harrington series this past year. So far, I only finished On Basilisk Station. Rekindles a lot of the excitement I remember when reading the Horatio Hornblower series in high school. It's ironic because I played the Saganami Island Tactical Simulator game about 6-7 years ago!

But I'm about to start reading In the Heart of the Sea by Nathaniel Philbrick after I finish his book about George Washington. I've read Melville's novel Moby Dick twice in my life, but I have read a few times about how it's a novel best appreciated by middle-aged readers, so that now I'm officially "middle-aged" I'm preparing to read it again. ;p

Uncharted Seas / Re: QRS for Uncharted Seas

Yes, there was a double-sided sheet that was larger than the book and ended up bent along the edges because of that!

It might take me a while, but I'm going to track that down and scan to share. ;)

Historical Naval Games / Re: Sails of Glory forever!

Yeah, with the sad news about Spartan I feel inclined to return from merely lurking! 😉

Far too many ships for a short game of Sails of Glory, but there are plenty of other age of sail rulesets to use with these.

Uncharted Seas is still the best fantasy naval tabletop game!

DWVA / Re: Spartan event at NOVA Open 2016
« on: September 24, 2015, 11:33:56 pm »
I'm aiming to organize a more competitive tournament event. A group of guys ran demo games at NOVA this year, but I was hoping to set up a more conventional minis event next year in line with what they do with 40K, WarmaHordes, X-Wing, etc.

So, really, I'm trying to figure out which will draw the largest group of players interested in spending 2-3 days playing their favorite Spartan Game in a competitive event.

I'm planning to run a Spartan Games competitive event at NOVA Open 2016, but I need help deciding which game to commit to running. I'm trying to gauge what might draw the most players from the NoVA area as well as possibly farther away, and new players which don't otherwise attend NOVA Open for 40K, Warmachine, or other events.

NOVA Open is a tabletop gaming convention every Labor Day weekend in Arlington, VA. We had over 1,000 attendees this year. And games included 40K, WarmaHordes, Infinity, Malifaux, X-Wing, Hobbit, Warhammer Age of Sigmar, along with demo games which included some Spartan Games this year.

I have a sponsor for a Spartan Games event next year, and after being involved with this year's con I have a good idea what to plan for next year. The NOVA Open staff are great and run a fantastic grass roots sort of gaming event.

I just need to figure out what game to commit to running next year!

Roll Call / Re: New DW Player in Northern Virginia

I'm going to be at NOVA Open this weekend as well, Bogo. Even though I picked up a box of HALO Fleet Battles, I'm going to check out the demo games going on all weekend.

I'll be in the fantasy hall helping run the Age of Sigmar events. NOVA Open will be the closing of my involvement with Warhammer for a while, so I should have more time to get in some classic Spartan games along with the new fleet battles game. It's about time to plan a big event at the Game Vault in Fredericksburg.
