Title: Spartan Games seems to be down this morning
Post by: Pendrake on July 29, 2012, 11:42:11 am
SG announced they would have a 24 hour outage. The stated date was for the 26th [?] but the outage seems to be in effect today [29th].  :-\

Should I have posted this in the news section?

Well, we can always post here when the Spartan forum is down.  Fortunately it's back up and running.  I remember when it went down last time and was gone for what seemed like a very long time.  In fact, the loss of the old Spartan forum was what got us talking about starting this forum.

Hee hee, yeah. Of course, not more than a day or two after we finally decided to start this forum, Spartan announced their new one  ;).

Spartan has mysteriously and suddenly (I saw no announcement?) gone offline ... again.

About 24 hours ago, the website, the blog, and forum were down. (I didn't check the store.) Presently the forum is more-or-less claiming to be in dry-dock.

Well, hopefully it won't be an entirely new forum whenever they come back online...

The shop is working. I checked that.

SPARTAN GAMES COMMUNITY OFFLINE

We are currently performing some necessary improvements and upgrades.

We thank you for your patience, and will aim to have the Community back online as soon as possible.

This is really similar to what they said the last time their forum went ++POOF++ without warning.  :-X

Sure hope they can recover it.  A lot of people put a lot of pics and explanations on the forum, and it's a good resource for obscure rules questions.  Wonder if people will want to recreate all that.

I think it's because I posted the topic about my wargamers survey in every major subforum there, whoops!   ;)

Ok, not really, but there were a lot of good discussions going on when it went down - hope they get it up without losing the topics or pictures, as Landlubber mentioned!

There were major contributors to that first forum that didn't bother to return.

Most of my pictures and whatnot were just linked from photobucket or somewhere, so not lost, but it was nice to have DW related material from other people all in one place.

It is almost like they hit a certain amount of server space and --- crunch it all falls apart. And there is no backup[??]

Or, they just have the worst, and I mean world-class worst, IT department that ever cobbled a forum together.

Or, is it when the amount of postings that request rule clarifications or critique their products in some way rises to some ill-defined but  unacceptable volume that somebody at Spartan just pulls the plug[??] ++REALLY HOPE THAT IS UNFOUNDED++

A related thought: on the second iteration of their forum I had to wonder if there were some shills in the crowd ... "VonKlinkerhoffen" comes to mind.

I never thought about that, but I do remember the member with that name.  I just remember thinking that some people on that forum--him included--had a lot of time and money on their hands to have that many models and have them painted so well.

I believe it's a matter of a company which has outgrown certain resources.  Looking at the credits in the DW rulebook, it looks like maybe two dozen people work for Spartan Games, and that includes the guys on the production line.  I really don't think they have an "IT department" just one or two responsible for the forum and website along with marketing, customer service, etc.  I imagine something along the lines of a big warehouse with moulding machines, storage, a shipping department, and a little break room and office area where everyone can meet in the conference room for company meetings.  Everyone on the Spartan forum complains about the lack of responses or posts from official Spartan members, but I think they only have maybe 2 guys on the payroll for that sort of thing... and they are also responsible for other business matters.  Take, for example, that they don't have any credits for copy editors--there are reasons the rule books are not easy to follow!

Anyway, it seems that when the Spartan forum goes down for a few days our traffic here on ManBattlestations.com increases significantly.

Edit:  There is no indication on the main Spartan site that the community is down or expected to be back.  No blog post, no nothing.  Maybe it crashed once again....

I've seen posts and topics deleted on the Spartan forum, and I've received a direct message about a particular post I made at one point, but I don't think they were so overwhelmed with rule questions and criticisms that they just decided to pull the plug.

I've said for some time, and I stand by my position, that Spartan Games produces a range of good models for affordable prices.  I even use their models with other game systems.  Good models for good prices.  Some players want more precise rule systems or more online support, but I'm happy with what they provide for the prices they ask (and when their forum is down, I'm happy to hang out on ManBattlestations.com).

I like your happier explanations. [...thinking happy thoughts, thinking happy thoughts...] Maybe Black Friday orders and restock requests slammed them so hard they needed more server space to keep product moving and something had to be off-loaded to backup for awhile ... let's hope it was that.

I believe it's a matter of a company which has outgrown certain resources.

Meanwhile: I have dredged up some threads out of Google Cached copies. Got the Island Maps thread and the Timeline thread.

I have been saving stuff from others as well, I went after some ship naming threads today. If you have suggestions for items to send the dredge and salvage divers after I'm all ears.

Day 8:  Still no contact.  Perhaps the rumors of invaders from Mars where true.  ???

Very annoying.  Their store is up and running but no information is given about when (if?) the forum will be back.

How many days elapsed from the death of the first forum (http://forum.spartangames.co.uk/smf/index.php) until the second forum was built on its ashes?

Has anyone here ordered anything from the Spartan games online store?  The store appears to be online, but are they running?  I guess they posted those two blogs about the holiday specials, but has there been any other activity?

I have not ordered anything recently. I wish they had an offer up that would allow me to order the Templates --- but I have both campaign books already and the terrain does not appeal so much.

You don't suppose [?] Spartan got caught in some cyber-crossfire:

I can't remember if the Spartan store used PayPal...

They're back!  :) 8)

Looks like it went back up between 0900 and 0930 GMT today. Not much in the way of explanation or announcement of upgrades. All I find is this thread in the Firestorm section (http://community.spartangames.co.uk/index.php?/topic/4029-wb-sg-glad-the-community-is-back-online/).

[Early New Year's Resolution: spend more forum time here -- not as much there.]

Edit: The final post before it went down (http://community.spartangames.co.uk/index.php?/topic/4015-prussian-minelayer-fleet/#entry58629) was about Danish Minelayers.

When Spartan got their forum back up there were problems in the Gallery section. It looks like they got that working now. However, making a new post to the forum is either not working at all or is crippled.

Since this last episode I really haven't spent much time at all on the Spartan forum, and I haven't tried posting much--I think I've made one post in the past week about the fact that the DL products seem to have bar codes on them (my FLGS always needs to enter product numbers into their computer manually when I purchase Spartan products).  Of course, I'm STILL waiting for my special order for Storm of Steel and my DL starter box to arrive at my store....

Edit:  Just tried to post a reply this evening on the Spartan forum, wrote a bit, but then when I hit "reply" I received a strange window informing me the post was empty!  I even copied and pasted my text into a new reply attempt on a refreshed page, but no success....

This is the kind of thing I was running into. I even tried two different machines (and  different browsers).

Very strange...still, it's good to see the official forums are back up. As much as I like having a bit more traffic around here, I think it is inescapable (at the moment anyway! ;) ) that the official forums are vital resources for players.

Ah, I think it's because you've actually been playing games lately!  I haven't played in several weeks (busy with work), so of course it's not working for me!

On the Spartan Forum - ever since the day they restored the gallery to functional order the post editor does not work in the Chrome browser.  :-X  I see all the buttons and drop downs but they are greyed out and unresponsive.

Bummer...browser compatibility seems to be a major issue nowadays. The only way I got around it was to use a very simple site design.

Ship's Log: Mar 21

:( The Spartan Forum is drydocked again. Not to worry the sign says...

...Reaper Minis uses the same style forum software but seems to have way less hassle. (Maybe Reaper's IT wizard, Kit Pierce, is just that good.)

The inspiration for starting ManBattlestations.com last year was due to an extended absence of the Spartan Games forum.

Well, we're still here, and we can talk about naval models or rules from any company, etc.

I had noticed the forums was locked to new registrants.  From what I've seen it's happened often.
Have they ever said why?  Games Workshop doing DoS attacks using the warp? ;)

Ha ha yeah maybe.

No, I don't know - but I do know some posts and pictures uploaded to galleries have been lost apparently (mine...).

A few more days and it'll probably be ok, right?  Right?!

I know I was disappointed to find the boards locked.  It's a real kick in the bum when you get new miniatures from a new games system and see the lack of support for'em.
The first time even checking the game out and the Spartan shop was down as well, went to Amazon...
No worries there, found MadDrB, his EotBS Battleship and a link to here.
