Reports from Torchlight Campaign
« on: October 08, 2014, 08:34:46 pm »
Albatrosses Haven:

Midway through the Mediterranean, situated between Tunisia and Sicily lays a large island airfield. Panatelleria, an odd plateau of lush foliage and surrounded by rocky outcroppings of the same wilderness. The main island itself hidden under massive cloaking generators. Obscuring it from sight by even the most adept reconnaissance aircraft. This central island has held the line between Grand Coalition powers and those of the Imperial Bond in recent months. Yet after seizing control of the Gibraltar straight, Grand Coalition forces look to take all of North Africa. Supporting land forces and providing the supply lines needed to advance against the enemy fortifications within. Essentially creating a second naval front against Prussian and Italian forces in the region. Though the Prussian military was in charge of the island, Ottoman forces were the main operators of day to day tasks running Panatelleria. A tactic Prussian leadership held in order to calm tension with the Italians, while assisting to help secure Ottoman support. Believing that if the more dominant element of the fragile pack held office the other could be tamed. However the Prussian protectors of this island have been cut off from all reinforcements, by the ever encroaching Federated States and Britannia. What they did not see coming was an Ottoman coup.

Ottoman separatist, in collusion with British spies, shut down the protective generators around the island with a massive bang. Using sterginiumite explosives, developed for high yield light weight covert action, the cloaking devices let off a massive pulse upon eruption. Shockwaves and a distinct sound of destruction blasted out miles around. Moving quickly to arrest and detain the military forces based there, units of specialized Britanian naval legions set off beacons alerting the naval fleets offshore of Panatelleria's true location. Likewise, during the incursion they were not able to stop the emergency dispatches to local Imperial navies. French and Italian forces turned their bows to reach the island and resecure the vital choke point...

A large squadron of Italian Fortuna's, cruising at altitude above a thick layer of cloud cover, had already been en route to Pan for staging when they received the alert from the island. Increasing to attack speed while descending through the overcast, each bomber's crews trained their weapons to the fore arc. Ready to annihilate whatever target appeared through the overcast. Something that a Federated States Battle Cruiser had no awareness of, as it raced to unload a compliment of marines onto the southern tip of the island, under the speed provided by it's workhorse kinetic generator. Eyeing the plump target in prime torpedo range, the Fortuna's dropped pinpoint accurate ordinance into the sea. Before the Annapolis Class could react, it's bow was thrust up as the impact delivered a critical explosion. Metal and crew were thrown from the vessel with incredible force. Dazed, the men left on deck grasped to the hull. Only to look out on the skyline and see a massive French Vuban take shape from what had appeared to be low level clouds. Almost as instantaneously as it appeared flashes from her barrels signaled another crushing hit to the already disarrayed ship. The Annapolis fired wildly missing targets as leadership failed to rally from the assault. A second wave of Fortuna, bemused by the weak showing of the FSA vessel, unleashed a flood of torpedoes to end the battle cruisers time on the surface. Cheers rung out through the radios of the bombers. Had this been the feared force that had sailed so hard to reach them. If so this war would be quickly won.

However reactions from the Grand Coalition came swiftly there after. Three flying assault robots from the FSA thrusted forward and centered above Pan. Situated directly in front of the Italian bombers, advanced targeting systems on board the John Henry Robots locked on the enemies they were built to engage. Spreading heavy damage across the squadron with precision and speed.

To the north of the island, Ottoman Fettah Class Cruisers eyed a squad of Italian light cruisers. Bellows from high powered turrets ripped through the air as round after round struck home. Explosions of the corrosive shells, splitting the sleek lead Gladius in two. While long range broadsides allowed the Ottomans to claim an Cinquedea Frigate. The momentum not being lost on a squad of Ottoman Separatist Destroyers, who's coordinated attacks lead to the loss of another Gladius and Frigate combination.

With first kills recorded and the fight well under way, the sky's to the south of Pan came alive as massive air forces launched into full engagement. Speedy and deadly French Interceptor planes advanced from well south to target the John Henry's. While Lee Class Scout ships moved to cover the hole left by the sunken FSA Battle Cruiser. Smaller naval vessels exchanged blows between the French and Federated States in the open waters. Each looking to make a move to flank the opposing force, yet neither able to decidedly make way.

The northern engagement beginning to suffer from the the same stalemate in advance at stake, with the destruction of the entire Ottoman Arci by combined Italian small weapons, sophisticated generators whirled to life onboard the OE-S Kanuni Dreadnought. Spinning and humming, with raw power the weather manipulating mechanisms true effect began to take form right before the Italian navy. Churning waves and darkening clouds created a barrier both impassable to the light vessels, and hindered the site of the incoming rounds from a distant Affondatore Assault Carrier. Allowing for crucial time to regroup to OE-S forces.

Italian commanders knew well of this tactic. Having shared lines and battle plans with the once ally only weeks before. Expert Ussicore swift boat pilots maneuver gaps in the choppy sea. Disappearing and reappearing in the waves, before abruptly surrounding the lead Fettah. Point blank torpedo fire detonated directly underneath the skimming cruiser. Blowing the semi flight mechanisms from their moorings.

French Armored Toulon Cruisers having until now been holding back, content to analyze the battlefield under the Vuban's cover, positioned themselves near Pans docks. From the shores of  the main island, sailors from the doomed Annapolis were again witness to the Imperial Bond's incredible force. Steam began to rise from the bows of the Tulon's as the deadly heat lances warmed and glowed hotter and hotter, before three beams of intense heat shot forward striking an FSA Scoutship. Flash fires turned the insides of the ship white. Exciting the gases in the envelope enough to expand the steel framework beyond capacity. In mere seconds after being struck the Lee popped like fire filled ballon. Lighting the darkening sky while shredding armor on the nearest companion skyship, and erasing a wing of support aircraft nearby.

Identical devastation occurred on the northern front, with Italian Ussicore's setting ablaze an OE-S cruiser. Followed by the mutual destruction of the last Fettah by the astounding gunpower  of a reformed unit of LoIS frigates and corvettes. With the edge being lost, this last dash assault looked to bring the situation back under control for the quickly depleted Italian force.

Great report. But did the game end there? I take it the Grand Coalition retreated?
I like the mix of units.

Hey there! Been pretty swamped lately so haven't had a chance to write up the ending. Was able to get in a follow up game a week ago, but the notes on that are with another player. That said the painting station is set back up and there should be time for a final write up soon!

Also, I believe we are going to be pushing to get at least a monthly game going. More to come!

Teetering on the edge of losing the assault, the American repair ship pulled aside the John Henry's. Engineers leapt from ports alongside the New Orleans, onto the backs of the robots, quickly assisting in the near full repair to the behemoths. Additional troops on board the airship repelled down onto Panatelleria to aide in the specialized ground assault. Above them, the ship they called home, roared away with rocket fire and ack ack routing the Italian Fortuna in front of them. While terrifying gatling broadsides rocked a squad of French Toulons.

Victory shouts from the troops were short lived, as the New Orleans became the main target of the French Vauban. With bevy of weapons on board the French floating fortress was able to land 3 critical hits. Bending yet not fully buckling the ship.

Following the quick repair, John Henries swooped above and below the mess of the wounded New Orleans. Training their attention away from the Italian bombers, and onto the Toulons. Arm cannons and rocketry erupted with incredible accuracy before the robots were on top of the lead ship. Thrusters and stabilizers on the "feet" of the machines burned the deck, while fists of these beasts ripped whole chunks of the vessel apart. In a one two punch move, the last Lee scout ship was able to board and sabotage the next armored cruiser.

On the other side of the Panatelleria, air burst mines and the closing Ottoman Dreadnought made quick work of the quickly fading Italian line. With such great loses, the near lone Affondatore signaled a full retreat. With their flank won, Ottoman sailor's turned their eyes to the right just in time to see the Hisar's legs lift the massive ship up out of the water. Drops of water fell back to the sea as the land ship mounted the island with ease. Climbing right to were the existing airfield lay, the bombards targeted and fired on the French Carrier assisting the Vauban. Each corrosive round hit its mark blistering through the deck, setting off critical fires along the whole length of the ship.

Panatelleria securely under joint FSA and Ottoman control, remaining opposition was begrudgingly forced to retreat. There would be grave repercussions for the failure at this key strategic post...even for the victorious side, as the fight had left them wounded as well. The Mediterranean had been blown wide open...

Condottieri:

The Grand Coalition minds behind the attack instantly gave orders to step forward with the next leg of the campaign. Take the fight to Italian shores. A directive was passed to American reserve forces to take the Gemelli islands. Twin towns each on their own major island, Southeast of Sardinia. The intent had been to supplement the attack with forces from those evolved in the raid on Pan, however the losses received there were too many. Comprised mostly of newer units fresh from Avondale Shipyard (Notably the first usage of the Boston Class submarine), these sailors were eager for a fight.

The fleeing Affondatore moving full steam ahead beat out the Coalition advance, and debriefed the Italian force at the Gemelli in full. There was no time to wait for the squabbling Tetrarchs to give an order. Action must be taken now, to repay spilt Italian blood with that of their enemies. When the nascent FSA heavy guns showed up they were only able to spot a small squadron of light cruisers and corvettes far off in the distance. Believing the Gemelli islands to be uncontested they made route straight for them. Keeping the cruisers at bay with long range fire. However in a church tower over looking the sea, spotters were relaying precise coordinates to the entirety of the Italian fleet. Choosing to instead hide wholly behind island cover and ambush.

Over and over directed fire rained down on the Federated States battle group as they progressed. Ship after ship fell in the mightiest of explosions. While smaller ships moved in and out of cover before them. Firing and hiding in a near seamless stream. Disarrayed, many FSA captains tried to push forward in an attempt to hide themselves behind cover. An unfortunate choice as Ussicore speed boats darted around edges of beaches to unleash close range torpedoes. These same vessels were able to hunt and chase down the Boston submarine. Waves of fast moving torpedoes detonated all around her, resulting in horrific fires. Ultimately bringing her to rest on the sea floor. In all the ambush had lasted for less than an hour, leaving the entire advance routed. A balancing victory had been earned by the Italians.

Thanks. Finally found the notes from this game...and found time to finish the report. Sadly the Condottieri mission, and the next, I don't have images for. However found the notes for the third game as well! Shooting for another game in the coming weeks, as I'd like to continue the story line a bit.

Insurgency

The war progressing in the mediterranean had been a brutal affair. Such attrition meant that the supply lines needed to sustain such a front, would need to be delivered into the field with record time. Utilizing local RAJ support, that had been built for the victorious Australian Japanese offensive, mustering units appeared an all but easy objective to replenish the surge for the Grand Coalition.

Looks like you have the makings of a pretty slick merchant marine there! Can't wait to see them in action.
