Battle For Iceland
« on: April 28, 2016, 10:59:24 pm »
Anyone know what specific ships are in that box? I can't recognize them all by sight, and no one seems to have listed them out that i can find.

I have some credit burning a hole, and debating jump-starting my Prussians with that. Or a Hochmeister. Or getting my FSA going again with a Restitution. Or yet more Planetfall models... decisions decisions...

I'll have to look up stats. Or see if I'd rather have both the Bombardment group and the Wolf Pack.
This exercise has at least helped me realize what I want to focus on this summer: DW and Planetfall.

yeah that's the two I'm working on also. I have all the dw stuff I want for the year so that's why ima get some planetfall to have options. Honestly I bought the bombardment sets they are pretty sweet I would say go for those. The wolf pack I don't know much about but its the unique set to the Prussians and looks well built. The points values in the Iceland set are a bit low but you get some nice extras.

As a PE player, this set has me quite excited. The DDs are so-so, but having more support cruisers and escort carriers is always a good thing. Basically, this set looks like a good way to beef up my accompaniment choices.

So I was all set to order BfI, but thought, "I'll just wait and see what the new releases hold, since it end of month"

No new DW, but all the Syndicate fleet boxes! Literally the one thing that could distract me back towards Firestorm right now. Dammit! :-)

Ok! Who has theirs?! I picked mine up from the FLGS yesterday on my way home from the airport. Upon my first glance through the rules, it looks pretty decent to me.

Got mine... love the minis, love the islands, love the terrain.

I find it weird it came with ONE laser cut move template, but not the others.

The Fleet Action Rules are a fair match for the Taskforce rules, with the dread fool Damage Table thing. So I won't be playing that rules version. :-)

Interesting..would you mind elaborating on this point? Is it that the Damage Table rules do not work as written, or is it a personal preference thing for you?

I had a small rant in the Haven Spartan Day thread about it. But here's the gist:

The Damage table is simply bad design. Its one thing when a 7x7 table like that is used for Boarding, which is inherently unpredictable and cinematic.
But when used for every single shot, the preponderance of multiple games seems to show that the actual Attack Roll matters little compared to whether we both roll high, low, or split on the Damage table Roll. Few attack rolls against comparable targets get to 2x or 3x DR, which is where the table modifiers actually feel important. Remembering that 2xDR is higher than core rules CR, you actually don't even hit it that often.
Also, standing table mods like Pack Hunter or Elusive Target seem to have more weight than they should by being auto mods on that table.

So I would like almost everything else in the Fleet Action design, but that Damage Table feels like a clunky throwback to crappier games. And since you STILL have to count all the attack dice successes, compare to DR, etc, then do that opposed roll, I'd say the attack and damage sequence actually takes MORE time that regular FS alone!

There's many alternate approaches beyond that table that could have been used - it just feels clunky and poorly implemented. And very NOT FUN when your attack roll comes 1 pt short of 2xDR, and both roll low on the Damage chart to inflict only a single Disruption token. Ugh.

Interesting points, Dale. I can certainly see how the extra level of randomness can be frustrating, in theory. I am still interested in trying it out for myself to see, though!

Mileage may vary, but after the first few times, every time using the table felt like an extra unneeded step, and clunkier than just a crit table (Rolling a simple Crit check like in HALO would've been FAR more satisfying)

I hear you! It does seem odd that the extra step of the chart was added, given that this is intended to be the fast-play version of the rules!

I got assembly pretty much done on my Iceland set, going to paint this week ahead of Tacticon.

I found the general rules for an Oil Platform, but does anyone know where the DW rules for the Prussian Floating dock might be?

I also gave the Quick rules a second perusal. I'm still not sold on the Damage Chart, which is a shame because just about EVERY OTHER thing in the book feels right.
I think the DW damage d=chart is actually harsher than the Firestorm one. For hitting 1-times your DR, with no other modifiers, if we both roll a six on the damage chart, that inflicts 7x Damage! That's killing even a Battlecruiser in ONE shot! So okay, maybe that speeds up the game, but it feels utterly crappily random.

I did see this proposal on the forums to replace that chart, and I like it for being straightforward and easy to recall.

Damage Results:
Exactly DR = 1x Disorder/Vulnerable Token
> DR = 1x Damage
Exactly 2x DR = 2x Damage Plus Disorder Token
>2x DR = 2x Damage
Exactly 3x DR = 3x Dam Plus token

And so on.

This makes the "Crit" result only happening when you hit the number exactly, making it uncommon but not rare. But requires NO extra rolls.
