Historical Naval Games / Project Jutland - A Spot of Light Cruising
« on: August 07, 2016, 07:42:58 am »

http://yarkshiregamer.blogspot.be/2016/08/project-jutland-spot-of-light-cruising.html

Salute fellow gamers and Naval History type people,

Latest installment on the downward slope of Project Jutland with another 27 ships complete.

Included are some C in C ships (for the first and last time) great little models, good crisp casting and detail superb, it's a shame the range isn't bigger and more readily available in the UK. Thanks to Wargames Emporium in Sheffield for getting these for me.

I just have 8 GHQ Armoured Cruisers in da house waiting to be built, apart from that my final order is in with WTJ for the last ships, so hopefully if the owner reads this he will get them dispatched quickly !

Historical Naval Games / Re: HMS Engadine- 3d Printing Tis t'Future
« on: August 06, 2016, 11:02:00 am »
I'm sure it will be the future, it's well out of my technical ability,  I'm just the dumb painter after all !

So far it's been quite expensive too, a 3d printer just for one ship, we have about 5 people who want a model so we are down to a unit price of about £250 each so far  :D

Hi everyone,

Those of you following Project Jutland will have been wondering how I was going to solve a problem called Engadine.

Well here she is in all her witchcraft like 3d printing through the air malarkey. She's not GHQ but I'm proud of her, she will sit nicely with the other ships in the collection.

Thanks to Andrew Dickinson for the design and build of the ship. Hopefully he can answer any technical questions because I haven't got a clue. I'm still waiting  (although not expecting) the Inquisition to come knocking.

It will be interesting to see how traditional companies react to this new technology as it becomes avaliable.

Historical Naval Games / A Casual Sundays WW1 Naval Action
« on: July 26, 2016, 01:27:24 pm »

http://yarkshiregamer.blogspot.co.uk/2016/07/a-casual-sundays-ww1-naval.html

As a break from painting WW1 ships I actually played a game with them !

We used a random selection method to pick our forces and each of the 4 players had 2 Dreadnoughts a Light Cruiser and 4 Destroyers.

It was a great enjoyable days gaming, I am really pleased with how the rules are progressing and other than a tweek here and then the "standard" version is done. I already have lots of ideas for the Fast Play Jutland version.

The British lost a LC and 3DD, the Germans 2DD, Warspite was hit rather unluckily by a Torpedo and Collingwood lost its Bridge, the Germans didn't come off scot free as two of their Dreadnoughts lost turrets.

Pop by t'blog (link above) for the full story.

Historical Naval Games / Re: Project Jutland - Destroyers Everywhere

Cheers Ruckdog, no problems share as far as you like !

I like to think that we had an official "Destroyer Naming" department in the Royal Navy and they spent a lot of time in the pub at lunchtime, hence the "afternoon" names.

Cheers

Well boys and girls that was a slog, getting through the neck end of 50 Destroyers  (and Torpedo Boats for the pendants out there).

However it has made a big dent in the number of ships needed to complete the project. 78% of the Germans and 64% of the British are done with a vast majority of my remaining ships "in da bungalow", just have 1 WTJ order to do.

En avante !

Afternoon Naval Gamers,

Just a quick mind update on Project Jutland, the last 6 German Dreadnoughts are finished, that's all the big guns done, hurrah !

Lots more pics on the blog post. Just the 52 Destroyers and Torpedo Boats on the paint tray to be getting on with then. No time for slacking.

Hi Ruckdog,

A trip to Historicon would not be out of the question, it's something I have always fancied doing and although the game space wise is massive the actual volume of stuff is not massive, it's possible.

Size wise for the table it's something we are still looking at, the 24 ship British Battle line is 15 ft long for a start ! Currently we are thinking about a central table 6ft wide (maximum reach for gamers) and at least 20 ft long with two further "manoeuvre" tables  maybe 4 ft wide at each side of the long ends with a walkway between them. Once the ships are done we will be looking at trying out some ideas at our club. My home table is 12 ft x 6ft so we are a bit limited on what we can try there.

Rules wise we have our own, still in the playtesting stage, once I'm happy with those as a general gaming set I will look at modifying them for the big one.

Very much concentrating on finishing the models before I worry too much about how we do it.

Hi Landlubber,

Rather than read a book I would recommend watching this https://vimeo.com/162655850

It's a 25 minute animation of the Battle excellent stuff and a really good introduction.

Book wise there are probably too many too chose from, my go to book is Jutland an analysis of the fighting by John Campbell but I really wouldn't recommend it to any but the Uber geek, it's hard work but packed full of detail, ideal for a rule writer or someone who wants a 2 page description of a single hit !

Jonathan Sutherlands The Battle of Jutland 2007 is as good as any of the many books out there as is Jutland the German perspective by Tarrant. Angus Konstam has a new book out on the Battle, lots of good reviews but haven't read it myself yet.

http://yarkshiregamer.blogspot.co.uk/2016/05/project-jutland-5-minute-fleet-other.html

Evening all,

Project Jutland continues a pace with my 4th batch of ships done, blog post has lots of pics of the new stuff.

There are two Helgoland Class along with the 6 Pre Dreadnoughts of the German High Seas Fleet plus some misc Light stuff.

I have taken the opportunity to work out progress so far and I am just over 50% complete on the Germans and 46% complete on the British . That's at 1 ship model per ship including Destroyers at 1/2400.

I did consider scaling back the Destroyers to 2:1 but thought what the hell, I may never get chance to do this again especially with this much space for the display, so let's do it properly !

I may try and take it to some shows next year, let me know if you have the space.
