The Swap Shop / Selling new Dystopian Wars and Dropfleet Commander
« on: March 29, 2023, 08:28:51 am »
Hi everybody,
I have been hanging on to my Dystopian Wars (Spartan Era) and Dropfleet Commander (Hawk Wargames Kickstarter) models and it is time that they find a home with someone who will have the time to enjoy them.

I am based in Germany, so shipping within the EU will be quite cheap, but I can ship worldwide (it is just a matter of shipping costs, which are rather high at the moment).
All models are new.

Here is what I have for Dystopian Wars:

Kingdom of Britannia - Naval Battle Group
Kingdom of Britannia - Support Flotilla
Kingdom of Britannia - Wolf Pack Flotilla
Kingdom of Denmark - Korsor Class Minelayer (6x)
Kingdom of Denmark - Naval Battle Group
League of Italian States -Scutum Class Escort Frigates (10x)
Prussian Empire - Arminius Frigate (6x)
Prussian Empire - Wachter Class Escort (6x)
Republique of France - Aerial Battle Group
Republique of France - Gascony MkI & MkII Battleship
Republique of France - Lyon Class Frigate (6x)
Republique of France - Support Flotilla

In addition to this list, I have two items which I can't identify:

Republique of France ? - Frigate/Escort (looks similar to the Lyon Class Frigates) (3x)
Prussian Empire ? - Frigate/Escort (I checked online for pictures but couldn't find a match, the models have the German cross on them, which makes me think that they are for the Prussians) (4x)

I bought all of those packs when Spartan Games went belly up and paid 290 EUR for the whole lot.
Now I would like to sell it - if possible also as a (partial) lot instead of posting a dozen or so parcels individually.
I checked on eBay for comparative prices in 2023 and based on sold items the total price today would be around 295 EUR.
I would be happy to sell it to you guys for 190 EUR (plus shipping).
And if you are interested in just parts of the lot, please let me know as well, I am sure we can find a good deal.

***

And here is my Dropfleet Commander stuff, that needs a new home:

Bases - 20 sprues + Flight Stands - 4 sprues + Hawk Widgets - 1 sprue
Civilian Cruise Liner - 4 models
Launch Assets (Fighters, Bombers and Torpedos) - 2 sprues
Modular Space Station - 4 sprues
PHR Cruisers - 5 sprues
PHR Cruisers with Battlecruiser upgrade bits - 1 sprue
PHR Frigates - 2 sprues
Rulebook (2016)
Rulebook (2016) (slipcase damaged)
Scourge cruisers - 4 sprues
Scourge frigates - 3 sprues
Shaltari Cruisers - 6 sprues
Shaltari Cruisers with Battlecruiser upgrade bits - 1 sprue
Shaltari Frigates - 2 sprues
UCM Cruisers - 7 sprues
UCM Cruisers with Battlecruiser upgrade bits - 2 sprues
UCM Frigates - 4 sprues

All of this came from the Dropfleet Kickstarter plus add-ons that Hawk Wargames ran in 2016.
TTCombat sells most of these models still today (except for the Civilian Cruise Liner, which was a KS exclusive, the first edition rulebooks and the Battlecruiser upgrade bits also seem to have vanished (and being replaced by Resin models)) and buying all those sprues in the TTComabt webstore would cost 1000 GBP (1137 EUR).
Again, I would be happy to sell it as a lot, and I would be willing to part with it all for 500 EUR plus shipping.

But if you are interested in just parts, I put together the following "starter fleets":

PHR set (6 Cruiser sprues, 1 Battlecruiser upgrade bit set, 2 Frigate sprues, 4 base sprues) - 125 EUR (plus shipping)
Scourge set (4 Cruiser sprues, 3 Frigate sprues, 4 base sprues) - 100 EUR (plus shipping)
Shaltari set (7 Cruiser sprues, 1 Battlecruiser upgrade bit set, 2 Frigate sprues, 5 base sprues) - 150 EUR (plus shipping)
UCM set (9 Cruiser sprues, 2 Battlecruiser upgrade bit set, 4 Frigate sprues, 7 base sprues) - 200 EUR (plus shipping)

Just let me know if you are interested in any of these, ok?
Thanks and happy gaming,
Michael

Seeing the new concept art and reading the few fluff snippets makes me cautiously optimistic. Some of the changes will need to getting used to (like the Aquan fluff, or that the Veydreth and Bakash are now major factions), but given that they jumped the timeline quite a bit into the future most of these changes can be explained nicely.

And I really like the look of the new designs. The Sorylian battleship looks sweet and I am looking forward to seeing more for "my" fleet ;). I also like how the new Terran models use some of the Directorate design inspirations to indicate their merging.

Maybe Warcradle can bring FSA back in a nice way, and if not, at least we might get some cool looking models that will fit into the old line of ships pretty well.

Hi everybody,
Catalyst is currently running their Battletech Clan Invasion Kickstarter, which exceeded their wildest dreams and is currently at over 1 million USD. It will take them a year and then some to fulfill this project, but it looks like they have their eyes on Leviathans for their next Kickstarter.

If you are not aware of this game - it was a rather short-lived steam-punkish fleet battle game with flying ships, set in an alternate 1900s timeline. The premise is not too different from Dystopian wars, but the game itself is. I have never played it, but it seems to me like a mix of Dystopian Wars and Battletech, which could be an interesting mix.

Here is the announcement:

General Discussion / Re: MBS Podcast Episode 40

The episode ends in the middle of the last (?) segment - pretty much mid-sentence.
I hope you can add the missing/incomplete segment to the next episode as it would have been great to listen to it in its entirety.

Otherwise, great episode, as always.
Thanks a lot :)

I voted for Planetfall and Dropzone as the scale is great for larger confrontations and the models look great.

But there is one other game that I would like to see discussed as well: Battletech
It is one of the earliest miniature games and still going strong (well, it is a nieche within a nieche, but the community is pretty stable), it just had two new box sets released (with great plastic models) and with the (old) Aerotech there is a nice thematic tie-in to space battles.

Dystopian Wars / Re: Legacy models in 3.0
« on: April 30, 2019, 04:06:56 am »
When Spartan Games went belly up I bought quite a few boxes for various fleets (all in all one rather large shipping box still awaiting assembly and painting). Having a new and actively supported ruleset has a lot of appeal, but if that will exclude all of the older models, then count me out, 2.5 or even 2.0 is still a very solid ruleset to play with casually.

Misc. Naval Games / Re: Where would you set a fantasy naval wargame?
« on: February 11, 2019, 07:25:04 am »
how you would translate elves nature, delicateness and edge of ancient Greece aesthetic into a more industrial setting.

I think elves would be pretty easy to do - and very much akin to how they functioned and looked in Battlefleet Gothic. Give them large solar (power) sails where the orientation towards the sun defines their max. speed and maybe even their energy output (weapons, shields) in general...

I certainly would enjoy a ASoIaF naval game as I am a fan of that IP.
The Forgotten Realms also lend themselves for a rich thematic setting - including flying ships powered by Magic as portrait in the "Counselors and Kings" trilogy by Elaine Cunningham.

But I have another funny idea that I want to throw into the mix - how about a game about desert ships? Large wooden ships rolling across the vast sand seas, propelled by sails, complete with terrain (and line of sight) like mountains, ergs, dunes, wadis and oases and things like sand storms or huge sand worms (a lá Dune) - that would certainly be unique.

General Discussion / Re: MBS Monthly Poll #30: Favorite Naval Game of 2018
« on: November 20, 2018, 04:34:23 am »
I voted for other.
With too much to do and too little time for hobbying or gaming - Fleet Commander takes my spot of most played naval game of 2018.

The fighters included in the box seem to the same size as the X-Wing fighters or the Wings of Glory planes. I can't imagine how Ares can include capital ships like a Battlestar into this game without totally distorting the scale - which would be a letdown for me. I would have preferred if the fighters would have been smaller (maybe not Star Wars Aramada size, but somewhere in between) to allow for a better representation of the capital ships as well.
But then, I probably won't buy into this game. As much as I like the fluff and the neat looking models, I already have more than enough game systems that need more attention.

"never play the game" ... yeah, that might happen...
I got the Kickstarter and now a rather large box of sprues waits in my attic of shame ;) Building a few models is ok (Shadespire for instance), but a metric ton of sprues is intimidating (especially with all the different armament options that need to be considered - and I do not magnetize). I have hopes to get into it with my son once he is a bit older, but I started a second job and haven't even touched by FSA ships in months, I want to paint a few more of those before starting a new project.

General Discussion / Re: MBS Monthly Poll #27: Game Editions
« on: August 14, 2018, 05:33:20 am »
I think the frequency of new editions also depends on the kind of game it is.
Self-contained board games (e.g. Nemo's War or Fleet Commander) don't need new editions every couple of years - periods of 5-10 years between editions seem to be ok in that case.
For miniature games I have heard a frequency of 2-3 years being discussed as being ideal.
And card games might need a rules update even faster than set (e.g. a new core set every 1-2 years).

The reasons for these differences are probably the release schedule (monthly/quarterly releases of a lot of new content for card games vs. a much slower influx of new content for miniature games and boardgames) and the competetiveness of the game (hyperactive tournament scene and cash prizes vs game nights at clubs with the occasional tournament). The greater the focus on tournament play and the more new product (= rules bloat & power creep), the sooner a new edition of the rules are needed to keep the game balanced.

They look cool to me, but way too sci-fi-y. A more steampunk-y look would fit the setting better, imo.
