Misc. Naval Games / Supersized Dreadfleet
« on: September 27, 2022, 12:25:11 pm »
Last month at the NOVA Open in Virginia I ran a Dreadfleet game at 6:1 scale using the model ships we had built years earlier for the Age of Sigmar narrative events. I can't remember how to post pictures directly into a forum post, so I'll just link to the respective blog post for anyone interested.

Space Naval Games / Finally playing BFG
« on: September 22, 2022, 01:13:45 pm »
I've been out of the hobby for several years now, taking a sabbatical to focus on work and school and transitioning to a new career, but in recent months I've made time again for tabletop gaming and even ran a supersized game of Dreadfleet at the NOVA Open convention a few weeks ago.

I've reconnected with some local gamers and I may be to blame for some consensus to pull together and play some BattleFleet Gothic at our FLGS. Thanks to @ruckdog I've already been thoroughly convinced this game is worth playing even though by the time I started this hobby around ten years ago it was already fading away and I never actually played it.

But I'm looking over rules again and pulling together a fleet to play in a few weeks with some old friends I haven't seen in years, and I'll post hobby updates and fleet battle pics to this thread in the coming weeks.

DWVA / Spartan event at NOVA Open 2016
« on: September 19, 2015, 09:15:11 am »
I'm planning to run a Spartan Games competitive event at NOVA Open 2016, but I need help deciding which game to commit to running. I'm trying to gauge what might draw the most players from the NoVA area as well as possibly farther away, and new players which don't otherwise attend NOVA Open for 40K, Warmachine, or other events.

NOVA Open is a tabletop gaming convention every Labor Day weekend in Arlington, VA. We had over 1,000 attendees this year. And games included 40K, WarmaHordes, Infinity, Malifaux, X-Wing, Hobbit, Warhammer Age of Sigmar, along with demo games which included some Spartan Games this year.

I have a sponsor for a Spartan Games event next year, and after being involved with this year's con I have a good idea what to plan for next year. The NOVA Open staff are great and run a fantastic grass roots sort of gaming event.

I just need to figure out what game to commit to running next year!

DWVA / Oct 11th Demo Day
« on: September 13, 2014, 12:12:30 pm »
I'm planning a day of miniature demo games on Saturday, October 11th at my FLGS in Culpeper, VA and I'm looking for someone willing and able to run some demo games of DW.

The main concept is to run open games for people off the street--we want to grow our local community of gamers and perhaps inspire someone to try tabletop miniature gaming.  Games will be open and demonstrating the basic rules of a system as well as show off some cool, painted models.  So, the idea is someone could walk up to a table, take command of a squadron of frigates, play a turn or two, and then walk away to try another game.

We may have up to 6 different miniature games in the store being demonstrated.

I have two painted fleets I don't mind members of the public touching, but I would like to be free from running any one game--I would like to be able to talk with people walking in and maybe direct them to a table or just answer questions, etc.  So, I would like someone else locally to actually run demo games of DW--I will have everything necessary to run a game, I just need someone to arrive and show it off.

We're planning to start at 11 am and run until 8 pm, but I don't expect anyone to run games the entire time--I'm looking for commitments of 2-4 hours, so I could possibly have 2 different gamers run the same game at different times during the day.

My FLGS doesn't carry any DW products, but they carry a range of boardgames and comics.  I'm working on getting some gift certificates from the owners to reward gamers running demos.  Please contact me if you're interested.  Thanks.

DWVA / Game Vault Sunday 9/21
« on: September 10, 2014, 06:41:59 pm »
Planning to run a series of campaign games at the Game Vault on Sunday, 9/21.  Maybe throw in a game of Legions as well?

***UPDATE***
I am NOT going to make it on Sunday the 21st, so no big campaign game.  Sorry.

Space Naval Games / Star Wars Armada
« on: August 25, 2014, 04:49:03 pm »
I enjoy X-Wing, but I'm more interested in a fleet action game with system mechanics which simulate larger ships.  Looks like Armada is the next Fantasy Flight game for me:

DWVA / Historicon Event Planning
« on: July 04, 2014, 11:04:29 am »
So, CDR-G has reserved some times and tables at Historicon coming up in 2 weekends.  What next?

1. We need a basic set of guidelines for the event.  What's the MFV, any special rules, etc?
2. We should post the event on the SG Community calendar.  A lot more DW players see events on that forum than on ManBattlestations (at least for now), and some of those may be coming out to VA to attend Historicon.  We can also get the word out to other players in the region--I have an unofficial mailing list, but we can also email members of MBS as well.
3. Designate tasks needed to make this happen.  Who can act as TO?  Who can bring terrain?  Who can act as ringer and sit out in case there is an even number of players turning up for the event.

Historical Naval Games / Sails of Glory
« on: January 18, 2014, 11:26:51 pm »
I just set up a solo game to work out how the system mechanics work, aiming to play against an opponent sometime this week.  It seems like a great introductory age-of-sail game, and I think I can persuade some of the X-Wing players at the FLGS to give it a try.

From near the Atlantic coast of the United States, I'm wishing everyone on ManBattlestations.com a Happy New Year!  I just spent the evening playing a variety of tabletop games at my FLGS, and I hope everyone gets plenty of opportunities to play favorites games this year.
