I'm up for trying this out with the Japanese, 3 ships at different classes, the Yamato battleship (70 pts), Myoko cruiser (24 pts), and Type 13 Subchaser (4 pts), just to get a feel for the differences between the different surface ship types.

Lets just go with an OOB x2 to start.

Why not start with Haruna, Kongo, 2 cruisers, 4 destroyers.

Lets stick with the WWI BB's to Start.
I will go with Nevada and West VA, 2 Cruisers 4 destroyers

I will get a map posted Weds. take your time and look over your cards

How do we do the dice?

I took the fun out of the build for you and built us equal fleets for training.

Be back Weds night. Ask as many questions as you'd like as we go!

Things got busy at work this past week, then away though the weekend, but I've gone through the rules, and I'm ready to post at least 1 move each night.  Thanks for the built fleet--my background is in historical games, so I don't find building forces as much fun as playing scenarios.

Here goes my initiative roll:

(roll)2d6(/roll)

Oops, apparently not a good idea to modify a die roll post to include a comment!  Here comes my "official" initiative roll, 2d6 with results added:

Rolled 2d6 : 1, 1, total 2

Is it like this test
Rolled 2d6 : 1, 2, total 3

Okay so some ships have a flagship, either flag 1 or flag 2 as a bonus to initiative.

They dont stack but you use the larger.

Also there are cruisers and destroyers with a leader role, like the San Fransisco and Allen M Sumner.
San Fran gives you +1 initiative for each dd you own, up to 3.
Sumner gives you +1 if you have another Destroyer.

So if I have Enterprise (+2) SanFran and 2destoyers it would be 2d6 +4

So Sanfran and 3 destroyers 2d6 +3

Enterprise (+2) North Carolina (+2) 2d6 +2

Flagships dont stack, neither would multiple SanFran

You dont use your +initiative to deploy, just a 2d6.
After both deploy, you roll again to see who moves 1st.
On the movement rolls you add your initiative boosts.

All right, I'm probably going to fail this roll--even with +1 DRM I'm probably not going to beat your 11.  I downloaded some ship cards, but clearly not all of them because I don't have cards for some of my ships, so after I fail this roll I'm going to take some time figuring out how to move ships, etc.

Rolled 2d6 : 1, 5, total 6
"+1"

So, I've been trying to figure out how to move ships and post those moves on the online forum, and it just occurred to me when reading through the rules again that I don't need to actually move any ships.  Every naval game I've played has always had some kind of mandatory movement unless ships start at anchor or turn into the wind or reverse engines; but I'm beginning to realize that A&A is very abstracted.

This to say that I can effectively state that none of my ships are moving (I understand that doesn't get me any closer to the objective locations), and then I can pass my turn and allow you to post your movement so I can see how that plays out and not look completely foolish by posting moves which then you'll point out are restricted or otherwise illegal moves in the game.  (I'm looking specifically at the bit on page 13 of the advanced rules:  "In your Sea Movement step, you can move any, all, or none of your Ships....")

So, all of the Japanese ships remain on station!  Your move....

For the purpose of the learning the phases and this being a surfce and sub only test game, I would suggest you move.

Without air it will be at least 2nd or 3rd turn before ships are in range.
Subs sooner, maybe.

A typical game has 3 objectives but their are deathmatches scenarios etc.

The only way to learn is full steam ahead!

All my ships will move forward to sectors. Ships row9 subs row 6.

You can move after me. We will skip sloe rolls!

All right then, Japanese ships move up to row 3 and the subs move to attack.  I-19 to 6b to intercept Barb, and I-19a to 6f to intercept other Barb.

I think I roll 3d6 for each sub attack.

Here is the attack at B6:

Rolled 3d6 : 2, 5, 3, total 10

Here is the attack at F6:

Rolled 3d6 : 4, 5, 2, total 11

I believe I'm looking for results of 6 to hit.
