Guess this fits here . . . the designer of fleets for The Drowned and the Damned has just discounted his MyMiniFactiry prices for stl files. The elf fleet is here - https://www.myminifactory.com/object/3d-print-the-drowned-and-the-damned-elf-fleet-180681  - with the others on the artists page.

News and Rumors / Naval Assets for SF Games from Hardware Studios.
« on: June 06, 2022, 10:03:24 pm »

Hardware Studios have several nice futuristic navy vessels in their ready-printed range, but recently they have expanded into more with releases in the stl "print at home"/local printing operation market, and very nice as well. In one case, eels not included.

Ambitious project from a small company, Arcane Minis (Well known for supplying stls for game parts and components on MyMiniFactory) has a Kickstarter for the new exploration and combat game "Aldarra'.  A larger scale game than their existing "Skies of Sordane" or "Airship Campaigns", it features a wide variety of factions and has had some very positive reviews from testers and others with pre-release beta prototypes.

Historical Naval Games / The Battle Of May Island
« on: July 01, 2021, 10:13:01 pm »
A confession: I watch odd YouTube channels of explanations of history and oddities on the web.
One of those channels is the one run by a Mr. Knudsen, including his research into bizarre and/or forgotten historical events; One of these is particularly interesting, and i have to say well presented, slice of Naval warfare history - The time in WW1 when the British Royal navy were soundly defeated by a combination of poor design and a fog bank.

Dystopian Wars / Civilian and Military Transport for DW 2,5 and beyond
« on: April 05, 2021, 11:11:05 pm »

So, someone was showing off some pre-production casts from Spartan for their Teutonic ships, which included a huge transport for moving logistics, robots and resupplying the Metzger: it's quite a brute, but it got me wondering again on something . . . What are people doing for scenarios involving escorting transports, resupplying sea and island fortress with munitions and sundries, or simply for fuel and munitions for ships at sea in either the Sturgimium Age or the Dystopian Age?

I have had some ideas, but I'd like to hear and see what others might have done.

So, since Brigade came out with their recent resin airships, I've been working on something based on a Spartan render that was not produced as a miniature. My take on the Quebec Class Assault Carrier -

General Discussion / Star Trek and Naval Protocol; Accurate Or Not?
« on: December 22, 2020, 04:56:20 pm »

OK, I confess I'm not of a naval background, and have most of my military experience second-hand from the army, and a British-based one at that. Nevertheless, I thought I had some grasp of naval procedure and protocol until this week (And yes, those who know me know I declare a ceasefire at this time of year on social media, leaving all the negativity behind; Seems like 2020 is going to test me on THAT as well, but just here ) , when during a discussion on the Star Trek: TOS episode "The Doomsday Machine" I made the error of claiming that the drama on the bridge when Kirk is on the wreck of the "Constellation" and Admiral Decker has taken command of the "Enterprise", Spock's actions and Kirk's reactions are within naval protocol and all the better for it.

 However.

Another commentator, after laughing at me for "Not spending any time on a ship" informed me that it was all wrong; That a ranking officer simply couldn't commandeer a ship when the Captain was absent and unable to return, that a second officer couldn't summarily disobey a superior officer who had delivered an illegal order, nor attempt to relieve them of duty without the co-operation of others, nor could anyone be permitted to give orders without a prior medical examination to determine competency.
While I can concede the last applies, given how the admiral was in a state of exhaustion and mental distress over the total loss of his ship's complement, I have my doubts about the others given my knowledge of standard military practice. Plus which, given how the episode "Obsession" has been praised for the accuracy of the scene in which Spock and McCoy approach Kirk to relieve him of duty when they suspect his judgement is impaired, in much the same way as Spock does in Decker's case, I fail to see the difference.

Anyone care to put me on the right course, as it were, here? Am I in error, or is the episode a bit out of line in regard to the rules?

Dystopian Wars / DW 3.0 Pre-Launch Discussion MEGA THREAD
« on: August 07, 2020, 10:51:32 pm »

I will confess I don't like the idea of plastics. Especially multi-part hulls, because frankly, I know I'm not gonna be able to assemble them all square and even and they will look awful unless I fill the hulls with some kind of filler in the hollow.

Yeah, I'm a resin fan. And living in acountry with a definite "Green" bias, I'm not sure plastics are going to be around much longer . . .
