Title: Denver Area Meet-Ups
Post by: Landlubber on October 22, 2014, 01:12:19 am
Figured I'd start this thread for scheduling smaller games at stores in the Denver area--the other thread is more for planning our larger meetings.

So if you're looking for a game at Crit Castle, Collectormania, Enchanted Grounds, or any of the other game stores in the greater Denver area, go ahead and post here!

Looking for a game on Sunday, 25 January, in the Denver area. Dystopian Wars or Firestorm. I could play at Crit Castle or Collectormania.

R U going to be at crit tomorrow? If so I may stop by to introduce myself and check out a game. Let me know.

Eh, I wasn't planning to go hang out and wait for a game. Crit Castle doesn't carry any Spartan products, so I would assume there are likely few people who game there who know about Firestorm Armada or Dystopian Wars--so I think my chances of a pick-up game are pretty slim. But if you'd like to get together for a game there, I'd be up for that.

Or I can sit home and paint my ever-growing pile of resin. :D

If anyone is free this afternoon (Thurs, 1/29) and wants to meet for a game at either Crit Castle or Collectormania, my schedule has just freed up.  I'm looking for a Firestorm game since I need to get solid on all the rules before we hit the Con in Feb.

Some rules stuff from Tuesday that we couldn't recall without looking up:

1) If a carrier has two squadrons out, and both return after attacks, it can only launch one per turn after that, correct? This proved a major limitation for the RSN carrier.

2) Can you start with SRS Squadrons launched?

3) When doing a full crit with a boarding action, and rollling a D6 on the Precision Strike Crit table, does the "Apply the Crit Effect of X..." top roll also include *another* 2 Hull points lost?

4) Are RB1 coherency effects and rear-arc shot bonuses "all or nothing"? I.e. does the entire squadron have to be in range or arc?

5) How do you measure from multi-peg big ships again? Closest peg?

I still haven't had time to follow up on these, but they're on my mind to get straight.

1) If a carrier has two squadrons out, and both return after attacks, it can only launch one per turn after that, correct? This proved a major limitation for the RSN carrier.
A:  That's correct, a Carrier may only launch one SRS token (1-6 Wings) per Command segment (see pg 87).  Also, if a Carrier becomes Disordered, all of its SRS tokens MUST immediately return to base and the Carrier cannot launch any more SRS tokens until the Disorder is removed.

2) Can you start with SRS Squadrons launched?
A:  No, they must deploy embarked on their parent Carrier (see pg 86).

3) When doing a full crit with a boarding action, and rollling a D6 on the Precision Strike Crit table, does the "Apply the Crit Effect of X..." top roll also include *another* 2 Hull points lost?
A:  No.  Your roll on the Critical Hits table, which includes the HP (depending on which Crit is rolled), and then you roll on the Precision strike table to determine any additional critical hit effects (which don't include additional damage).

4) Are RB1 coherency effects and rear-arc shot bonuses "all or nothing"? I.e. does the entire squadron have to be in range or arc?
A:  Yes, they are all or nothing.  Look at pages 65 and 66.  It states that ALL weapons must qualify for the effect (have the same Coherence effect AND meet the range criteria).  Same thing for Vulnerable Sector, ALL ships contributing to the attack must be in the target's Aft arc.  NOTE:  Impeded LOS is an exception.  If one ship in a squadron has impeded LoS to a target, it can contribute AD to the attack, but it must halve its AD before linking with the rest of the squadron.

5) How do you measure from multi-peg big ships again? Closest peg?
A:  Correct, you measure from/to the closest peg on a multi-peg model.  NOTE:  when measuring to a model with no peg or an SRS, you measure to/from the center of the model.

Anyone up for a game of Firestorm in Denver this coming Wed (2/4)?

I might be able to make Crit Castle on Wednesday, if that's the location you had in mind. Gotta check my work calendar first though--will let you know for sure tomorrow.

Lndlbbr,

I will stop by for a bit, not sure I can make 5 though.

Where r u getting the cerberus hvy crzr from? I'd be interested in a couple of spook crzrs.  :)

Sounds good.  Just let me know how many points you want to play.  Brdingpty, come by and roll some dice with us.
Title: Re: Denver Area Meet-Ups
Post by: Landlubber on February 03, 2015, 01:55:33 am
Let's go with 1000 points. I'd like to work the new heavy cruiser in, see how it does.

BrdingPrty, I ordered the Cerberus from Gamer's Haven in Colorado Springs. If you're interested in RSN ships, you might want to wait a few weeks...Spartan is releasing new all-resin sculpts for the RSN at the end of this month. The Spooks and Cerberus got a bit of a hull change as well (and the new versions will be the Shrike and Hellhound respectively, but should have the same stats as the older ships).

Here are the new boxed sets:

http://shop.spartangames.co.uk/SearchResults.asp?Cat=2031

Since I'm playing with Stephan on Wednesday, I won't be able to make it to Crit Castle on Thursday...maybe we can catch a game next week. I'd also be willing to coach you and Captain Rockman thru a game of either Dystopian Wars or Firestorm sometime. He could use my RSN and you could use your Sorylians (I think you said you have Sorylians?).

But yeah, come on by on Wednesday, meet Stephan and see his awesomely-painted Aquans and Oroshan!

So wed 2/3, is goin to be at crit castle? Since I have never played a game before, what constitutes a 1000 pt fleet? Should I bring my ships, or just observe? Let me know. Thanks.

Bring some stuff if you'd like, or you can borrow some of mine.  I'll probably give you command of one of the cruiser squadrons in my fleet.  One way or another we'll find a way to get you on the table and rolling some dice!

I could play this week at Crit Castle on either Tuesday or Wednesday. Captain Rockman, Warhawk, BrdgingPrty, I'd be happy to run you all through a game of Dystopian Wars. I have plenty of models for us to split up and use for a 2-faction game (probably French against FSA again, as they are two easy factions to teach). We would need to get started around 5 or 5:15, since Crit Castle closes at 8.  Reply here if you're interested!

That would be great Mark. Which of those two days would work better for you? We could get two games going, which would be good, because Captain Rockman and BrdingPrty are both still getting their feet wet (no pun intended).

Ok then, let's go for Wednesday the 11th. I'll be there around 5 or a little before. I'll bring my American and French Dystopian fleets. Captain Rockman and BrdingPrty, come out and join us if you can!

I'm down for Wednesday! I can make it by 5 no problem. I will bring my Russians. Want me to plan on a certain points value?
Title: Re: Denver Area Meet-Ups
Post by: Landlubber on February 09, 2015, 06:32:27 pm
Warhawk, good to go.

Captain Rockman, build an 800-point fleet with naval/air units if you can, or get as close to that as possible. I'll bring 800-point fleets for the Americans and French, incorporating naval and air units. Also, make sure to bring the rules for the Russians--they should be available to download or print for free from Spartan's Resources page.

http://www.spartangames.co.uk/resources/downloads

Let's aim to be rolling dice and moving ships by about 1715, so we have time to get a few turns in.

Also, for both of you, bring your own dice and tape measures if you have them--I can help with this if need be.

Greetings everyone,

Thanks for the game tonight markymark. The exploding dice were with me, but you hit three models with one particle cannon!

So, I didn't think I would be able to get away from my mother-in-law this weekend, but it turns out I will have about 3 hours from 12-3 on Saturday. Will anyone be available for a game at the con?

Title: Re: Denver Area Meet-Ups

I'll be in an ACW game at that time, and I likely won't stick around after the game is over (around 1 on the schedule).

Thanks for the game today. Definitly going to be bulking up the fleet to play more and bigger games.

Warhawk, you're quite welcome. Sorry about toasting your cruiser squadron with my Heat Lancettes, but I think your battleship avenged their deaths quite nicely. From a teaching perspective, I'm actually glad that we had at least one magazine explosion crit, so you could see how that worked. Next time we play, we'll work in SAWs/SASs so you can see how those work.

Drop a note here next time you're available to play!

Post by: warhawk on February 12, 2015, 08:50:07 pm
Yea its all good. While reading through the rule book noticed i did the particle cannon wrong as it does hit everything in a line so prolly would have changed things a little bit. BUT thats what learning is for. Ordered some more models already so will be able to field some differnt stuff like flyers and carriers and such. Will be back again prolly the 4th at crit and then that weekend down in the springs if anyone is down there for that.

Am planning to be at Crit Castle on Wednesday, 18 February, for some Dystopian Wars. I'll bring a couple 800-900 point fleets. Anyone interested, come on by! Obviously willing to run teaching games. Planning to be set up around 1715. Reply here if you're interested, or come on by!

DarkKnight, I can be at Crit Castle on Wednesday. Captain Rockman and I had to cancel our plans for tomorrow night due to the weather. The store closes at 8 pm on Wednesday nights, so it's best if we can get there and start rolling dice by about 5:15. I assume Dystopian Wars? Not sure how many points you have, but let's aim for about 800, naval and air. 800 points is about right for us to get through a few turns before the store closes. Let me know if that works for you.

Wow that is an early.close time. I don't get off work until 5:30. So that will probably not give us a whole lot of time. Would a Friday at collector be better as they are open until 10 I believe at that time. Maybe a few more might be able to meet being the end of the week?

Yeah, not sure what the story is there with their early close time. I can't do Collectormania during the week, it's just a bridge too far due to the store location and where I work. I can make Collectormania on the weekends, though.

Mark, no worries, I understand about vet trips.

Actually, now that I think about it, I might not be able to make it on Wednesday either--work meeting I forgot about. Will post here tomorrow after I look at my work schedule.

Back in town now. Next week would work, I could do Tuesday or Wednesday, preferably Tuesday, at Crit Castle. As usually, need to start rolling dice by about 1715 due to their closing time. Would be nice to warm up my ships before the brawl on the 21st.  ;)

Sorry Warhawk, can't make it tonight. I'm typically in the Springs at the end of the week, which is where I am now, so gaming at Crit Castle isn't usually possible for me on Thursdays or Fridays (although I was there with Stephan last night, but that was due to a work event that kept me at the airport yesterday).

I can do Crit Castle next week on Tuesday or Wednesday, however.

No worry Rockman.

It actually looks like Wednesday is going to be a better day for me. So: I'll be at Crit Castle on Wednesday, 18 March, hopefully around 1630 (that's 4:30 pm for all you non-24-clock folks). I can play Dystopian Wars, X-Wing, or Firestorm Armada, but I would prefer Dystopian Wars. Happy to do a teaching game and provide fleets if needed.

Just tossing this out one more time. I'll be at Crit Castle tomorrow evening from about 4:45 until 8 pm. Since I haven't heard back from anyone, I'm going to bring a couple DW fleets, around 800 points. Come out and play if you can, bring your own 800 point fleet (or as close to 800 as you can) or use one of mine.

I can meet one of those days (still waiting to find out which one will work). I can bring Russian Naval core with PLC fliers, or just PLC. I would prefer Collectormania.

Ok, I'm going to have to go tentative for a game on Wed.  They just changed our meeting schedules for Wed and added one from 5:30 to 6:30.  It could easily change again, so I'll let you know tomorrow if Wed looks more like a yes or a no, but if you get an opportunity to play someone else, please feel free to take it.

Stephen,

I am up for either night, but it sounds like Thursday is a more sure thing for you. Want to just plan on that? I wouldn't mind playing against some Prussian Naval core. I have yet to see them on the table. Do you mind if I use a mixed force (RC naval core with some PLC air support)? Also, thoughts on points?

If interested, which force would you be bringing? Danes?
Title: Re: Denver Area Meet-Ups

I would bring Danes, being a restart on the game I think it would be good to have a mix Prussian/Dane force so Stephen and help me thru it. I have been re-reading the rules to familiarize myself again but whatever you guys want to do I don't want to just invite myself in your guys game.

No worries dude. I say let's go for it.

I will bring 1000 pts of Russian Naval Core with some PLC support. Why don't you bring up to 1000 pts of Danes in case Stephan can't make it. We can always downgrade the pts when we get there. I will pm both of you with my contact info in case anyone can't make it.

Thanks for the game last night guys, it was a lot of fun!  I always like seeing new stuff on the table, and I now have a new respect for Danish mines, PLC Heavy Flamethrowers, and that damned Iceberg generator!

It was a fun game, I was figuring each side sunk about 250 points worth but I could totally see next turn having a couple ships prized and nearly everything except the dreadnaughts being at the bottom of the North Sea.
Title: Re: Denver Area Meet-Ups
Post by: captainrockman on March 27, 2015, 05:09:35 pm
Yeah. Turn four may have felt a little more final. I wanted to see those Danish cruisers burn to the bottom of the sea.

Rather dark, but it would of probably happened. I think I would of lost the gunships but your dreadnaught was in trouble as well so it would of been interesting. All and all fun game.

Yeah. I don't think I was winning by any means. I was just happy to finally see some PLC units put out raging fire tokens like they are supposed to. It makes it pretty theatrical.

Cool. 5:30 is a little late, since the store closes at 8:00. I can be there as early as 4:30. Let me know if that works for you.

I'm assuming you still don't have a DW fleet, right? If you do have one, bring an 800-900 point force. If not, I'll bring one for you, no worries. If possible, try to bring your own dice and tape measure!  :D

Looking for opponents for a game of either Dystopian Wars or Firestorm Armada at Crit Castle on Tuesday, 7 April. I can be there around 4:30 in the afternoon. Willing to do a teaching game, but I only have one fleet for Firestorm, so you'll have to bring your own spaceships if that's what you want to play.

I'm planning on sitting down for some Firefly. I haven't looked at the schedule for the day but I doubt they'll have a lot of open tables.

Landlubber,

I can meet you tomorrow for some DW. I can be there by 5 at the latest and maybe a bit earlier.

Interested in trying some advance or flank forces? I haven't read the rules for it more than once, and I don't know how familiar you are with it. But, it could be fun to try it out.

Thoughts on points?

Captain Rockman-

I can actually be there between 4 and 4:30, I think. Could you swing that? We'd have a little more time to play.

Sure, we can give advanced/flanking forces a go. I think we need to have a higher point total to do that, though. "Strategic forces", which are made up of flanking, reserves, and advanced forces, cannot contain more than 40% of the total MFV, and cannot contain any large or massive models. So, let's go with 1000 points, core naval (aerial models are fine, but not required), and we can work through the advanced and flanking rules.

Cool?

Landlubber,

I agree to the terms of battle.

I think the earliest my boss will let me out of work is 3:30. That means I could make it over to Crit Castle by 4:30 if I get lucky in traffic. I'll let you know when I leave work.

Excellent.

To keep things interesting, and to add a "fog of war" element, let's keep our force compositions secret until they're on the board. I'm not going to tell you what I'm running in my main and strategic forces; indeed, I'm not going to tell you if I'm even going to have strategic forces. And I don't want to know those details for your fleet either. We can still go through the normal game setup in the rulebook, and we can deploy our forces on the board when they should be deployed, if you have them (so for example, we'll both still roll for flanking forces whether or not we have them, just to keep the other player guessing). I trust that you'll adhere to the force-building rules, and that any mistakes made are honest mistakes, as long as you trust the same of me.

I think this will add a little excitement to the game, not knowing what the other player is going to deploy.

If this sounds good to you, that is.

Hey Captain Rockman-

BrdingPrty1 (Dan) and I are meeting at Crit Castle on Wednesday (20 May) around 4:30 for some Firestorm Armada. He's still learning how to play, and I know you aren't into Firestorm yet (I think that's correct, yes?), but if you wanted to show up you could play my fleet against Dan and I could coach the both of you.

Stephan and Mark and anyone else out there in Denver land,

Wednesday evenings work pretty well for me too. I live 10 blocks from the Enchanted Grounds on Bowles in Littleton. So, that is an ideal location for me. But, Collectormania works fine too. Honestly, I can make almost any night work at Enchanted Grounds. Landlubber and I played there a couple weeks ago and it is a great venue.

I'm still just playing DW and want to keep it that way for now.

Let me know if you want to get a game in. I'm especially free in November and December because my wife works in retail.

Also, Stephan, I still have your FA books with all the lore and pictures. I'll bring them next time we play together.

Hey Zorper, glad you found us! I myself am not a Planetfall player, but there are some on this site.

In the meantime, if you'd like, head over to the Roll Call thread and introduce yourself--what you play, how long you've been playing, any games you're interested in trying, where it's convenient for you to play (I'm guessing Enchanted Grounds if you live in Littleton).

Welcome aboard!

Well, Zorper had his first shot at destroying me in Dystopian Wars tonight. And he succeeded!

We played with my ships, RC (Zorper) against my PLC. About 650 points apiece. In turn three he scored a magazine explosion on one of my Podaga cruisers which ended up taking out the rest of the already damaged squadron; and putting some hurt on a gunship as well.

He learned the hard way that 10 conscripts will have a hard time against 6 elite crew when our battleships got close enough for boarding (at least he didn't shoot me). But, with a hard pounding critical effect to lower the crew down to 3 elite (from some heavy frigates), followed by another boarding from 3 cruisers (20 conscripts) he was able to prize my battleship and take the game.

Zorper joins the long list of commodores to wallop me in Dystopian Wars. A fitting welcome to the hobby!

Hello Stephan,

I survived the snow and can meet for a game on the 31st.  Where and when do you want to meet?

I bought several new Sorylian boxes, so I can do a bigger game if you want.  I'll still be slow, but I am catching on.

How about 1 at Collectormania?

Sounds good.  How many points?  I think I can do 3000+ now if we want.

Lets do 2500 since that's apparently what the Adepticon tourney will be.

2500 it is.  See you tomorrow at 1 at Collectormania.

I'm looking for a game of Firestorm this Thurs to try out the Adepticon primer scenarios.  Fleet lists are 1000pts and a link to the scenarios is under the Adepticon 2016 thread.

I'm probably going to hit Collectormania after work tomorrow for X-wing night if anyone is interested.

Anyone interested in a game of something this evening?

Normally Thursday nights are good for me, but not this one in particular.

I'm looking to test out my PlanetFall lists now that the packet is out for Adepticon.  Anyone have plans to meet up in the next couple of weeks in Denver/Colorado Springs?

Good question. It is probably about time to start thinking about a March meeting. I personally could do the last two weekends in March.

Yeah, I was thinking about that. Only days that really work for me this month are the 6th and 20th.

What does everyone think?

If the 26th isn't automatically too close to Adepticon, that's the only day I'm free. Other weekends have Trek Attack Wing Organized Play events - normally those are disposable, but this month is the "Doomsday Machine" event! No way I'm missing those! ;-)

I can do the 19th.

Hey Stephan, if you want to get a PF game in on the 19th that would work for me.

Zorper, sounds good.

Scratch that.  Family emergency just game up that is going to consume the weekend of the 19th.  I could do the 5th or 26th if possible.  Sorry.

Anyone up for a game this Saturday?  I've got something from 11-12, but I'll be right next to Collectormania, so I could be there by 12:15 or so.

Stephan I could prolly make it out this sat. What would you like to play?

I need to practice my Firestorm fleet list, or I could do Planetfall.  Sadly, I need to wait until after Adepticon to do any DW to avoid excessive rules confusion.

Looks great.  We need to get a game in.  I promised Lubber that I'd get back into DW now that Adepticon is done, though I'm suffering from a bit of gamer ADD with all the new toys I picked up at the con.
