Thanks for the heads-up! I agree, this is a really smart move by ADB. From my experiences with Shapeways, I think this will end up being a lot better than the poor casting quality of the Mongoose resin ships they put out 5-6 years ago, and will still be as economical or even better than metals. Durability/fragility could be a concern for some designs and some materials, though. I'd be a little afraid of the nacelle pylons on the Constitution snapping off if the model was printed in WSF!

I've painted a few historical naval models from Shapeways, in WSF. It's not too different, really. The biggest thing is to make sure that you seal the mini first with a couple of coats of gloss varnish (assuming WSF). That prevents the paint from soaking into the slightly pourous material, and also helps with the grainy surface texture somewhat.
