Does anyone have a pdf copy of the 1.0 rulebook they can make available, please?  I'm after the rules for tactics points.

Can you safely strip paint from resin?

Dystopian Wars / Mixed fleets
« on: January 31, 2017, 05:18:08 am »
When I started Dystopian Wars we were playing with an early rule book, 1.0 or 1.5, and it read as if mixing and matching models from various fleets was fine and acceptable, even encouraged.  I decided to try and get back into dystopian wars last week, and I thought I'd brush up on the rules while I look for a game and get ready to paint, but the option to mix fleets seem to have become much more rigid.  Am I reading 2.0 right, can I no longer use my "captured" british cruisers with my EotBS?

Has anyone had a decent look at this game? It looks pretty good at a glance.

Firestorm Armada / Question of scale
« on: January 05, 2017, 09:20:14 pm »
Now I know that FSA models are 1:10000 scale, but what about the board and scenery?  Does anyone know what the scale is meant to be?

Edit:
So I did some rough maths, involving a lot of assumptions, and came up with 1"=300Km or 180 miles, very approximate.  Given that earth is 40 million km from venus at their closest, does that seem right?

Naval Video Game Discussion / Eve, does anyone else play?
« on: January 03, 2017, 05:57:30 am »
Just wondering if there's anyone else on here who plays eve?

My character name is Charles Harrington, if anyone's interested in catching up in game.  I'm a pretty casual gamer, and I'm in gmt+930, so I doubt I'd be on much when you guys are, but you never know.

Historical Naval Games / Age of sail rules
« on: November 03, 2016, 08:01:52 pm »
About 6 years ago I found a good set of free age of sail rules, but I couldn't get minis for them at the time, so I lost them.  Does anyone know of some good age of sail rules, with detailed movement and weather, my google-fu is letting me down?

Modeling Q&A / Colour scheme
« on: October 29, 2016, 05:26:12 am »
I want to try a royal navy colour scheme on my terrans, navy blue with red go faster stripes and white highlights.  When I asked about painting the citadel range of paints was recomended, but not having seen them on models I'd like to double check colour choices.  I'm thinking Macragge blue and Mephiston red, with a nuln oil wash.  My goal is to match the roundel below.

Firestorm Armada / Fleshing out a patrol box
« on: October 23, 2016, 07:12:15 pm »
I finally have the money and opportunity to grab my patrol box this week.  I've settled on Terrans, based on reading various blogs, podcasts, and forum posts, and I was wondering if there are any suggestions on what I should get to flesh it out to 800 points.

Firestorm Armada / How hard are Dindrenzi to play?
« on: October 10, 2016, 05:02:02 pm »
It turns out more than a third of the players in my area are aquans, so I have decided to go with a different fleet.  I'm leaning towards Terrans at the moment, but I really like the look of the Dindrenzi.  So I'm wondering how hard are Dindrenzi to play for a beginner?

Naval Video Game Discussion / Pc games with naval focus
« on: September 19, 2016, 07:42:57 pm »
I've just finished listening to episode 9 of the podcast, and I thought I'd put a few PC games forward.

Homeworld: it's the game that introduced me to naval gaming, and the only RTS I know of with true 3D movement and combat.

Empire-Total War: this is turn-based strategy, real-time tactical.  The game starts at 1600 and lets you directly control your naval vessels in real-time combat.

Europa Universalis IV: a highly abstracted real-time grand strategy game, set between the late 1400s and early 1800s with a strong naval aspect.

Modeling Q&A / Painting in general
« on: September 16, 2016, 07:41:55 pm »
So to give some context to this, I used to collect Necrons in 40K and the paint job was awful.  I'm looking for some good painting tutorials for both dystopian wars ships and firestorm ships, with lots of details.  Can anyone recommend one?

Firestorm Armada / Starting as Aquans
« on: September 15, 2016, 12:40:06 am »
So, I want to play Firestorm, and I really like the look and fluff of the aquans, but I don't have an opponent or a place to play at the moment.  I'm wondering whether I should grab the patrol fleet to start, or whether it would be worth putting in a little extra and getting return of the overseers so that I can have a game if the opportunity arises?  I'd love to get the opinion of some more experienced gamers.

General Discussion / Playing long distance
« on: September 13, 2016, 10:35:14 pm »
A few years ago i had to move for work, and since then I've been trying, unsuccessfully, to find a way to play miniatures games with my old gaming friends.  Can anyone suggest a tool or method that would make playing at a distance possible, and preferably easy?

Hi, I found this site through the podcasts, which I've so far enjoyed.

I've been playing miniature wargames off and on since 2001, depending mostly on my funds and the games currently in fashion near me.  Naval wargaming is what drew me to the hobby, but I've only just started playing naval games.  I've been playing x wing and dystopian wars over the last year, but I really want to get into firestorm armada.
