Historical Naval Games / Boarding Actions
« on: April 13, 2017, 05:54:13 pm »
All the podcast discussion on Naval films has me jonesing for a good boarding action game. (Also for Star Wars Armada, but that's a different topic)

What are opinions on the best games for Age of Sail or similar boarding actions? (With or without actual cannon and maneuver beforehand)

I never could find an opponent for WOODEN SHIPS AND IRON MEN. And I have no reviews or opinions to judge between the other names that come up:
-- CLOSE ACTION
-- BLOOD AND PLUNDER
-- TRAFALGAR
and though its a fantasy boardgame, I'm horribly curious if RUM AND BONES is any good.

Opinions?

General Discussion / Press Gangers no more
« on: March 08, 2017, 06:29:34 pm »
Only vaguely naval, but Privateer Press is terminating their Press Ganger program by April 30th. They'll only work direct wuth retailers for promotional events now. So soon, I'll "only" be a Vanguard.

When GW ditched the Outriders like this, it was a bad move all-round. And eventually 1 of 3-4 reasons why I ditched GW. But here at least, they're keeping Retailer comms open.

I wondered for a sec if Spartan might follow the trend and nix Vanguards. But Spartan_Linde seem very enthusiastic for improving that program. Still very much needed IMHO, given the drop in market penetration.

Unless PP was planning a Naval game (which would TOTALLY rock... Cryx Ghost Arks and Black Ships versus Khadoran galleys?!) this has little effect on the MBS world. But its more likely I'll have more time for Spartan events now, especially at Cons.

But now, if I want a Naval/Pirate themed title, I'll have to start demoing for Blood and Plunder or something. :-)

Look is like an ornate sinister Hydra Helicarrier.
Feel reminds me of "Robur: Master of the World", right down to the pipe organ.
I totally see Vincent Price as Captain. Or Cobra Commander ;-)
"Mine is an evil laugh! MUAHAHAHAHAHA"

I didn't realize the KS was bringing in a whole new Merc Company (The League of Crimson). Dammit, more temptation!

Those EotBS goodies will be my next grab priority, I think. Running the Repair ship behind the Ayakashi seems like a plan :-)

Halo: Fleet Battles / Genghis Con 2017 - GUN ON ICE PLANET ZERO
« on: January 11, 2017, 11:40:31 pm »
GUN ON ICE PLANET ZERO
A HALO Fleet Battles/Ground Command Combined Scenario

The Covenant Huragok have conceived of a hellish new weapon. Rather than firing mere plasma, it projects a tachyon field around a heavy plasma-wreathed super-metal core, using time-dilation to rush the whole ammo construct through the lifecycle of a star. By the time it reaches the target, they are either struck by the kinetic mass of a fist sized white dwarf, or an actual pinpoint black hole travling a substantial percentage of lightspeed.
Few objects can survive. And the accurate range is measured in the scale of AU’s, not kilometers.
The Sangheili caste have named it the Feya 'Ravam aka The Mother Tongue.

The Prophets, being highly enchanted by such a weapon, have ordered it deployed to the world of Ariel.
There, it has been sufficient to cut off UNSC operation in the entire system, and leaving millions of personnel stranded on Ariel to be methodically hunted down by Covenant forces.

The UNSC has dispatched a desperate response to try and take out this weapon before the Covenant can further reinforce the system. The future of Humanity depends upon their success.

Set-Up: Two 6x4 Tables will be set side by side with walking space between them.
One shall be Ground Command terrain, as set by the organizer. The Feya 'Ravam model is placed in the middle of the Covenant long edge.
One shall be a space battlefield, with a planet model for Ariel in the center. Other terrain as the organizer chooses. There will be a large amount of debris fields, representing the UNSC ships destroyed by the Feya 'Ravam.
•   Game Rules: This is a TEAM scenario for up to four teams, up to four players per table.
•   Each HALO Ground Command player should bring whatever models they have ready. Sides will be evened out points wise, up to two players per Faction.

•   HALO Fleet Battles Players should bring up to 1500 pts, for no more than 3000pts per side. Only one Specialist Battle Group per player. ONE player per side is welcome to bring a Super-Carrier or CAS respectively, which will count as their Specialist Group. One Commander and one Hero per Team.  Updated Fleet PDFs should be used.

•   The Feya 'Ravam counts as 500 pts for the Covenant Side in Fleet Battles. Players may divide that tax amongst themselves as they see fit.

•   Once forces are deployed, play starts simultaneously. However, neither table may move to the next turn until the other table is ready.

•   As the start of every turn, if the Feya 'Ravam model is not engaged in combat, it may fire. The Covenant Team may choose to target any UNSC model that is not behind a moon. Roll 3d6 and add their total to 15 =>The attack rolls that many dice at Firepower 5. No other Modifiers of any sort apply. If the target lives, it takes one automatic Vulnerability token, then rolls for Crits as normal. No Commander abilities maybe used by the Covenant on this shot, but UNSC may use defensive abilities that do not impose firepower modifiers.

•   The Feya 'Ravam may only be destroyed by Ground Forces. Stat line is TBD.

•   Ships within

•   The last Team with ships in orbit, or the most MFV in orbit when time is called, is the winner. The UNSC wins immediately if they destroy the Feya 'Ravam.

•   Prizes will also begiven for Best Painted, and Best Sportsmanship.

DWCO Events / Genghis Con 2017 - Opal Harbor - MARS ATTACKS
« on: January 11, 2017, 11:39:36 pm »
MARS ATTACKS – OPAL HARBOR
A Dystopian Wars Ambush Scenario
Background:
Babylon Base was established so the two great Alliances could meet to negotiate in neutral waters. A solemn oath by the Prussian High Command, and the guarantees of the Antarctican Science Council have ensured the base is protected as neutral ground.
Six great fleets, and Ambassadors and Heads of State from many nations have arrived for midwinter peace talks, counting on the cold weather to ensure cooler heads prevail.
What was not counted upon was agents of the Red Planet knowing of the meeting, and sending their own delegation. A sword of Damocles has descended, intent on decapitating Earth’s leadership.
•   Limit 6 Player Spots – Players should bring up to 1000pts of Dystopian Wars models from a single faction. 2 Players may team up for a single slot, each only bringing 500 if they wish.
•   At least 50% of a fleet’s forces must be Naval or Diving, with the exception that ONE Dreadnought Robot may be used as the mandatory Large-Plus model. Normal fleet composition rules otherwise apply.
•   Player Fleets are deployed docked in island or Babylon Base ports along one long edge, all within 12” of that table edge. All models will be facing their Fore Arc into the dock.
•   All player models, even 360 movement models, must spend the first turn with a Low Speed Maneuver Marker backing out of dock. Once they are “clear” they may remove the Low Speed marker.
•   No SAS tokens may start launched, nor launch on the first turn.
•   Terrain will include icebergs, islands, and at least one water-fortification representing Babylon Base. A random player will control the Base on the first round, and control will pass counter-clockwise.
•   The Martians will deploy 3000pts within 12” of the opposite long edge.
•   Martians will have the first turn.
•   The game ends after 7 turns maximum.
•   Prizes will be given for:
o   Highest Combined Total of slain Martian MFV plus remaining own MFV
o   Best Painted
o   Best Sportsmanship
•   If the Martians destroy all Earth models, no prizes will be awarded. 

FACO / Genghis Con 2017 - We Can Ill Afford Another Dramos!
« on: January 11, 2017, 11:38:44 pm »
WE CAN ILL AFFORD ANOTHER DRAMOS
A Firestorm Armada and Planetfall Combined Scenario
Alliance and League forces have converged on a barren world called Klendathu. They vie for the rich resources of mineable and fossilized biomass that lace the entire substrata. This strange bio-substance is stronger than most ship hulls, half the weight per thickness, with an astonishing malleability until hardened by electrical current. Enough of this material will set any races shipbuilding ahead by decades.
Neutral mining colonies have been expanding on the world for over a century, yet word of the new substance found is only weeks old. The civilian population numbers over a billion, now mostly huddled in their underground tunnels.
Fleets and ground forces were rushed to claim the world. While the ground forces winnowed their numbers and dug in, the Naval forces annihilated one another, with tattered remnants fleeing for reinforcements. New fleets have arrived, but with limited ground reinforcements.
If one side feels they are losing, elements of each side have sworn to destroy the prize, rather than cede it to their enemies.
Set-Up: Two 6x4 Tables will be set side by side with walking space between them.
One shall be Planetfall terrain, with 4 total objectives within 18” of the board center, as set by the organizer.
One shall be a space battlefield, with a planet model for Klendathu in the center. Other terrain as the organizer chooses, but nothing within 10” of the planet.
•   Game Rules: This is a TEAM scenario for up to four teams, up to four players per table.
•   Each Planetfall player should bring a 3000pt force, normal build rules, with a single Battle Group.
•   PF Players with Skydrop assets may leave them off table, but their deployment will be limited by the success or failure of their Firestorm teammate (see below)

•   Each Firestorm player should bring a 1000pt fleet, normal build rules.

•   Firestorm fleets will deploy within an 18” square in each table corner. Regardless of Alliance or League status, each treats the other as an enemy. No ships may start in reserve or Shunt in, though Hidden Deployment will work as normal.

•   The Firestorm table will play one complete turn while the Planetfall table deploys. Players will dice for turn order each round.

•   Each Planetfall player will deploy within an 18” square on the PF table, in the corner to match the position of their Firestorm teammate, in the turn order determined on the space table. This deployment will include Skydrop and Artillery markers.
•   Due to the early morning fog that shrouds the main battlefield, Recon units may move only at cruising speed, but with normal maneuverability, and may come closer to the enemy than usual, as long as they stay out of 4”. Recon moves occur in the same order as deployment.

•   Once the first Firestorm turn is complete, the Planetfall table may start their first turn while the Firestorm table starts their second turn.

•   No table may move to the next turn until the other table is ready for their next turn. The organizer will be empowered to keep play moving, even if cutting off a slow players activations.

•   For each team’s Firestorm Tier 2 or larger ship within 10” of the planet, if that team has Skydrop assets, they may drop in 250pts per ship.

•   Each ship/squadron within RB1 of the planet, and the planet in arc, may fire at units on the Planetfall board, regardless of Planetfall phase.  The active player must inform the Planetfall players by stating INCOMING! The PF game will pause while the Firestorm player declare their ground target, and resolves firing. The same number of dice is used as if shooting another ship, and any LOS is assumed.

•   Weapon MARs translate as follows:
   Primary – Nothing special
   Kinetic => Kinetic
   Beam => Pinpoint 2
   Scatter => Scatter
   Nuclear or Bioweapon => Terror
   Torpedo => Barrage and Anti-Personnel
   Corrosive or Grav => Corrosive
   Cyberweapon => Cyber
   No ship weapons provide Intercept.

•   Any ship/squadron with at least 10 dice attacking may choose to fire ONE weapon per turn as  Artillery instead. Ignore the dice total and roll artillery as normal for that race. The template scatters only 1d6” but always scatters (no choice on roll of a 1), and may be placed anywhere. Use the matching MAR for the weapon fired, not the racial Artillery MARs.
•   SRS may not attack the planet.

•   The Zero Hour Tracker will be set to 50. The winning team is the one that zero’s out by the largest margin. In case of a tie, continue play and check the margin the following end phase.

•   Objectives are worth 5 pts in each end phase.

•   Prizes will be given for Overall Winning Team, Best Painted, and Best Sportsman.

FACO / Way Forward? Genghis 2017?
« on: January 02, 2017, 07:29:01 pm »
Hey locals,

Any ideas on what to do to keep Firestorm (And Planetfall) from vanishing altogether around here?

I was considering an event at Genghis Con, but it can't get much smaller turnout that the past few and still be worth it. Asking folks to pay $25 or $45 for a Con badge for one event doesn't seem like a good recipe. Running multiple Spartan events wont work, casue most Spartan folks around here seem to play only one of the games.

General Discussion / ROGUE ONE
« on: December 21, 2016, 03:46:32 pm »
Before I use Spoiler block, if you haven't seen it yet, why the heck not?!?

GO NOW. I'd place it a full quantum level of quality above TFA. Or as one critic said, best Star Wars film since 1980.

On to details

[spoiler]

This film has me wanting to play ARMADA and X-Wing more that anything short of REBELS has inspired in years. ARMADA in particular seems a foregone conclusion ... How long til we see "The hammerhead maneuver" as a card? ;-)

The Shield Gate scenario is an awesome one, and I'll be noodling on that. It reminds me of a Bab5 jump-gate scenario I ran once, which in turn was inspired by one of the Honor Harrington book scenarios.

With the new ships here, I see a year's worth of release schedule for X-Wing and Armada both.

The one ship that looked cool, but is ridiculous in hindsight has to be the Mon Calamari "Giant Keel" Cruiser. Why, oh why, would you extend your Bridge out on a giant boom from the main hull, and then encase it in glass? Sure, it's great for looking down at the planet for no useful tactical reason... but damn, I kept waiting for Vader's ship to slice that thing clean off.

Also, maybe its just me, but even a tiny Frigate accelerating to lightspeed should punch a massive kinetic hole in a Star Destroyer suddenly in its path...

DWCO / Haven Auction
« on: December 13, 2016, 02:54:54 pm »
Anyone in CO planning to attend the Gamer's Haven Winter Auction on Jan 21st?
And if so, as seller or buyer or both?
I'm debating putting up excess DW and Firestorm, maybe even some old Bab5 stuff.
And perhaps looking for some EotBS or Directorate ... no firm plans, just notions.
