News and Rumors / Kickstarter for 3D Terrain Files
« on: January 09, 2024, 12:48:58 pm »
Hi all,

This kickstarter just launched today (Jan 9, 2024).  Quite a few pieces that would go potentially with D-Wars, Armada, and other age of sail games.  I'm not affiliated, just a backer.

Firestorm Armada / Firestorm Armada...Not fully dead yet?
« on: August 24, 2023, 01:28:36 pm »
So it appears that Firestorm Armada may be coming back after all.  Yesterday on the Warcradle discord, user Jonny5 revealed that "There IS a full V3 Beta rules completed, waiting on Stuart to look over it. I completed it a few months ago for him." on the FSA-General Chat channel.  A couple of photos of some printed pages were also shared with the discord.

There wasn't enough text there to really get a feel for the game and how it might be different.

The ship profiles look familiar, but no real way to know how things interact.  Looks like there are four range bands for weapons, but does linking/combining fire work the same?  No idea.

Kinda wondering if I'd rather know that a draft for v3 exists, or that it's been done for a "few months" and it hasn't been released or even officially hinted at.  Nothing in the revealed info really excited me...it's been long enough that I've made my own ruleset that we're playing with.  I do want to see what WC comes up with...but it may just be that the time away from FSA has been long enough to not be immediately drawn back in.

Anyway, thought you all might be interested.

Space Naval Games / Quantum Rebellion Rules and Fleet Editor
« on: August 26, 2020, 01:44:48 pm »
Hello all!

I've finally put my rules and fleet editor up on the web for everyone to take a look at.

Quantum Rebellion is a ruleset for tabletop spaceship miniatures.  It is not tied to any particular scale.  Fleets are composed of squadrons of 1-5 ships.  Each squadron may have different classes of ships acting together...battleships escorted by frigates, carriers paired with supporting cruisers, etc.  Each ship customized with respect to equipment and weapons.  It uses a simplified 2-D movement system and d6's for combat.

I invite you to check it out and let me know what you think.  The rules and fleet editor are available at www.pymapper.com/quantum-rebellion/.

Firestorm Armada / New FAQ for the new Firestorm Edition
« on: May 05, 2020, 10:30:47 am »
This was posted on the Black Ocean Facebook page:

THE FIRESTORM FAQ

Updated May 4, 2020

Can I use my previous Firestorm Models?
Yes, you can! In the new version of Firestorm, the bases are hexagonal so you will only need to change out the bases and you are all set. If you don’t want to change your bases, then there is a hexagonal template you can use for Movement and Attack purposes instead.

Will my previous Firestorm Models have statistics in the new version?
Yes! Most if not all will have their stats to show the ship they represent in the new setting.

What do the new six-sided bases represent?
There are now six firing arcs in Firestorm Armada

Are you planning to release the 3D files for the models?
No, the miniatures in Firestorm Armada are only to be available as physical products.

Will the Sorylians change from broadside based "kinetic" scatterguns to frontal long-range kinetics?
Sorylians primarily make use of kinetic broadsides.

When do we get Beta rules?
The beta will be launched as soon as practical once Government guidance allows people to meet up again to playtest games and the Studio can return from lockdown. No information when that might be yet.

What is the scale of ships in Firestorm Armada?
Same scale as previous versions, 1:10,000

I hope Dramos is still nuked.
Dramos is very nuked. By the Terran Alliance. Never forget.

How far in the future does the new Firestorm Armada take place?
About two thousand years from now.

How many factions are there?
There are 8 factions. The Terran Directorate, Dindrenzi Federation, Sorylian   Congress, Veydreth Authority, Relthoza Unity, Ba’kash Reavers, A’Quan   Sebrutan, and the Storm Zone Coalition.

What is a Helix and an Armada?
In Firestorm Armada an Armada consists of one or more Helixes each of which contains up to six units. Each Helix has its own rules and theme.

What races make up the Storm Zone Coalition?
The Ryushi, Tarakians, Illosi, Shevaka, Xelocians, and Kedorians. Remember membership in the Coalition is flexible and often changes in response to events in the galaxy.

Extra Info Added 5/6/20:
Can I use my existing miniatures in the new Firestorm Armada?
Absolutely. Every miniature will have rules entry that you can use with it. The entry may not specifically be for that ship, but it will be a good fit for your future games. For example, a Sorylan Kestros Destroyer will count as a Sorylian Destroyer in the new game. An Aquan battleship would count as an A'quan Csera Elder etc.

Will you continue to make Warcradle Classics forever?
We have tried to produce as much of the miniatures range we inherited from Spartan Games as Warcradle Classics to help collectors complete their collections. Because of the quality of the masters and lack of suitable digital files we are not able to keep these miniatures in production long term. Effectively once the mould perishes, if we cannot make a replacement easily, that will be the end of the miniature.

What happens with the Mega-Corporations,  Storm Zone Coalition member races and other 'minor powers'?
These will be amongst the first to get brand new plastic miniatures that will be updated and improved versions of the best of those classic miniatures. Aesthetically you can expect them to sit alongside you Warcradle Classics and fit in. Once the first Helixes are released for the Factions, you can expect to see these get a great deal of attention.

Firestorm Armada / Line of Sight, or Screening Ships
« on: March 13, 2018, 09:10:48 pm »
I am working on the scenario for this years GenCon event.  Currently, I'm planning on a scenario wherein one side must escort a number of cargo ships across the board.  In taking a look at the Line-of-Sight (LOS) rules, I've been pondering whether there is a different way to deal with LOS, and if it would be too much of a hassle.

Recognizing that the rulebook states that ships are tiny in real-scale on the board, and that ships do not block LOS, what if they did?  What if the LOS for an attack was drawn from center post to the target center post, but if it passes across an intervening ship, then LOS is either blocked or impeded?  This would give Escorts and Small craft something to actually escort.  This doesn't make a lot of sense when you consider that space is 3D, but until we all get holo-tables, we're stuck playing on a 2D surface.

Maybe the level of impedance is based on ship size (Small, Medium, Large).  Or gives a +1 or +2 to the to-hit target.  Perhaps only Direct weapons are blocked, and Indirect weapons are not.

What do you think?

Firestorm Armada / Third Edition of Firestorm Armada
« on: December 13, 2017, 02:59:27 pm »
As we know, Spartan attempted to bring to life a third edition of Firestorm Armada this past year.  Just reading between the lines on how Warcradle is looking at Dystopian Wars, I would guess that Firestorm has some significant changes in its future, even if that future is a long way off.  Assuming that the next edition will not be a simple tweak from second edition, what kinds of things would you guys like to see revised?
