Title: GenghisCon 2015
Post by: Stephan on September 01, 2014, 07:43:43 pm
Greg and I were discussing options for events at Gen his and I thought I'd open it up to the forum to brainstorm.

I was thinking a relaxed, round-robin style tournament with awards for sportsmanship and painting as well as best general.  Ideally, I'd like to have a DW tourney and a FSA tourney on separate days, followed by some kind of event for experienced players only.

For the DW tourney, I was thinking we'd stick to Air and Sea.  Maybe 1000 pts each.  I'd like to use scenarios with specific objectives as well so it isn't just line up and shoot.

Thoughts?

Agreed on an event for "experienced players only".  I think that could go for both systems. And for DW, I would say yes, let's stick to air and sea.

Instead of a round robin-type tournament, I was thinking something more along the lines of simpler games to introduce people to DW or FA.  These could certainly be scenarios--harbor defense, convoy escort, etc. Maybe we could reserve awards for the "more experienced" game?

But, the con goes for a few days, so we have plenty of options.  We could do familiarization games in the morning, with something more serious in the afternoon/evening.

But whatever we end up doing, I'm all for running both game systems at GenghisCon.  I'm also toying with the idea of running a few iterations of the Firefly board game, but I'm not sure yet.

I'm up to help support anything.  And I promise to have at least one FA and one DW faction painted up.  Don't want to embarrass myself at a con like that.

You heard it here first, folks.  Mark is promising to paint up two fleets in the next 5 months. :)

All joking aside, I have some serious painting to do myself between now and then.  It helps to "sell" the game to potential new players if the models are painted up.  Ideally, I'll have my FSA and French done by then, and possibly my Chinese and the RSN for Firestorm.

I'm nearing completion of the Aquans.  Need to finish my frigates and SRS tokens, then paint the Hydra.

For the con event, I'd be open to some simple scenarios, but I wanted to do more than just demos, which is what it will turn into if we don't call it a tourney.

Also, I contacted one of the Spartan Vanguards a while back to inquire about tournament rules.  I'll ping him again to let him know we're looking at a con event in Feb.

I think a tournament would be fine, but wouldn't that require us to sit on 2-3 tables for a good portion of the day?  Do you think we'd be able to get tables for that?  I've seen that done with Battletech at other gaming cons, so I guess it could work.

I've done GenghisCon once, and TactiCon once.  It seemed that TactiCon was the less well-attended of the two.  IIRC, there were still several empty tables in the miniatures room at both cons.  So maybe camping on a couple of tables wouldn't be too difficult.

I can see us running "introductory games" in a casual tournament setting, with some scenarios.  I could draw up quick reference sheets for new players for turn sequence, movement, combat, etc, and quick-reference sheets for the models in the various fleets--stuff that would make it easy for beginners to use the models.

I'm a known quantity with the minis coordinator, so I'm sure we could get the tables.  The big challenge as always will be to schedule around the GW and Privateer events.

So you're saying "you know a guy"?  :D

Actually, not sure what they'll do at Genghis, but at TactiCon they had the 40k games/tournaments, along with Flames of War, over in an annex building--not in the hotel proper.  All the Warmachine games were cancelled, not sure where those would have been.  So I wonder if they'll do the same thing at Genghis, which is usually a bigger con anyway.  It did mean that the miniatures room was pretty quiet...almost TOO quiet at times.

We can fix that!

Stephan--I think the game on Sunday is maybe a good starting point for planning the tournament for Genghis.  The Kurak vs Zenian setup was very thematic.  Maybe we could play several smaller scenarios throughout the day that would culminate in a grand fleet engagement (a few thousand points per side) in the evening.  Wouldn't be too hard to link those smaller games together with some short narrative and objectives, plus some incentive to win (or at least to not lose).  If we could keep the Kurak vs Zenian setup throughout all the smaller engagements, that would be a nice thematic touch.

For example, winning in the smaller games would give an advantage in the grand engagement at the end.  Maybe free upgrades, or the ability to bring more capital ships (beyond what is allowed in the fleet building rules), or faster reserve deployment in the grand battle.

Could/should we do a "best painted" competition as well?

I talked to Dale about it a bit at lunch yesterday.  What we can do is going to be somewhat limited by how many players we can expect.  I think we could safely plan for 8 players with the event organizer subbing in as needed if we get less than 8.  Until we're more sure of our player base, I wouldn't want to plan for something that requires more than 8.

If we can split the players into two equal teams of Kurak and Zenian, that would be ideal.  We might have to fudge it if we have an odd number, but that's ok.  If someone brings Marauders, we can use them as the fillers.

We would then run it as an overall team event with narrative rounds.  First round would be something like we ran on Sunday.  Two tables, each with 4 players, two primary and two supporting.  As with Sunday's game, the supporting forces will come in as reserves.  The narrative is that the primary fleets were on patrol and engaged, with each calling for backup.  To shake things up, I was thinking we could randomly assign the supporting players to each primary player at the time that the first reserve roll is made.  That would ideally help folks who don't normally play together to meet and support a narrative that the supporting forces were called in from HQ based on whomever happened to be closest to the battle.

That alone would make for a fun event, and as we saw on Sunday, it took about 3 hours to actually play through round 5.  If we want to do 3 rounds, we're probably talking about an all-day event, which might be possible if we do it on Sunday starting in the morning.  I'm open to ideas for rounds 2 and 3.

For the benefit of all our CO players, I heard back from the miniatures event coordinator for GenghisCon and we should be good to go for an all-day Firestorm event on Sunday, 15 February, starting at 9am.  In the post immediately above this one you can see where we're going with this event, but I'm going to suggest that Dale, Greg, and I take the conversation offline in order to keep some surprises for you guys.  If you or a friend not on this forum think that you'll be able to attend, please keep us updated on this thread so we can adjust our number of participants.

We're also looking at a Friday afternoon/evening DW event and will let everyone know as that develops.

Now that Dale is a Spartan Vanguard, fingers crossed that we'll be able to get some official sponsorship!

I think we're going to need some space stations for the grand finale, so look though that massive mound of resin you've got.......

I've got the Relthoza Station and the box set Drydock I could assemble.
I think my old BFG Starfort is long traded away.

Those are one class of FA minis that I do not have.

But I do have an old Cylon Basestar laying around that does a fantastic job of being a space station...

Cool, how big is the Basestar?  I'm already getting ideas for a scenario with the new Terquai models.......

I imagine we could pull together a few of those starter box stations. If nothing else.

On the bigger side, 11" maybe?  Lemme see if I can dig it up this weekend.

Looks like I've got one of the space stations taken care of for the con.  Jen gave me this for Christmas!

That is cool!  I bought a bunch of junk from them for my own Christmas.  They've got some fun stuff.  This summer when we get togther for a painting gig or something, I'll schlep the light-saber Popsicle sticks!

Death Star speaker = awesome.

I found a small-ish BFG space station, and still have the Relthoza and Drydock ones.

Nothing yet received from Spartan, though it feels like no one's been in the office for 3 weeks there :-)

That speaker IS quite cool.

I bought and have assembled the TA-4 Starport Station. It's pretty big, about as long as the RSN battleship. Will try to get it painted up before the con.

For those unaware of how to register for the event, you can do it online here:

http://www.denvergamers.org/ (http://www.denvergamers.org/)

If you don't already have a sign-on, click on that button at the top and then go through the process to set up an account and then log in.  Once you're in, it should walk you through the process, first of getting a badge and then signing up for individual events.
