Title: Spartan Games Day at Gamer's Haven, CO Springs--23 April
Post by: Landlubber on March 23, 2016, 01:07:46 am
I'm moving the conversation about this over to this forum, since this is now no longer going to be a Halo Day and will instead be a Spartan Games Day at Gamer's Haven.

I got a verbal confirmation from the folks at the store that we can have four tables for the day. Just to refresh everyone's memory, we'll probably do something like this:

10am-1pm: Dystopian Wars

1pm-4pm: Firestorm Armada

4pm-7pm: Halo Fleet Battles (in primetime!)

7pm-10pm: Firestorm Planetfall

With 4 tables, we can use one for the current game, the second to set up the following game (so we aren't trying to set up and clear games off the same table every three hours), and the other two for pick up games/model and fleet display/administrative stuff.

A few of you have already volunteered to come by and help out--that's much appreciated. I can supply models and terrain for Dystopian Wars and Halo, and as I said before I can bring two space mats, one ocean mat, and one grass mat (a generic GW mat). I'll need assistance with both Firestorm games.

Quickdraw and Rob and myself discussed using this games day to launch a 4-week Dystopian Wars escalation league; apparently there is a Dystopian Wars tournament kit also coming at the end of April, so that might be something we could use. I've never run an escalation league before, so I'm open to suggestions (Quickdraw I know you have some ideas on this).

Down the road, it would be cool if we could rotate a few escalation leagues...start with Dystopian Wars, run that for 4 weeks, take a week or two off, then run a Firestorm Armada (or even Planetfall?) escalation league, then do Halo, then maybe rotate back to DW with different flavor the second time through. Goals are to get more players out and to introduce folks to other opponents. Again, I'm open to suggestions and ideas.

Will continue to post updates on this thread as we get closer. If you have ideas, please post 'em here!

I'm still down for supporting this, bringing my space mat and models. I was planning to at least "run" the Firestorm and Planetfall stuff. And I'll try to have painted DW and HALO fleets for it by then.
I've applied for these to have full Demo status from Spartan, and see what goodies we can get.  - No response yet though.

I recommend the 4-Faction Patrol Force set-up for each table like you had for DW at Genghis. Or in the case of HALO, 2 on 2.

Re: DW Escalation, count me in. Despite the doom and gloom elsewhere I've voiced concerns, I still WANT Spartan to succeed and grow. They just need to get smarter about it. :-)

I'm down for all of it.  I'll bring extra Directorate models and my Sorylians if somebody wants to try PF.  I'm hoping to play Firestorm Taskforce instead of just Firestorm (if my stuff shows up.)  If you need help running any of this let me know.

I was going to set up just for Firestorm, but I'll try to get the Taskforce stuff ready too. If you have your own, please bring it!

You guys rock, I appreciate the support. Zorper and Dale, we'll have plenty of room for Firestorm Taskforce. You can set that up while we run Firestorm Armada on the "main" table. In fact, it would be GREAT if you did, so we can show people the variety of games.

Dale, by all means if you'd like to take the reins for the Firestorm portions, go for it! Especially Planetfall--you know WAY more about that than I do.

For DW I'm thinking about setting up a 4x6' ocean space with two "engagements in progress" involving four fleets. I can supply my four fleets from Genghis Con, although it would be REALLY cool to see some others that are really nicely painted (*ahem* looking at you, Stephan, for your Prussians and you, Quickdraw, for your Ottomans and Free Aussies).

For Halo, I still think the "Firefight" scenario would be best, as it has the most potential for immediate combat. Quickdraw and I weren't able to play it last weekend due to Real Life events on my part, but I'm sure we'll be able to give it a try between now and 23 April.

I'm going to confirm with Ed today to make sure we can start advertising this on the store and Spartan forums, and I'm going to ask Kat at the store if she can make up a nice couple of signs (like she did for the Spartan Games stock area I the store) to advertise it there.

I'll start promotions too, and let me know what Kat says - I have a Promo Template I can generate. Except of curse I have to print it (usually at work) and drive into town to post it. :-)

Just a couple weeks away from Spartan Games Day at the Haven.

Quickdraw may not be able to make it, so I'm going to need some help with models for the Halo: Fleet Battles big game. Specifically, I'm going to need Covenant battlegroups. I can cover the UNSC on my own, but in case he can't make it I'll need someone to help me provide Covenant battlegroups for the big Firefight scenario.

Thanks in advance to all who have agreed to help. Hopefully we'll have a decent turn out!

Excellent, thank you! I have the Covenant forces from the starter box, plus the heavy upgrade (2x ORS and 4x SDV). My plan is for the Punic and the CAS to deploy as the flagships, while the other battlegroups come on the board around them per the Firefight scenario. We're going to need one table for the game, and one table for all the battlegroups (UNSC and Covenant) waiting to deploy. People who want to play should just be able to pick a battlegroup, roll for a deployment edge, and get into the fight.

Yes please!
And could I also borrow your space mat for the Firestorm Tourney at Conclave of Gamers on Friday?

If so, bring it on down on Sunday, and I'll get them back to you when you're down next after the 23rd.

Thanks Stephan, much appreciated. I could also just grab the mat when I leave on the 23rd and bring it back to you that night or on Sunday. Whatever is easiest. Wish you could make it down for the event, but I understand.

Is the 23rd Spartan day a Gamer's Haven still happening?  What time is it going to start?  What is the current schedule? I can head down and bring stuff if necessary.  Thanks.

Still happening, from open at 10 til close at 10!

10-1: Dystopian Wars
1-4: Firestorm Armada
4-7: HALO
7-10: Planetfall

I was going to put flyers up on Saturday, but got snowed in.

Post by: Landlubber on April 18, 2016, 05:44:08 pm
Yep, we're still a go for Saturday. I also meant to put flyers up, but I've just been too busy and haven't been in the store much due to other issues. I talked to Ed at the Haven earlier today, he said they've been passing the word to customers there at the store as well. And tonight when I get home I'll "bump" the thread in the store forum so people will hopefully notice it.

The schedule Dale outlined below is still the plan. I will be there from store opening through probably 8-9 that evening. Dale is going to help me out with Planetfall and Armada, and I have a couple people who are going to help supply ships for the Halo game (I've got the UNSC covered, I just need help with the Covenant), and I can cover the Dystopian Wars main game on my own as well--although if anyone wants to bring fleets to play pickup games or replace one of my unpainted fleets in the main demo game, that's cool too.

For Dystopian Wars and Firestorm Armada, the plan was to have 4 factions on the board in order to show prospective players some of the model range. For DW, it will be a simple "capture and hold the center" scenario--basically drive forward from your corner and try to keep your ships alive in the middle of the table (ringed by islands). Might use one of the "resource" scenarios for Firestorm Armada, where you are exploring debris fields for resources while trying to  keep your opponents from getting to the fields.

For Halo, we're going to use the new "Firefight" scenario. We'll have two large ships in the middle of the board (my Punic and Quickdraw's CAS), and other battlegroups will deploy on random board edges to contribute to the fight. I think it will be an easy scenario for anyone to just pick a battlegroup and jump in, while the two big ships slug it out in the center.

I don't have a plan for the Planetfall scenario, as I don't have forces for that game...Dale is taking the lead on that (and thanks again for the assist, Dale!).

We will have four tables for the day, so there will be room for pickup games in addition to the "main" demo game during each time block. So yeah, come on down, bring your models, and help us proselytize about Spartan Games and hopefully drum up some new players!

I have all my HALO starter ships assembled now, in case we need more. :-)

For Planetfall, I have forces for Aquans, Directorate, and of course Relthoza. Any others are welcome (please!)

For Firestorm, we'll probably do at least 4 converging fleets in teams of 2. Either 650pt starter levels, or 800pts each.
Don't know if there'll be time for any Taskforce rules tryouts, but we'll see. With enough Firestorm players, I might be able to sit out the main game, and demo Taskforce on the side.

I'll support the DW with either SA or Prussians.

I get out of my work meeting at 10 am. I am confirming a baby sitter but I wouldn't be down there till probably when dystopian wars ends. still wanna check it all out and I can bring my 4x4 maybe set up another table for dw. I wanna learn firestorm also.

I've got fully painted Sorylians for PlanetFall so I will definitely join that.  I'd like to check out HALO as well.  They told me I'm doing a system upgrade on Friday night, so DW will be kind of tough for me.  If you need more players for DW, let me know and I just wont sleep.

I also got my Firestorm Taskforce starter in the mail.  Not really interested in Armada, but wouldn't mind trying out the smaller game.

Depending on other games going, we should have space for side tables to spawn off
And I used to be known for being able to demo/play two things at once. ;-)

I'm hoping we'll have enough for the main demo and a side Taskforce game. Which means I need to get my TF models ready for minimum tabletop (based and base-coated).

And I'll repeat here - if any of you all can support the Firestorm event at Conclave of Gamers, please come on by this Friday!

Zorper, sounds like you'll be working - but if you're free at 10AM Friday there's a HALO demo too. :-)

@Hypnotini and @Zorper--come on down and play whatever/whenever you can. We're going to have four of the 4x6 tables. The only schedule I'm sticking to is for the big demo games for each system (DW from 10-1, Firestorm Armada from 1-4, Halo from 4-7, and Planetfall from 7-10). That's really so folks who haven't ever played any of those games know when we'll be running the big demos. If you want to grab one  of the tables for DW while we're running the Halo demo, that's fine! I purposefully asked the Haven for 4 tables so we could run pick-up games while the big demos are underway. The more the merrier, I say. Will be good to (hopefully) see you both there.

Also, the Halo scenario I'm going to use should make it easy to drop in/out of the game. Basically, you'll get a battlegroup and the stats for that battlegroup, and you'll be off to the races until your battlegroup has been shot up. Depending on how many players we have, we might be able to give people two battlegroups to run, or maybe you can grab a new one if your first one is destroyed. I will likely be controlling one of the two massives in the middle of the board; will need someone else to control the other (the Punic and the CAS).

@Dalek Unz--many thanks for the support. Can you bring your Halo stat cards as well, for both UNSC and Covenant? I'll bring all of mine too.

@DemonFerret--sounds great. Will be good to see the Hawker fleet on the table. For demo games, I think it's always good to get as wide an array of models on the table covering as many factions as possible so prospective players can see the variety of fleets. I'll bring my RSN as well.

Hypnotini, was great to meet you guys yesterday, always good to have more DW opponents!

Thanks much to everyone who showed up to play--special thanks to Dalek Unz, Ulric the Grey, DemonFerret, Zorper, Hypnotini, and Darth Doot for supplying ships and terrain, running games, and helping me explain rules. The day wouldn't have been nearly as smooth without your contributions.

And Ulric, that Mountain Dew hit the spot--perfect re-supply drop at the perfect moment.

Sorry. I was waiting on a few more pics from Dalek Unz.

We had a pretty good day. We made some good connections and played some good games. I have plenty of pictures to post, so I'm going to break this up by the games played, starting with Dystopian Wars.

The Dystopian Wars scenario was a basic "hold the middle" game. We played Prussians, Chinese Federation, Republique of France, and Federated States of America.

This is what happens when the Chinese battleship opens up with the heavy flamethrower at close range:

One HP, one AP, two Corrosion markers, and five Raging Fires.

After the big demo game, I coached a couple of new players through a game of Dystopian Wars using the Shadowhunter starter set. New forum member Hypnotini (one of the players) actually built this board and the island in the center. He and his opponent played the game out to the bitter end.

So, I actually don't know what scenario was played for the Firestorm Armada game, as I was coaching the Dystopian Wars game, so I'll let Dalek Unz chime in about that if he would like. I know that, at the least, we had Terran, RSN, and Hawker fleets on the table. In the meantime, here are some of the pics from that game:

There was also a game of Firestorm Taskforce:

For the Halo: Fleet Battles demo game, I used a modified version of the new Firefight scenario (you can find the full rules for the Firefight scenario in the Halo Tournament Guide on the Spartan Games website). The two flagships were my UNSC Punic-class  supercarrier and forum member Quickdraw's beautifully painted Covenant CAS-class assault carrier (many thanks to Quickdraw for supplying the ship; he couldn't make it to the games day, but he loaned me the CAS for this demo game). We deployed the two flagships per the rules, for the scenario, then I built six battlegroups apiece for the UNSC and Covenant (using some of forum member Ulric's Covenant ships), designated players to be the UNSC and Covenant fleet commanders, and we were off to the races. I had them roll for random board edge deployment for two battlegroups per turn, which is a modification from the original Firefight rules (I had to streamline the rules to make it work as a demo game). We had a lot of fun playing, and it was good to see the Punic and CAS on the board together!

The two flagships sizing each other up before the fight:

(http://i482.photobucket.com/albums/rr186/landlubber2011/Tabletop%20Wargaming/Miscellaneous/20160423_153421_zpshdkhamnv.jpg) (http://s482.photobucket.com/user/landlubber2011/media/Tabletop%20Wargaming/Miscellaneous/20160423_153421_zpshdkhamnv.jpg.html)

And the fight is on!

(http://i482.photobucket.com/albums/rr186/landlubber2011/Tabletop%20Wargaming/Miscellaneous/IMG_4387_zpsujsy7qo1.jpg) (http://s482.photobucket.com/user/landlubber2011/media/Tabletop%20Wargaming/Miscellaneous/IMG_4387_zpsujsy7qo1.jpg.html)

(http://i482.photobucket.com/albums/rr186/landlubber2011/Tabletop%20Wargaming/Miscellaneous/IMG_4385_zpsr4cmu7x4.jpg) (http://s482.photobucket.com/user/landlubber2011/media/Tabletop%20Wargaming/Miscellaneous/IMG_4385_zpsr4cmu7x4.jpg.html)

We ended up having probably 75% of the reserve battlegroups deploy on the same board edge. I was hoping for a little more variety, but it did make for some pretty interesting engagements. We opted not to use the interceptors and bombers--just too much going on--but we did use the boarding craft. Holy cow, there were a LOT of Pelicans and Type-28s flying around the board.

The UNSC player REALLY wanted these SDVs and that CCS dead...

The two massive ships survived, but surprisingly both had their front sections wrecked pretty early on--I think by the end of turn two. The Punic only got off one salvo with its forward MACs, unfortunately. And we did have one critical core breach, which wiped out three other battlegroups. Always a good time.

The Punic and CAS acted nicely as "centerpiece" models. I set them out alone in the middle of the table while I was building the other battlegroups, and they definitely got a lot of attention.

Stand by for pictures of our last game: Firestorm Planetfall!

And now for our final demo game of the day, Firestorm Planetfall.

I don't know if they were running a specific scenario; Dalek Unz ran and played in this game while I was finishing up the Halo game (which the Covenant won, but not by much). Dalek Unz's Relthoza squared off against forum member Zorper's Sorylians.

(http://i482.photobucket.com/albums/rr186/landlubber2011/Tabletop%20Wargaming/Miscellaneous/IMG_4394_zpsxlyevp1q.jpg) (http://s482.photobucket.com/user/landlubber2011/media/Tabletop%20Wargaming/Miscellaneous/IMG_4394_zpsxlyevp1q.jpg.html)

The large terrain piece(meant to be a warehouse) in the middle is actually a telecomms card rack turned on it's side, and the smaller pieces off to the side are parts of office phones (meant to be power generators in the game). Awesome use of non-traditional items for terrain pieces!

All in all, it was a good day of gaming. Again, many thanks to the various forum members who helped out. And also a big thanks to Gamer's Haven for giving us the tables to use.

Hope you enjoyed the pictures!

wait till that island is finished he he. I used the online tutorials I found to the T . I should have enough foam to build 100+ more islands its 15$ for a 2x8x2" chunk at lowes :-D rest is chopping, painting, then the parts I havnt done. flocking, sand, and trees :-D, so maybe we can get an island building day going :D

I'll let Dalek Unz chime in about that if he would like.
There was also a game of Firestorm Taskforce:

The scenario was a basic "Take the base" set-up. But it also showed once more that RSN really lacks ... something... compared to the insane resiliency of Hawker and Terrans.

Taskforce games were good to learn and teach the game. And fun because of players involved. And I like the movement system, restricted as it is, a lot more each time I use it here or in HALO.

But I have to say, the Damage Table mechanic in that is one of the WORST game design elements I've seen in a while. Doubly so for an intro game. For example, here's how dialog on a single shooting action would sound from one side of the conversation:

"So you look at your Weapons firing at the target, add them all up. But yes, different ranges make for different dice"
"And yes, since I'm obscured, you use the heavy dice mechanic, and sixes don't generate rerolls. And yes, since that one ship is behind the minefield, he adds half as many dice"
"Okay, now count the number of dice that rolled 4+, and sixes count twice"
"Compare that to my DR - you've exceeded but not doubled it. So we look at this ting chart here, and that says you get a +0 modifier. on the Damage Chart rolls. But because you have Pack Hunter, you get an automatic +1 modifier. An then because I'm a Difficult Target, you get an automatic -1. So back to zero."
"Yes, the modifier affects both our rolls. You roll on the column, I roll on the header row as Defender."
"So you rolled a 1, I rolled a 2, so that's only 1 disruption marker. If we'd both rolled higher, you would have blown up my ship."
"Why did you do the first bigger dice roll? In case you rolled higher enough to get a plus one on the chart roll."

Yeah... I think I'd rather melt down all my resin before justifying that mechanic as simple or elegant in any fashion.

The building in the center is a giant industrial complex that only non-flying, non Leviathans can enter. Nothing outside can affect what's inside. It's worth 3 TV each turn to have the most TV pts occupying it.

My regular Relthozan infantry dropped in as normal, but now that their Spires aren't assault vehicles, Tod had ample opportunity to shoot the spire dead, removing a key Drone node, and pre-activating the Infantry inside. Which is what happened to both squads - neither got a Turn 1 activation, and 1 squad just died while stuck in the open.
At first I thought this was a fatal nerf to the whole faction. But in order to shoot the spires down, it pulled Tod's massive Assault Helix battlesuits out of position. Then they couldn't get into the Objective building in time. And the initiative sinks meant that my heavy infantry drop spires went all but unopposed when they landed, and they proceeded to tear up the Sorylians lines, flyer, and Infantry. Then they retreated to dominate the objective.

There was a definite luck swing in my favor too in turn 2. But the Relthozan aren't nerfed to oblivion by any means. It will just take a full rethink of army construction.

Thanks Greg for posting all the pics!

I didn't hate it as much as you did, but I've never played Armada, so I don't have a basis for comparison.  I'm going to give the system a chance for a while.

Yep, your spiders were still plenty tough.  Good game.  I think that I stumbled on a pretty good scenario idea that with tweaks could be useful in the future.

Thanks for putting on the day and the pics Greg and all!

Haven weekends are pretty jammed up, but we'll see as summer develops. Worst case, plan for Tacticon (Sept 1-4 Hotel Elegante' on south end of the Springs)

Tacticon here?

That is correct, Tacticon 2016 will be in Colorado Springs this year over Labor Day Weekend. As far as I know, Gamer's Haven is sponsoring the miniatures games, like they did with Genghis Con.

Hey Greg, were those your RSN Ships?  If so, I think I know what your problem is...

Thanks for posting all the photos and all the commentary.
