Terran Support Cruisers
« on: February 17, 2015, 11:39:10 pm »
A couple months back I was looking at my battle for Valhalla station and realized that it could become two cool looking Terran ships if I cut it in half carefully and find some neat engines to put on the back. Now I have two halves of a space station and nothing to do with them.
So I'm playing around with the rules for Terran Support Cruisers. Basically a pair of cruisers that house a few wings each. I would like some thoughts about the rules to use for them.
My idea so far is to basically take the stat line of the heavy cruiser, nerf or change its weapon loadout, and give them three wings each.

Let me know what you think, or if that sounds ridiculous. At the very least they will hopefully make cool looking experimental "escort" cruisers for my carrier in friendly games.

Sort of a light carrier, or maybe an all-in-one System Control Ship, eh? I LOVE this idea. It sort of reminds me of the old Imperial Grand Cruisers from BFG; large-ish vessels that were capable of serving as the nucleus of a small independent force.

I'm wondering if the battlecruiser might be a better stat line to start with? Maybe not in terms of weapns, but DR 5/CR 8/Mv 8"/HP 6/CP 7/AP 4/PD 4, with 2 shields, strikes me as a better fit. Plus, you could make it 1-2 for a squadron instead of 2-3. Weapons wise, I think it would be OK to start with the heavy cruisers, but add a torpedo array perhaps? I would think a price of around 120 would probably be about right to start with, plus wings.

That's not a bad idea using the Battlecruisers stat line. Perhaps I could then use carrier style weapons and carrier style speed. I want to make sure they stay more of a Tier 2 choice and not a Tier 1. The Terrans have great Tier 1s in excess.
As far as size goes the models are larger then the cruisers (longer and thicker) but smaller then battlecruisers (not as wide)

I can understand the desire not to crowd in on the Tier 1 choices, but making a ship like this a Tier 2 choice gives me some pause; no other Tier 2 ships in the Terran fleet have Wings, so the design you are proposing would be somewhat unprecedented. Not a huge deal, I suppose...we are only talking about one or two kitbashes here after all ;).

That is very true regarding Tier 1 and Tier 2 designation. Thats why I was thinking to base it on the heavy cruiser. I'll have to think about that so that it doesn't become underpointed.
