Brilliant post.

I find Texas Toy Solider Online to be a great place to acquire minis. While the locals support my paints and specific model needs.

If anyone wants to play in the pre-dreadnought era, I highly suggest the WTJ Store (War Time Journals) for your needs. They make very affordable models in various of sizes! ((1/3000, 1/2400, 1/1800, 1/1500 Scales). The website also has multiple free rule sets for the models (to be honest I haven't played them yet) and it is a military research site.

There is also Panzerschiffe. The scale is 1/2400 and cover the period of the ACW to modern. The ships are not as detailed but are at a very   reasonable price. I have WWII ones. I have on my wish list the WWI ships.

For Ancient warfare their is Roman seas. The ships are 1/300 and you print them out on Card stock. You can make as many as you want.
I have used them for years.  You can use 6mm figures to represent troops.

Tumbling Dice - 1/2400 Ancient, Spanish Armada/Renaissance, Anglo-Dutch, Age of Sail, Victorian Age of Steam and Pre-Dreadnought. Also 1/600 Aircraft and 1/1200 flags which work fine with 1/2400

Navwar - Massive range of 1/3000 from AOS, Lissa Pre-dreadnought through Modern including aircraft. Very old ordering system (fax/email - no cart) but fast processing. Truly massive WW1 - WW2 ranges.

Viking Forge - Very decent range of Pre-dreadnought through Modern including some not done by others in 1/2400

C in C - Modest range of very good but clean castings in 1/2400 WW1 through Modern. Also very nice 1/4800 North Atlantic WW2 castings but very limited
