Kings of War: Armada (Mantic Games Fantasy Naval Combat)
« on: September 17, 2020, 03:36:02 pm »
Mantic has announced a new naval game for their Kings of War fantasy setting:

At first glance, this looks somewhat interesting, and looks like it could potentially fill the gap in the market left behind by Uncharted Seas. I'm personally interested in seeing if I can get my Dreadfleet models to work with the rules!

Interesting response already on the Uncharted Seas FB page.

But there's a lot of positivity around about this game; Lots of peoepl who weere put off by the more OTT designs of Man'O'War and UC are very intereseted, iespecially as standard historicals of the pre-Naopoleonic era can be used for factions among the Kingdoms Of Men.

I'm tempted my own self.

I just heard an interview with Matt Gilbert from Mantic, and it sounds like the plans are for the majority of the factions within Kings of War to receive fleets in Armada so I couldn't be happier!
If my wife asks, I only spent half as much as I wanted to...

Neat! Do you have a link to the interview? I'm also rather unfamiliar with the Kings of War setting, so I'm curious as to what the major factions are.

The interview was on Counter Charge episode #454 posted on 9-17-2020; I usually use iTunes, but their podcast is hosted on ohiohammer.com for direct downloading.

Early next year, their Dwarf and Empire of Dust (Egyptian / WH Tomb Kings equivalent) are planned for release, but I am most looking forward to what would come out for Trident Realms (undersea races), or Northern Alliance (exiled mercenaries / ice based).

Why would they make a game mat with all of that junk on the edges?

Yeah, it is a bit more heavily branded than a lot of other mats I've seen. I guess they don't want people to be confused about which game it came from  ;D!

It almost means that you can't tile multiples together for a larger playing surface. Just like Dreadfleet

Hard to argue with and best to copy the marketing strategy of a company whos shares are worth several hundred US Dollars each . . .

How is that a marketing strategy though?

I think he's just saying that GW made their Dreadfleet mat with an obvious border, and since GW is doing well as a business, there is nothing wrong with copying what they did. It's a strained comparison, perhaps.

The artwork around the edge of the mat doesn't really bother me too much, as I have larger generic sea mats already. Honestly, my guess is that if you are serious enough about your naval action to want to play a larger game that would require putting a couple of these mats together, you probably already have a larger sea mat to work with  ;D!

Yah but those mats look awesome

Dreadfleet only required the play area covered by their mat so GW had an excuse.

Yes, right on the nail. There's a lot of larger companies in the hobby that are taking on GW ideas simply because they are GW ideas.
