FACO / Aquan Road to Adepticon
« on: November 06, 2015, 09:52:46 am »
I figured I'd start a thread to document progress on refining my fleet for Adepticon.  Here's the latest battle report.  In the interest of keeping this info "in the family", I ask that it not be shared outside of MBS.  OPSEC is everyone's responsibility!

Had a great game tonight against Dale.  I played the second test game with my Adepticon fleet.  The first game was against Chris' Terrans.  This time I took them against Dale's Sorylians.

I call this fleet my Aquan Cruiser-Paloosa list.  The first time I played I used the Hydra Battleship as my Tier 1.  This time I used the Vortex battle station with +1 SH and +4" command distance.  The rest of the fleet was composed of the following with no Hardpoints or Upgrades on any:

4x Chironex Cruisers
4x Sulan Cruisers
3x Makalu Cruisers
3x Piranha Frigates
3x Piranha Frigates

The fleet performed really well in both games, even in the first game where Chris' dice-witchery counteracted my own.  Dale's heavy cruiser squadron took a toll on my Makalu, but combined fire from the Makalu, Vortex, and Sulan eventually took them down.  We almost had a double-death when the Vortex killed the last of his HCs and it blew up right next to my last Makalu.  If it weren't for the Makalu's standard Reinforced Hull on the P/S and a single shield save, the explosion would have double-critted the Makalu.

FACO / Battle Report - Terrans vs Aquans and Their Dirty Allies
« on: October 22, 2015, 10:31:46 am »
Played against Chris last night in my first official trial of a fleet list for Adepticon.  I took:

Hydra = 170 pts
4x Chironex
 - Difficult Target = 240 pts
3x Makalu = 180 pts
4x Sulan = 240 pts
4x Frigates = 80 pts
6x Corvettes = 90 pts

As you can see, it's heavy on cruisers and has no SRS.

I don't have Chris' complete list, but I know he had:
1 Apollo Battleship
1x Palisade Battle Station
3x Artemis Destroyers
3x Defense Platforms
4x Pilgrim Frigates
4x Pilgrim Frigates
4x Missionary Frigates

We played the Hold the Waypoints scenario.

Chris created a bunker behind his waypoint with the Palisade, Destroyers, and Defense Platforms towards his left and deployed the rest of his fleet to his right, facing off against my Chironex, Sulan, and Frigate squadrons.  My waypoint was about center of my deployment zone and I set up my Battleship and the Makalu directly behind it, with the Makalu broadside facing Chris.  My corvettes were placed to zip up on Chris' left to take advantage of a planetoid's grav assist on that side of the table (a move I'd later regret).  The only thing held in reserve were Chris' Missionary Frigates, which didn't get to shunt in until Turn 4.

I'll spare you the play by play.  In short, the Apollo died by the end of Turn 2 thanks to combined Grav, Beam, and Torp salvoes from all three cruiser squadrons.  A lucky crit at the start of Turn 1 which took down the Apollo's PD helped a lot.  From there it was a slog of killing Terran Frigates as the Aquans moved in on the Palisade and Destroyers.  If this had been an actual tourney, the smart move would have been to pull back and camp on my waypoint since I was out of the Effective range of the surviving Terran forces, but I was in a killin' mood.  That gave the Terrans the opportunity to kill a Makalu and reduce both the Sulan and Chironex squadrons to 50%.  Running the corvettes up also exposed them to the fighter wings from the defense platforms, which proceeded to kill a Corvette a turn until they were reduced to below 50%.

Definitely some bad luck for Chris losing the Apollo so quickly.  His usual dice witchery also failed him while mine was in full effect.  A great game overall and Chris made some good suggestions for improving the list.

I believe Chris' impression of the list can be summed up with the following.

I just checked and Geek Nation Tours has their Adepticon 2016 tour up.  I submitted a booking request and asked if they offer any group rates in case we've got enough folks in Colorado interested in going.  I'll let you know what I find out.

I just saw that someone started a Firestorm Armada FB page for Colorado. From what I can see it looks like it was started by Nathan Burg.  I've asked to join the group and will see if I can roll those guys in with us.

Well, here's all the armor and sky drop models.  Next in the painting tray is the Infantry, which I need to clear out to make room for a Leviathan (or two).

Dystopian Wars / Frenchies, Frenchies Everywere......
« on: March 27, 2015, 10:03:31 am »
After last night's game I was inspired to crack open my non-Prussian spartan bag and reacquaint myself with my CoA and French fleets.  Wow, I've got a lot of stuff crammed into that little bag.  I now need to finish painting my few CoA things that aren't finished yet and then start on my French, who are almost entirely unpainted.

What are everyone's thoughts on the French?  As I recall, I put them aside out of frustration as much as anything else.  I love the skimmer theme, but I remember being underwhelmed by the Magenta Mk 1 and the Marseille.  Looking at the V2.0 stats for these ships however, I think they've got some real potential now that the main turrets and broadsides are both (S).

What are your thoughts?  Anyone have much experience with or against the French at this point?

A few folks asked me to post pics from the Battle of Corianna VI that we did at a convention several years ago using the A Call to Arms rules set.  Some spoilers if you haven't watched through Season 4 of B5.
