The First World War: Volume 1: To Arms by Hew Strachan is undoubtedly the best book I have read on the subject.  Unfortunately after fifteen years there is still no sign of volumes two and three.

I would agree that on the naval side Robert K. Massie's Dreadnought and Castles of Steel are simply the best.

I just finished "The Coast Guard in World War I" by Alex Larzelere. It focuses the six Revenue Cutter Service cutters transferred to the US Navy during the War as Derelict Destroyers and the Revenue Cutter Service aviators at Naval
Air Station, Ile Tudy, France flying anti-submarine patrol in HS-1 aircraft.
