Roll Call / Hello again!
« on: July 22, 2021, 05:13:37 pm »
Been off forums for several years, so sorry about that. Ran into some issues, had to move, get settled and then dive back into the hobby. Well I am back and hope all my friends in Colorado are doing well. Started listening to the Podcast, and Got the Victory At Sea starter set and most of the Kriegsmarine fleet On special deal on amazon (no local Game store in my town, nearest one is 60 minutes down a toll road....yea! ). I find myself listening to Sabaton's Midway and Bismarck songs as I started Painting the Admiral Graf Spee this afternoon after work. Sadly though I am still looking around for any gaming group near my current location. Stuck between Topeka and Witchita Kansas. Also with Covid all last year that was put on hold... fun times had by all. I do however have table Top Simulator so that is an option I guess. Anyway will be around a bit more.

Space Naval Games / Floating an idea here...
« on: November 15, 2018, 01:33:50 am »
Wondering if anyone has a wish or want to learn to play B5 A Call to Arms. While my Co- Worker and myself have been floating an idea of another campaign, We have no idea of when we would be able to start it. With Thanksgiving coming up and the rest of the holidays, we are holding off till january to kick start it. He wanted to know if I could get some other people interested in the game, either in person or using Vassel if distance is an issue. Let me know if your interested or just want to get a friendly game in. Also if you want the Rule book let me know I have 3 of the main books, got the third thanks to a fellow on this forum.

Space Naval Games / B5 Camgaign with Co- worker using Vassal.
« on: October 17, 2018, 11:26:37 pm »
So a friend of mine at work decided to do a campaign after work and early in the morning. So we went through the lists and I went with ISA and my opponent went with Brakiri Syndicracy. I liked the ISA Ships and have always loved the White star fleet idea. While my Opponent was attracted to the Fluff of the Brakiri, Money tons of Money. Also maybe the walmart corporate life got to him I dont know. Anyway, I will post a small story from both points of view and set up the narrative for why these two forces are fighting. Small Disclaimer, it is fan fic in that none of it is cannon. Also I am using naval titles so people are not confused about who is who in each fleet. Also the ISA will have Human Rangers who retain more culture from their human side than the Mimbari side. This is to make each character memorable in some way and not a carbon cut out of other ranger officers. (Did you know that Brian Cranstan played as Ericcson in B5, the ranger who willingly died to trick the shadows.)

December 21, 2271

Vice Admiral Vidarson sat in the command chair as he reviewed the reports printed out for him. He enjoyed the old ways of paper to reading a computer screen all day. He stroked his braided beard in deep thought, sighing he placed the reports in his lap as he looked at the bridge view screen. "In deep thought, Sven?" A male voice rang out. The Speaker stepped into the light, wearing the robes of a ranger and the spiky head bone plate marking him as one of the Mimbari.

Sven Chuckled slightly as he turned to look at the captain of the Zuikaku, a White Star Carrier named after an old earth warship from prespace days. Sven's fleet was interesting in that he gained all the odd ball Rangers and ships. The naming conventions made it clear that his group of rangers thought outside of the norm, though all of them would die for each other and for the ISA. Sven was of Scandinavian descent. Sven smiled slightly. "Yes" was the simple answer he gave.

"I was wondering, why our allies would hide this from us. For wealth? For knowledge?" He tapped the arm rest with his right hand, his robes the same as the Captains, only the pendant over his right chest slightly different. "Though with the Drakiri, the answer is relatively simple." He stood from the chair as he crossed his arms.

"Wealth and knowledge." Replied Mikal. Mikal's arms where held behind his back as he stood next to Sven. "The Drakiri learned of the shadow tech and have since started to try to reclaim it. This is foolish as it will only draw the attention of the Drakh. Peladias 4, a leisure world in an otherwise unremarkable system, will be caught in the cross fire."

Sven nodded his head. "The Drakiri have sent a Fleet under Admiral Ve'kir to secure the system. He is a well known and respected admiral from the shadow war." He turned and command deck crew and smiled. "Still their tech is outdated and their crews not as well trained as ours." He patted Mikal on the shoulder, Despite the strange look Mikal gave him at such a jesture. " Tell Captain Yukio to get the Takao, Shimekaze, Huuya, and the Prinz Eugen ready for Battle. I want to send in her group with the Black Sun Squadron to take the Research station around Peladias 8. I want to keep this fight away from Peladias 4 if possible."

Mikal nodded and moved to give the orders.

~~~~~~
Admiral Ve'kir listened to the Over manager for Research and Development drone on about how the loss of this resource would adversely effect the stock prices of the region. After another 20 minutes of corporate talk that went around in circles, the call ended. He rotated the chair to face the screen window of his office. He poured himself some tanna tea and sipped on it. The Pashev, a Cormumai class warship, had the small luxaries in life that made this type of duty worth it.
A buzz at his door announced his Aide Ma'yin. She came in and handed him his reports on the data pad. He enjoyed her view as was his want, he had three wives back home. Perhaps after this he would add a fourth, the bonus if he did well would make it easy to placate his other wives with gifts. He sipped his tea as he waved her away and typed out the orders for his group. He would take and secure the Leisure planet first, hopefully to draw the enemy away from the real location of the Shadow cache, which was well hidden deep in the outer reaches of the system. Even the Human research center at Peladias 8 was tempting. However he did not go for it as it did not assist his long term plans. He knew that the ISA would stay away from a heavily populated world and thus it would make the ideal location to launch out of as well as repair and replace personal at a lower cost.
He stood up and lifted his tea cup to the imaginary ISA admiral and wished him ill luck.
MBS 2016 BFG Campaign / The Long War.....
« on: April 19, 2016, 08:24:39 pm »
The long war had marched on in his memory for thousands of years, he remembered how Prospero burned, he remembered Ahrimans ritual that cursed his brothers, he remembered the Gothic war serving as one of Abbadon's many advisers.....
Masaharta rolled her eyes as her master's acheivements went on. Sure she would never roll her eyes at such a well known Chaos Sorcerer in person, but in her bridge, on a ship that she had taken from the reserve fleets of the corrupt naval lords of this system she was free to do what she wished in some aspects. Masaharta was a Chaos Sorceress of the highest degree, for a mortal. She was in the process of correcting that, she aimed to become a demon Prince, and her first target to prove herself was to raid the system of Vestibius. The Imperials had abandoned it when Her master caused warpstorms to shatter the ablity to travel though here decades ago. It was only a matter of time before the Imperials recon raided the system itself or came in force.
She looked over the command console from the Lord's throne as her Thousand Son Marines invaded the world below. Normally one would not beable to command thousand sons, but Tzeentch in his wisdom had given her a cadre of Thousand Sons to do just that, Much to Weshptah's disdain. Sudden a CAll was sounded out by her men. "Two unknown Ships off the Starboard side!" After a pause the Bosun at the sensors called out again. "Its the Vigours and the Ranger My Lord!" The bouson looked at her. "Both Daughtless class Cruisers, torpedoes front. They closing bearing 125 by 234 by 78!"
"Good! Our First Catch of the DAy! Praise Tzeentch!" She yelled out over the ship board net." All crew to action Stations! " She hit the Klaxon switch several times as it rang out loudly. " Comms Get the Renegades of Prospero. Notify them to keep moving forward if they launch torpedoes in the next 5 minutes, if not turn towards the enemy and engage the Vigours. She will be the first target of our wraith at the false emperor!"
After a few moments all sections reported in, her fighters and bombers launched successfully and she started the Hecate's slow turn towards the enemy, slow was relative as she was faster then most Imperial ships. the PAradise lost fired her starboard weapons, the Battery fire missed completely, but the weapon fire massed from her escorts crippled the dauntless, then came in the lance shots from the paradise lost, her weapons aim turn. The lances burned deep into the hull causing th ship to loose power and drift forward blazing under the whithering fire she sustained. The ranger turned towards them and fired a salvo of torpedoes that found two of her escorts, sending the souls onboard to the warp.
Masaharta smiled as she began to order the ships to fire again on the ranger, only to watch it sustain damage, but non lethal to the hardy little ship. Then it quickly pulled itself back into the warp, disappearing quickly after only a few rounds of firing. She growled and slamed her fist into the command throne arm. " Damn them for running like dogs!"
She sat back in her chair. "Info the renegades to return to orbit. We will recieve the raiders shortly and go to warp. Our master has plans for us..." With that She stood up, a stunning beauty of long dark hair and hazel eyes, her skin an albaster white. She wore Carpace armor taken from a long dead naval Commissar, at her hip was his bolt pistol. The power sword once used by the previous captain was consicrated to a less demon and its soul reforged on the blade making the power blade much more deadly then it was prior. Many thought she might do better with Slanneshes patronage, but she loved manipulating the minds around her with schemes not sex. She walked out to her command room, where the rituals to Tzeentch were conducted to contact Weshptah.
News and Rumors / BFG Armada Goes Open Beta on Thursday
« on: March 07, 2016, 08:34:32 pm »
For those of you following the BFG pc game, it goes live open beta on thursday afternoon.
Here is an Angryjoe review back at the middle of last month, its really just a sit and watch as the Dev plays it, but here it goes. Also the devs are French, so the accent can be a bit thick at times. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zw5V2O7jQJU
Space Naval Games / Vassal... BFG B5CtA
« on: March 02, 2016, 03:16:36 pm »
So I have a quick question for those of you who have played BFG at some point. Who would be up for a ManBattlestations campaign with BFG or Bab5 A call to arms ( so long as dale does not play the centruitai or however you spell them)?
This friday night I plan on getting a game together with Ruck of BFG, if it goes smoothly and we have no real problems with how it works I plan on asking Ruck if he wants to make it a twice month campaign game, with others welcome to join in as time allows. At least I dont have to paint and pay 3 times the models value for campaign.
Firestorm Armada / Thoughts on Fleet Design.....
« on: February 19, 2016, 11:25:19 am »
WARNING! Trigger WARNING FOR THOSE WITH SENSITIVE FEELINGS OR ARE FANBOYS(Ie Spartan can do no wrong)!
Seriously if you have a counter to what I have said here, please do post it. These are just some feelings/beliefs I have after a few dozen games of FSA in my current meta.
Lets look at Racial Abilities* of Dindrenzi and RSN compared to that of say Terrans and Aquans....
Dindrenzi - Rail Guns, Gun Racks, and Ablative Armor
RSN- Cloak(on one ship type), Shields(on capitals only and at cruiser levels), Beams( free beams for all), and Railgun or torps
Terrans- Any Arc Torps, Nukes, Shields
Aquans- Any arc Torps ( or having them in multiple arcs cant remember),Evasive(most of their ships have this not all granted) and Energy Transfer of at least one on all cruiser + size ships.
As an RSN and Dindrenzi player, I have some issues with the terran and Aquan fleet. Firstly, they get all the toys of shields, good torps, and the mars that make those torps dangerous. Now I typically have a higher DR and CR, but with no Shields, I have quickly seen that as a liability rather then as a bonus.
Last game I played, I watched as my opponent consistantly rolled high enough on his damage rolls to mitigate all my DR and CR bonuses. I have seen my Cloaked ships in the RSN get blown apart by Torps, so much for cloak helping right? That makes me more vulnerable to torps the next activation that my opponent does.
Now some people say RSN and Dindrenzi win the range game, this is not the case if your opponent is using terrain to his or her advantage. My Direct weapons fire is reduced, while your torps are not. Sure I can bring in Escort frigates, but once again I have seen them just get demolished after all the Dindrenzi escorts are not so much escorts as they are mini frigates. The Buckler class escort has one PD....Only one How the hell is it an escort frigate? So you have to use the RSN ones who have 3 PD each.`
Now RSN Spook type Cruisers are useless against the terrans, despite this fleet being designed to kill terrans, due to the fact that you can't out torp a terran fleet and that ship type is built with spook torps. Hell The marshells out torp them with their spook(which was originally only Zenian League mar for torps) nuke torps, come on! Also with dual defenses of Shields and Point defense fire, as a RSN and Dindrenzi player you need those Direct weapons. I have seen whole weapons fire die the entire round due to Shields and Shield TAC cards. While the return fire knocks down whole ships.
I write this to point out that at least one ship type, maybe like a Battle cruiser or similair ship type, needs something to by pass that ship Shield and torp advantage. When playing against Terrans And especially Aquans, I have noticed that not being able to land solid hits due to Shield advantages(seeing regularly the 2-3 shields activating on 3+, sometimes up to 5 ships depending on what your shooting at) and on the aquan side( which is just their racial fleet ability and I am cool with it for the most part. Except that they have two racial abilities, energy transfer and evasive) I can get mushroom stamped on the forehead by them in the return fire. The issue here is that only gravity type weapons can by pass the shields, and only one race has them...who are they allied with...thats right aquans and terrans..... The way this game is set up amazes me at times.
A Good deal of the problem comes from, as a player pointed out, that torps do not reduce in strength due to damage, also for terrans and others it is an any arc weapon. While for RSN, Dindrenzi, and others its a purely front arc weapon that shares its arc with our direct fire weapons.   This means by turn 3 or 4 Dindrenzi and RSN have to angle to get the shots in, while a terran player can just fire away with his torps in any arc and hit. Your main weapon is still effective, while 2/3rds of mine is gone.
Also Gun Racks suck... why? You can't have them fire on two seperate arcs of fire, you pick one, port or starboard sides. Also most dindrenzi ships have no other weapons that can join fire as the gun racks act as one weapon system in two arcs, but can only fire in one each round. This would be fine if their damage values where high enough, but they are not. So unlike the aquans I can't boost fire to make it more dangerous.
Before you fan boys of the terrans get upset, yes I know my Rail guns are stupid, but as pointed out, its front arc only direct fire. Chris Routinely hides his cruisers on full stop behind some Astroids, just so they can fire all game with little worry. Also RSN has some pretty nasty Beam weapons I will give you that. But I have to close within Knife fighting range and without shields and having to drop cloak, my fragile ships crumble up real quick.
Also Ablative armor is more of a weakness, if it was just a DR of 4 and a CR of 8, all the time, I would agree that my ships are tough to avoid Crits most of the time, but once my Hull points go to half strength, my CR goes to 6, which leaves me with the same stats as a Terran cruiser who most likely has two shields. So the point of fluff saying my Dindrenzi ships being tough is just wrong, as I have the same DR as a terran cruiser but no shields.... and my Higher CR only lasts for half my hull points before going away... and oh your shields last until the last HP is gone. Also I can not improve my DR, while at 5 points a Cruiser can increase his shields to 2.... Balanced?
Now I am not writing this to claim that game is unwinable for the Zenian league. Nope, I am writing this to point out some unbalanced things that I see within the game. Now any one point can be mitigated by Rolling hot the game and an opponent just rolling cold. But for a Dindrenzi player and RSN player I have realized that I need to roll well and hope that my opponent rolls crap, because when it comes downs to it, sound strategy played by both players is seen often enough in my games. So it all comes down to how you roll, as you know that your opponent makes very few mistakes.
Space Naval Games / A Call to arms
« on: January 26, 2015, 12:14:08 pm »
So I found my old 2nd edition book, but I cant find my ISA. Sad day, though I have found those cut outs they used to sell for most of the ships. Issue is that its an older one from before 2nd edition fleet guide. So what size is the white star carrier, what 'base' matches it in size for the purposes of a game?
Also if anyone is interested I also found vassals A Call to war Module yesterday.
Find a Game! / Game on 24th. Colorado Springs or Parker
« on: January 22, 2015, 10:15:43 am »
Looking for a Game of Firestorm Armada on the 24th. Either location is fine, though I have never been at the parker location, got the info from dale. Am going to be playing an RSN fleet at 800, can do up to 1200 but it will be supported by Works Raptor.
Really looking for someone to play to teach the game system to me. Did play back in V1.0 days, but that was several years ago.
